KL-ites go wild over MR D.I.Y.’s giant inflatable iron

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records

Malaysia’s favourite do-it-yourself store MR D.I.Y. had KL-ites in a frenzy today, when it unveiled a giant inflatable iron over the city skyline.

The launch of the inflatable iron marked the kick off of the retailer’s newest initiative, dubbed “Big & Small, MR D.I.Y Has It All” / “Kecil & Besar, MR D.I.Y. Ada”.

Measuring 16 x 7.5 x 8 metres, the inflatable iron hovers over the picturesque Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, and will remain in place until 15 October 2023. The park provides a safe space for the crowds converging to view the iron. The one-of-a-kind installation was recently recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records as the ‘largest inflatable iron in Malaysia’.

This specially curated “Kecil & Besar MR D.I.Y. Ada” initiative showcases the over 20,000 products that MR D.I.Y offers at its more than 1,200 stores nationwide.

Launching the initiative, MR D.I.Y. Group’s Head of Marketing, Alex Goh said, “Big or small, MR D.I.Y really has them all. We carry the smallest of items, for example, batteries, padlocks, and key chains to large items like vacuum cleaners, inflatable pools, and foldable stairs. We have low prices, starting from less than RM1.00. We have a smaller store format to cater to the needs of our customers in smaller towns like Permatang Pauh, Pulau Pinang, and Sik, Kedah, right up to our superstore format MR. D.I.Y. PLUS in major cities like Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Johor Bahru, which covers an area of over 20,000 sq feet. And we serve the needs of babies through to retirees. It’s a big promise to make, and one that we are very proud to be able to deliver.”

“We are proud that our special installation is recognised in Malaysia Book of Records. The giant inflatable iron is a fun and engaging way of sending out this message of “Kecil & Besar MR D.I.Y. Ada” to all Malaysians, and a perfect way to give them something entertaining to enjoy as we celebrate the holidays around Merdeka and Malaysia Day. Do head out to Taman Titiwangsa to enjoy the sight -- it is really something to behold!” added Goh. He said that the installation effort was made possible with the collaboration of Kuala Lumpur City Hall [DBKL].

Goh said that “The Iron” would soon be travelling to other states, to give more Malaysians a chance to see the attraction.

The retailer has also placed other giant installations in some of the city’s high-traffic areas, including an interactive water tap at Dataran Merdeka, where visitors can draw drinking water, to a paint roller and battery charger at Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur, a giant Disney tumbler at Mid Valley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur and a dinosaur plush toy, and football at MyTown Cheras Kuala Lumpur. The different installations started from 5 September onwards.

Goh said that the installations serve the dual purpose of informing the public of the initiative, and for them to win prizes through the “#KecilBesarMRDIYada Snap & Win Contest”.

All contestants have to do is to snap a photo at one of the installations, upload it on social media with the KecilBesarMRDIYada hashtag, and submit it on the contest microsite.

There are prizes worth RM20,000 up for grabs, including a 4-hour yacht trip for up to 12 pax worth RM6,000, a 30-minute helicopter ride around Kuala Lumpur for 4 pax worth RM4,500, an ‘Omakase’ fine dining experience for 2 pax worth RM2,000, and MR D.I.Y. cash vouchers worth RM100 each for 100 winners.

Youth climate justice activists strut their advocacies on the runway for Global Climate Strike

Wazzup Pilipinas

In a powerful display of climate advocacy and historical remembrance, Youth Advocates for Climate Action Philippines Inc. (YACAP), a member of the Fridays for Future movement led by global climate activist Greta Thunberg, delivered a compelling message of hope and resistance through their fashion show protest at Studio 72, Quezon City, on September 15.

The event entitled "Fashion Against Fascism and Fossil Fuels. Empire of the Son: Drought and Deluge" showcased a ready-to-wear collection that emphasized the role of the country’s ineffective and authoritarian leadership in exacerbating the climate crisis. It is part of a broader effort to amplify the voices calling for the Global Day Against Fossil Fuels and the Global Climate Strike, which stands as a key component in the multi-sectoral movement against the historical distortion perpetuated by the current Marcos administration.

“This show hopefully serves as a reminder of the historical and political in which our climate challenges persist,” said Mitzi Jonelle Tan, YACAP's international spokesperson. “As the 51st anniversary of Ferdinand Marcos Sr.’s Martial Law approaches, it is important to realize that the effects of his regime persist today, and are mirrored by his son Marcos Jr.’s first year of presidency. From large-scale mining and reclamation projects to inadequate disaster risk management plans, to the administration’s intolerance to dissent, it is clear that there is an urgent need to address climate and historical injustices.”

Activists, influencers, artists, and celebrities, conveyed a powerful narrative that linked fashion and music to six key climate action issues during the first year of Marcos's Presidency — displacement, environmental plunder, mental health, food insecurity, disinformation, and human rights violations. This fusion of art and advocacy culminated in a protest action at the end of the program, in which the producers, designers, and models, including singer-songwriter Zild Benitez and drag queen Maria Christina, carried signs calling for the protection of environmental defenders. This is especially poignant as the Global Witness recently reported the Philippines as the most deadliest country in Asia for environmental defenders for a decade.

Tan’s impassioned words encapsulate the essence of "Fashion Against Fascism and Fossil Fuels. Empire of the Son: Drought and Deluge" and the broader mission of YACAP. “We hope to call on this generation to take up the endeavor of fighting for climate and social justice. Through fashion or any other method, let us continue to hold Marcos Jr. accountable for his anti-people and anti-environment policies. Let this be a rallying cry for a better future, one where our leaders prioritize the well-being of both the planet and its people."

Verstappen & Perez Compete In The World’s Cleanest Challenge Ahead Of Singapore Race Weekend

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

On their return to Singapore, Oracle Red Bull Racing champions, Max Verstappen and Sergio “Checo” Perez, embraced a uniquely fun challenge. They hopped on motorized cleaning carts, racing on a specially constructed indoor track, in the cleanest race ever, all within the stunning Jewel Changi Airport.

The first part, a mock sprint race, began with an electrifying "Le Mans" style start. Max gained an early advantage by firing up his cleaning cart first. He maintained a solid lead until Checo attempted to take a shortcut that violated track limits, securing Max's victory.

In the subsequent Cleaning Challenge, the drivers navigated an expanded track with obstacles like muddy footprints, dirt, rubbish, and leaves. Max, starting in pole position, maintained his lead throughout the race until an exciting head-to-head battle emerged in the back section of the course. Despite Checo's attempts to overtake him, Max held his ground. During the pit stop, it was clear that Max's vehicle had cleaned more debris. With a significant lead, Max sprinted (albeit slowly) to the finish line, clinching first place in the inaugural World’s Cleanest Race. He was presented with a pre-broken trophy in recognition of his victory by Oracle Red Bull Racing ambassador, Josh Denzel, sparing him the effort of breaking it himself.

“It was great,” stated Checo when asked about the challenge. “When I got to see the cart for the first time, I was shocked with it.”

When asked about the unique nature of today’s event, Max laughed stating, “At this stage, being with the team, I’m quite used to it. They come up with quite a lot of things so this was another one."

Supported by Jewel Changi Airport and the Singapore Tourism Board, there was no better venue to host the event than at the world's best airport, renowned for its autonomous fleet of cleaning robots, offering a stunning backdrop featuring the world's tallest indoor waterfall nestled within the lush indoor forest.

With Singapore as a vibrant backdrop, a city renowned for its diverse culinary culture, captivating attractions, and lush gardens, the beauty of the Lion City and FORMULA 1’s first night street race has always been an attraction for avid racing fans and the Oracle Red Bull Racing drivers, as well.

It’s always good to be in Singapore. It’s an incredible track and the fact that it’s a night race makes it even more special. It is of course a very warm race which can be challenging, so it’s definitely one of the toughest races on the calendar,” said Max.

Checo echoed similar sentiments, adding, “It’s a track that’s really hard on us and the cars. We just have to deliver to the maximum.”

The one-of-a-kind World’s Cleanest challenge, held ahead of the highly anticipated Singapore Grand Prix (15 to 17 September), was just the warm-up the racers favoured before tackling the big one. It’s at the forthcoming night race that Checo hopes to repeat his incredible performance from last year.

“That would be really nice to repeat what we did last year,” said Checo. “I look forward to it, and hopefully we are able to have a tremendous race.”

Max, in particular, is focused on extending his record-breaking streak with a potential first-time victory in Singapore.

“Street circuits always bring a few more challenges but we’ll definitely try,” declared Max. “We have a quick car, but we know that on a street circuit there are a lot of other cars that can be quick as well and the gaps will be very tight. We of course want to win so let’s see what we can do.”
