Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Instituto Cervantes de Manila has tapped different educational institutions in Metro Manila as partners for the 23rd Pelicula > Pelikula Manila Spanish Film Festival, which runs until October 13.

The festival, which features more than 20 Spanish and Latin American films, is being held this year in collaboration with the Asia Pacific Film Institute (APFI), Ateneo de Manila University-Modern Languages, CIIT College of Arts and Technology, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB), Far Eastern University (FEU) Institute of Arts and Sciences, iAcademy, Mapúa University School of Media Studies (SMS), Meridian International (MINT) College, University of the Philippines Film Institute (UPFI), and the UP Department of European Languages.

Mapúa Digital Film Program Chair, SMS professor, and filmmaker Sheryl Andes moderated the talkback session with “Benito Pérez Buñuel” director Luis Roca and producer Marta de Santa Ana after the Asian premiere of their documentary last October 8.

The film explores the life and influence of Spanish filmmaker Luis Buñuel and Spanish writer Benito Pérez Galdós. The audience had the opportunity to learn about the creative process behind the documentary, as the filmmakers shared their insights on Galdós' and Buñuel's legacy and their passion to bring it to life.

Meanwhile, Spanish filmmaker Mario Torrecillas conducted a two-day postproduction workshop at iAcademy Nexus Makati last October 8 and 9. Torrecillas provided 12 students from APFI, CIIT, DLS-CSB, iAcademy, Mapúa, and MINT with hands-on experience on the postproduction process and practical knowledge of stop-motion animation.

Torrecillas earlier discussed his work as a comic book writer and his experience of adapting comics to cinema in his talk “From Comics to Film” and presented the film “Loli Tormenta,” of which he wrote the script, last October 7 at Cinema 2, Shangri-La Plaza Red Carpet Cinemas. He also facilitated a free animation workshop for children last October 6 at the Grand Atrium of the mall.

Pelicula > Pelikula is also made possible through the Embassy of Spain in the Philippines, AECID, the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB), Teatro Real, the Embassy of Argentina in the Philippines, the Embassy of Brazil in the Philippines, the Embassy of Colombia in the Philippines, CMB Film Services Inc., Kinoise PH, and SINEGANG PH, and sponsored by Philippine Transmarine Carriers, Inc., Arthaland, Ayala Corporation, BOYSEN, Fundador, Terminal Six, and Barcino.

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

The 3-day Manila Fame 2024 dubbed as Reimagining and organized by CITEM is to be held on October 17 to 19 at the World Trade Center Manila in Pasay city.

The much-anticipated Manila FAME is returning for its 72nd edition, set to take place at the World Trade Center Manila in Pasay City from October 17 to 19, 2024. Organized by the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), this year’s event is dubbed "Reimagining" and promises an exceptional showcase of Philippine artisanal products that blend traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design and sustainable innovation.

A Visual Storytelling Showcase

This three-day event will not only spotlight bespoke design but also offer an appreciation for circular production. With a clear commitment to sustainability, the curated displays are set to captivate attendees by showcasing a rich tapestry of the Filipino creative landscape. More than just an exhibition, Manila FAME aims to offer fresh perspectives for both returning visitors and first-time attendees.

Design Commune: Collaboration and Innovation

One of the standout features of Manila FAME 2024 is the Design Commune, a platform that brings together local designers and manufacturers. The exhibition will highlight the newest collections, which draw inspiration from modern trends while staying grounded in Filipino culture and heritage. This year's "Beyond Reality" theme will push the boundaries of design by reimagining common objects and sustainable materials into functional lifestyle products. This initiative will feature over 150 prototypes from 25 companies, including a collaboration with designer Maco Custodio, who will bring to life prototypes that merge the avant-garde with practicality.

Design Retrospective: A Tribute to Legacy

Manila FAME 2024 also features a Design Retrospective that will pay homage to the iconic trends of the 1980s and 1990s. The Nostalgia showcase will spotlight products and designs that have helped shape the trajectory of the Filipino design industry. Featuring 22 pioneering companies, this exhibit will celebrate the global impact of Filipino craftsmanship, showcasing products like the peacock chair, woven furniture, shell clutches, and other design milestones.

Philippine Components: Introducing New Materials

In a special segment focused on the country's growing materials industry, Philippine Components will make its debut, shining a light on wall coverings made from paper, woven textiles, stone, and shell, as well as architectural panels and other home furnishings such as door handles and stair banisters. These components represent the utilitarian side of design, blending aesthetics with practical solutions for the home.

Celebrating Local and Global Design

With over 500 exhibitors representing the best of home, fashion, and lifestyle industries, Manila FAME 2024 is expected to attract more than 4,000 local and international buyers. Following its post-pandemic resurgence in 2023, which generated sales exceeding $6.8 million, this year’s edition is poised to be an even bigger success, providing a global platform for the creative talents of Filipino artisans and designers.

Manila FAME has long been recognized as a premier sourcing event for global trade buyers in search of high-quality, handmade products from the Philippines. This year’s highly curated edition promises not only stunning visual experiences but also exciting new designs, making it an essential event for anyone with a passion for craftsmanship, sustainability, and innovation.

If you are a design enthusiast, a trade buyer, or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of Philippine artistry, Manila FAME 2024 is a must-visit event. Join the movement to support sustainable design and celebrate the enduring power of Filipino creativity.
