Are Social Media Influencers Killing Mainstream Media?

Attention, mainstream media! The tides are shifting, and it's time to face the facts—social media influencers are rapidly gaining ground, overtaking traditional platforms in both reach and engagement. While you've held the throne for decades, influencers are now connecting with audiences in ways that feel more personal, authentic, and instant. The younger generation is bypassing TV screens and newspaper pages for Instagram stories, TikTok trends, and YouTube vlogs. It's no longer enough to broadcast; audiences want interaction.

The question is: Will you evolve to keep up, or risk being left behind in the digital age? Step up, innovate, and join the conversation before it’s too late!


Actually, we are already seeing many of them evolving and tapping social media as well. They are definitely emulating what influences are doing right now since they've realized they have no choice but to embrace the inevitable.

Social media influencers have drastically reshaped the media landscape, often challenging the dominance of traditional or mainstream media. Their rise is due in large part to several factors that give them a distinct edge:


Direct Engagement: 

Influencers thrive on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, where they can interact directly with their audience. Mainstream media, by contrast, often feels more distant, broadcasting information rather than engaging in two-way communication.


Authenticity and Relatability: 

Audiences are increasingly drawn to influencers because they seem more relatable and authentic than polished, corporate-backed media personalities. Influencers often share unfiltered insights into their lives, making them feel more trustworthy to followers.


Niche Appeal: 

Influencers can cater to highly specific audiences. Mainstream media, on the other hand, tends to appeal to broader demographics. Influencers can speak directly to niche interests—whether it's vegan cooking, fitness, or tech—cultivating a dedicated, loyal following that is hard for mainstream media to replicate.


Cost Efficiency: 

Brands are shifting advertising dollars, or pesos, away from traditional media to influencer marketing because it is often more cost-effective. Influencers can promote products with a perceived personal touch that delivers a higher return on investment than expensive TV or print campaigns.


Content on Demand: 

Influencers provide content instantly and can adapt quickly to trends. Unlike mainstream media, which operates on more rigid schedules, influencers can produce content tailored to their audience’s immediate interests, capitalizing on trending topics or viral moments.


Decline of Traditional Formats: 

The younger generation consumes most of its content digitally, bypassing newspapers, television, and radio altogether. As the influence of traditional formats wanes, social media influencers, with their massive reach, have filled the void.

This shift has made mainstream media outlets struggle to keep up, with declining viewership and advertising revenue. If this trend continues, it's possible that traditional media could either evolve to compete with influencers or risk becoming obsolete. 

However, it's worth noting that mainstream media still holds credibility, particularly for hard news, while influencers excel in lifestyle and entertainment spaces. The future may see more collaboration or convergence between the two rather than one putting the other completely out of business.

This month, 7-Eleven goers can jump on another awesome adventure as a legendary partnership is making noise in regions far and wide: that between the convenience store giant and one of the most beloved media franchises in the world, Pokémon.

The partnership was launched last September 13, 2024 with a ribbon-cutting held at 7-Eleven Centris 1 in Quezon City. Both brands kicked things off by dressing up 7-Eleven Centris 1 in Quezon City in full Pokémon decor, with 7-Eleven Arnaiz Avenue in Makati and 7-Eleven St. Theresa Casa Rosario in Cebu to follow in the next few months. To add to the fun, 7-Eleven Centris 1 has also been turned into a PokéStop in Pokémon Go along with the rest of the Philippine 7-Eleven stores. Customers can now venture to the branch nearest to them for the full Pokémon experience by channeling their inner trainer and catching their coveted Pokémon through the Pokémon GO app. 

Gamers can then take a break from playing and enjoy their go-to 7-Eleven products wrapped in Pokémon-themed packaging. There’s Pikachu, Squirtle, Charmander, and Bulbasaur for Crunch Time; Pikachu and Snorlax for 7-Fresh Siopao; Meowth for Big Bite; Jigglypuff for Fundae; Gyarados for GULP; Eevee, Flareon, and Jolteon for the small, medium, and large cups of City Cafe respectively; and Umbreon for Prima. The themed packaging is currently available in 7-Eleven Luzon stores, but will be implemented across the country from October.

Fans of the trading card game have it extra special as Pokémon Trading Card Game Booster Packs are up for grabs in 1,500 7-Eleven stores nationwide. There’s a surprise for every fan too. For every purchase of one Booster Pack, which starts at P259, buyers will receive one limited edition Pokémon 7-Eleven Promo Card.
