Araneta City Helps Spread Breast Cancer Awareness with ‘I Pink I Can’

Wazzup Pilipinas!

To help support Breast Awareness Month this October, Araneta City held I Pink I Can: Breast Cancer Awareness Event in the Gateway Mall Activity Area on October 13, 2019 at 3pm. The City is holding various activities meant to provide information regarding breast cancer, with Miss Universe 2011 3rd Runner-up Shamcey Supsup, who will also host the event, and sisters Dianne and Katrina Medina taking center stage to help in spreading awareness.

Breast cancer is a serious issue here in the Philippines. It has been reported that the country has the highest incidence rate in Asia and is among the top countries in the world with the most cases of breast cancer. In fact, one out of every 13 Filipinas are expected to develop breast cancer in their lifetime.

But all is not lost. Breast cancer is preventable and curable, with modern medicine starting to find solutions for this. At the same time, the number of breast cancer survivors has been increasing steadily. All of this wouldn’t be possible without proper education and awareness, which is exactly what “I Pink I Can” hopes to provide for the Araneta City community.

Aside from being a beauty queen, Shamcey is also an advocate of awareness for breast cancer; as are TV hosts, sisters Dianne and Katrina Medina. The two shared insights through inspirational messages and games they held for the audience.

There were also be talks given by the Philippine Cancer Society, Dr. Rachael Rosario, and Vilma Quismondo, a breast cancer survivor herself. Different activities happened in between the talks such as a Bra Cup Filler Making, and a DIY Pink Tee activity. Registration for the event started at 11am. Customers aged 20 years old and above who registered also availed of a free breast cancer screening.

In addition to the “I Pink I Can” event, Araneta City also painted its pedestrian lanes pink for the month of October to spread awareness and encourage education regarding breast cancer.

“I Pink I Can” is presented by Araneta City in partnership with Philippine Cancer Society, Qualimed, Rustans, Tony and Jockey Salon, Michaela Lifestyle, and Latt Liv. For more information and other Araneta City updates, follow @AranetaCity on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

PHLPost Releases Stamps to Mark the 150th Birth Anniversary of General Trias

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) and the City Government of General Trias, Cavite has released new personalized stamps to commemorate the 150th Birth Anniversary of General Mariano Trias (1869-2019), a revolutionary hero and the first Vice-President of the Philippines.

The personalized stamps will feature the façade of the iconic post office, the image of General Mariano Closas Trias at the background and the 150 years sesquicentennial birth anniversary logo imprinted on the stamps.

The city government is set to pay homage to its local hero, General Mariano Closas Trias with fitting tribute and commemorative celebration on October 12.

City Mayor Antonio “Ony” Alandy Ferrer, Cavite 6th District Rep. Luis 'Jon Jon' Ferrer IV, Vice Mayor Morit Sison, PHLPost Postmaster VII Glen Granados and Mega Manila Marketing head Diosdada Marquez led the ceremonial launching of the personalized stamps.

Gen. Trias was considered the first de facto Vice President of the Philippines during the revolutionary government established at the Tejeros Convention under General Emilio Aguinaldo on March 25, 1897.

Gen. Mariano Trias was born Oct. 12, 1869 to parents Don Balbino Trias and Gabriela Closas in their house in Barangay Bagumbayan here. He died Feb. 22, 1914 at age 45 in Manila.

On Feb. 28, 1914, Legislative Act No. 2390 was passed by the Philippine Assembly, changing the town's name to Malabon.

Six years later on Feb. 24, another Legislative Act No. 2889 was approved, finally renaming the town after one of its most famous sons, General Mariano Trías.
