SDCA Comm majors make it to 3SF cut

Wazzup Pilipinas!

A group of third year Communication students from St. Dominic College of Asia made it to the finals of the new Three Shots Film (3SF) festival organized by Media Underground or MUD Studios.

The short film “Laruan” from JKLC Production is included among the 20 finalists in the unique competition. It also serves as the group’s midterm requirement in their Introduction to Film subject.

The organizers from MUD Studios challenged student participants 16 to 25 years old to make a short film using only three shots and three cuts for a story composed of a beginning, middle and end, with a minimum running time of one minute and a maximum of 15 minutes.

In “Laruan,” a mother (Jhody Alessandra Sacramento) goes to the market and leaves her daughter (Janelle Nathalie Duro) under the care of her brother (Carvin Klein Dela Cruz). The uncle shows a toy as a surprise gift toy to his niece.

Helping Sacramento and Dela Cruz capture the shots and record their actions on camera are Kristzen Joy Mendoza and Lourdes Mae De Gala. Mendoza, who currently serves as president of the SDCA student organization Association of Dominican Communicators, also edited and scored the film.

“We are classmates and close friends at the same time, and we want to challenge ourselves in portraying a story through film in just three shots,” said Sacramento, who also directed the film.

“That's why we decided to join the Three Shots Film Festival, not just for the competition but this is also considered as a new and great experience for us,” she added.

“We are inspired by the current issues that are present in our country. As we see the horrific news that these victims encounter, we simply had an idea to be their voice in showing the harsh reality that these kinds of sensitive issues are not merely fiction,” De La Cruz shared.

“Laruan” and 19 other 3SF finalists are available for viewing on MUD’s website (https://www.mud-studios.net/) from November 5 to 11. The site is “an alternative content platform that offers a catalog of independent films, festival entries, and original content dealing with a wide variety of real-life themes.”

The Best Film, Best Direction, Best Cinematography, and People’s Choice award winners will receive cash or special prizes and plaques of recognition during the awards night on November 12, 8 p.m.

MUD Studios will award three pieces Selens Redhead Lights with light stand kit while Kase Lens PH will also give away a four-lens kit worth 12,000 pesos, including a travel case bag, 7.5mm fisheye lens, 16mm wide-angle lens, 25mm macro lens, 65mm telephoto lens, two clip mounts, and cleaning cloth as prizes.

The jury of the 3SF festival is composed of filmmakers Arvin Belarmino, Mark Tristan Cua, Emmanuel Dela Cruz, and Peter Mackie.

Benilde film “CITSALP” vies at Animahenasyon after winning in Italy

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

A short animation written and directed by a De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde film student will next compete at Animahenasyon 15: The 2021 Philippine Animation Festival from November 12 to 14.

This after the animated film “CITSALP” by Jean A. Evangelista won the Porto Cesareo Film Festival Marine Protected Area Award or “the best audiovisual work dedicated to the sea” in Italy.

“CITSALP,” which tells about the negative effects of plastics in the world and the responsible consumption and production of plastics, is a collaboration among Evangelista and animators Ria Caluya, Shane Sitchon, Adrienne Jade, Aljean Respecia Uyan, Jlo Casa, and Ria Morales, editor Ayen Alvarez, sound designers John Patrick Perez and Dan Verzosa, production manager Arkin Tracy Tendilla, assistant directors Verzosa and Lawrence Soriano, and musical scorer Hannah Felix.

Evangelista, who received a cash prize of 700 euros from Porto Cesareo, is “very thankful for the award” to the organizers and to her team, Project CITSALP, which has been “the heart and soul of the film.”

“I never thought that this film would push through because I didn’t have any illustrators and animators before. In addition, I was highly depressed when this film was in production,” Evangelista revealed.

Porto Cesareo Film Festival artistic director Anna Seviroli shared that the selection committee viewed and evaluated “about 3,000 works from all over the world including shorts, mini shorts, documentaries from Italy, Mexico, India, Philippines, Spain, United Kingdom, Egypt, United States, Iran, and Spain.”

The first edition of the film festival was held as part of the Environmentalist Coordination pro Porto Cesareo’s “A-Mare I Giovani” project and co-financed by the Action and Cohesion Plan-Notice “Youth for the social ed. 2018” of the Department of Youth Policies-Presidency of the Council of Ministers and the Municipality of Porto Cesareo.

Evangelista said that the Porto Cesareo award “simply inspires me to do more films about the environment, to help save mother nature.”

“And I want to let other young filmmakers be inspired to never stop dreaming. Even if there are hardships in life, you should never stop making films that touches people’s lives and hearts through filmmaking,” the student filmmaker added.

“CITSALP” was also selected to vie in different international animation and film festivals in Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Croatia, Greece, Indonesia, Poland, Romania, and the US, aside from Italy and the Philippines.

Animahenasyon 15, which is organized by the Animation Council of the Philippines, Inc., aims to cultivate and showcase Filipino talent in animation. The festival is comprised of animated films in competition or Anikompetisyon and a three-day conference. To purchase tickets, visit their website at https://www.animationcouncil.org/animahenasyon.

“CITSALP” and 19 other finalists of Anikompetisyon will be shown online at the Animahenasyon Facebook page on Nov. 12 from 2:45 to 6:15 p.m. The Top 5 winners will each receive a trophy, certificate and 20,000 pesos in cash prize while the other finalists will each receive a certificate.
