DENR-BMB renews call for stronger measures to combat illegal wildlife trade

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

On World Animal Day, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has reiterated its call for the approval of two Senate bills that seek to strengthen Republic Act 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act of 2001.

DENR-Biodiversity Management Bureau Director Datu Tungko M. Saikol said it is high time to amend the gaps in the law two decades after its implementation.

“We commend the House of Representatives for passing House Bill 9833 revising the Wildlife Act of 2001 on third and final reading, and call on our good Senators to pass Senate Bills No. 2078 and 2079 to strengthen our fight against wildlife crimes. Almost 20 years after the Wildlife Act took effect, the threat of extinction of wildlife species in the Philippines is still not far behind, wreaking havoc to our biodiversity that supports our livelihood and economy,” Saikol said on Monday, October 4.

“Illegal wildlife trade, which is the second biggest threat to species survival globally, increases the risks of zoonotic diseases, or the transfer of diseases from animal to humans, leading to outbreaks,” Saikol said. “With the lessons learned from the Covid-19 pandemic, it is imperative to pass a strengthened wildlife conservation and protection law without delay,” he also asserted.

Saikol also mentioned that the law, once amended, will effectively deter wildlife trafficking not only in the country, but also in other global destination points. “As a result, it will prevent if not eliminate the incidence, at least in the Philippines, of another infectious disease such as Covid-19, which originated in animals and caused unprecedented loss of human lives worldwide,” he also said.

SB 2078 and SB 2079, filed by Senator Cynthia Villar and Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri, respectively, seek the imposition of stronger and more specific penalties, the strengthening of enforcement capacity, and the removal of legal loopholes exploited by illegal wildlife traders.

From 2010 to 2020, more than 67,500 wildlife specimens worth at least P248M were confiscated from 523 suspected law violators. At least 153 criminal complaints have been filed in court, with 29 cases resolved and 47 criminals convicted.

The Philippines, among the world’s 17 mega-diverse countries that host two-thirds of the Earth’s biodiversity, has become an important source, transit, and destination point for illegal wildlife trade, which is now the fourth largest illegal trade worldwide behind illegal drugs, arms, and human trafficking.

The value of illegal wildlife trade in the country is estimated at P50 billion yearly or $1 billion, including the market value of wildlife and its resources, their ecological role and value, damage to habitats, and loss in potential ecotourism revenues.

Binibining Pilipinas Organization apologized for its now-deleted "natural woman" post

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. (BPCI) drew flak after it showed a photo of Miss International Philippines Hannah Arnold along with the description “natural woman” in a now-deleted Facebook post last October 1.

“The organization has always been about celebrating Filipinas of all backgrounds. We will never consciously do anything to minimize the experience and the truth of anyone”

The Binibining Pilipinas Organization has apologized for its now-deleted "natural woman" post that sparked criticism from netizens.

"Not sure if Binibining Pilipinas is purposely trying to be shady or this is just bad timing but when has a lesbian ever been less of a natural woman? Lesbians, Bisexual Women have always been AFAB (A Female Assigned at Birth) so is BBP saying lesbians are not natural women? Isn’t BBP supposed to empower women? Guess I might be reading too much into this but what I’m sure of is this post is shady as hell.

Update: BBP has removed the post many keep receipts. They saved the screenshots. Not good BBP.

P.S. No hate towards Hannah Arnold. Love her. Hope she wins, she’s lovely, intelligent and deserving. This isn’t her fault. Who should be held accountable among the admins, if more than one, that’s running the BBP Facebook Page?"

In the words of Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach herself, "think before you click."

"We are surrounded by it (corruption)."

“…if we can eradicate that (corruption), we can solve so many problems and we can get through a pandemic easily the next time we go about it”

“Would you rather live in a world without pandemic or without corruption?”

Mas nahirapan pa yung nagtanong kesa sumagot. May threat ba from her fellow judges? Hahaha!

Obvious na she ain't comfortable. Parang gusto niyang palitan tanong niya hahaha

Awesome answer, Candidate #10. The best answer so far. Authentic, on point, realistic. Harry Roque and Bong Revilla are shaking. She nailed it!

She was skimming the judges while saying "we are surrounded by corruption". "We're surrounded by it" literally.

Talking about corruption in front of Harry Roque and Bong Revilla as judges.

QUEEN. PERIOD.

Yes, Roque. The front runner in the upcoming presidential election is a woman. And her children are still young. VP Leni Robredo will truly serve the Filipino people as our new President.

Harry Roque’s question about a female running for presidency is not coincidental. And why does he need to laugh at Candidate #6’s beautiful, spot-on answer?!

The biggest laugh tonight goes to Harry Roque. His audacity to ask a question that is clearly intended to offend Leni was gracefully answered by a candidate who supports women. Not to mention another Q&A about corruption, I Can't imagine his reaction.

Two ladies both gave the best burn/dragged-them-down answers that made the corrupt officials in the room uncomfortable.

Meanwhile, Ganiel Krishan, a journalist from ABS-CBN is ready to set the stage on fire and the mic to voice out and empower

Petition to have candidate #43 as a possible host next year because she did so well. Brava! Also, she’s a reporter from ABS-CBN so I hope Harry Roque is choking during her portion.

Congratulations to Kapamilya Ganiel Krishnan for finishing as the second runner-up in Miss World Philippines 2021!

Miss Iloilo City wins the Best National Costume Award in Miss World Philippines 2021.

Taray! Ang daming host..bongga kayo day! Noontime show ba yarn?!

Heto na nman. Anong alam ng mga politiko sa pag judge sa beauty pageants?

"Thank you every one for sharing your expertise tonight," sabi ng host. Hello? Expertise ni Revilla at Roque? plunder at magsinungaling!

Miss World Philippines 2021 Tracy Maureen Perez fell twice on stage: before the announcement of winners and while she was taking her first walk as a queen. Despite the fall, Tracy stood up, held her crown, and got back to her feet.

Back to back beauty pageant incident: Miss Universe Philippines 2020 Rabiya Mateo nadapa sa final walk while the fresh reigning Miss World Philippines Tracy Maureen Perez nadulas.

Okay lang matumba, at least may korona!

"Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall"
