Public interest law group ImagineLaw on Monday invited Filipino journalists to produce stories and reports through a media fellowship that will shed light on the advertising and marketing of unhealthy food to children.

“Unhealthy food marketing harms children,” said ImagineLaw Executive Director Atty. Sophia San Luis. “It increases their risk of being overweight or obese and leads to other diet-related diseases,” she added, citing a study by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

The said media fellowship, dubbed as ‘Bawas Patalastas’, seeks to deepen the public’s understanding about the issue and initiate conversations through stories, features, or reports. The fellowship will accept seven (7) Filipino journalists, called ‘Fellows’, who will receive a grant of up to PHP 60,000 for research, editing, and publication of their desired stories.

The fellowship is open to all journalists, whether employed by a media outlet or freelancer, who work in television, print, radio, and online.

“Media plays an important role in creating an environment that encourages children to make healthy choices,” San Luis said. “The stories and reports produced by the Fellows will help us craft a policy proposal that will regulate unhealthy food marketing targeting children,”

Interested journalists can apply through https://bit.ly/ILMediaFellowship until October 5, 2023. On top of the cash grant, the Fellows will also receive briefings and review sessions from experts and fellow journalists on the topic.

The Fellowship proper is from November to December of this year and is being conducted in partnership with Gugma PR, a public relations group helping advocates, movements, and changemakers build impact through empathic communications.

VP Sara urges education ministers to reshape education, embrace technology in GEIS 2023

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Vice President and Secretary of Education Sara Z. Duterte calls for reshaping of education and embracing of new technologies to improve current education landscapes across the globe in her keynote speech during the 2023 Global Education and Innovation Summit (GEIS) on Thursday.

“We now live in an era where undeniably, technology must be harnessed to improve access, quality and equality in education. And the advent of artificial intelligence will certainly create another paradigm shift in education. While this possibility will present newer and greater opportunities, it will also present many uncertainties in our vision of digital education,” Vice President and Secretary Duterte said.

VP-Sec Sara, who is also the current Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Council President, acknowledged the impending shift of technology once again as Artificial Intelligence (AI) takes surface. She then proposed three (3) points to ensure that technology remains to be an effective weapon to aid education.

Duterte first highlighted that critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity should be considered before using technology.

She then emphasized the need to be responsive to the effects of technology on educational systems wherein ministers should closely monitor these technologies and provide adequate steps for its continuing improvement.

Lastly, she stressed that adaptability and sustainability of new technology in education systems must be studied by the end users before implementation to ensure that these technologies can be of utmost benefit to their stakeholders.

“I believe this is the reason why we are all gathered here today. Let us take this opportunity to reshape education in our respective countries in order to provide our learners the all-important opportunity of reaching their full potential,” she added.

The GEIS is spearheaded by the Korean Ministry of Education in efforts to convene education ministers across the globe to discuss and collaborate on the innovations, best practices, and adaptability of the countries in terms of education.
