Simple Decorating Tricks for Your Bedroom

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Renting a room, instead of a whole apartment, is an approach many young people use today to save on accommodation expenses. Imagine looking through tons of hdb room rental adverts and managing to find the perfect room that first your price range.

However, the only downside is the interior is not to your taste and personal style. You spend most of your time in your bedroom, so by all means you should be living in a space that you actually like.

Here, we have compiled some simple decorating tricks that can give any bedroom a makeover.

1. Pile on the pillows

Pillows are an inexpensive way of adding interest to your room. Pile them on! The more the merrier. Piling on the pillows is an artform in and of itself. Mix and match patterns. Combine large prints with small ones. Play around with colors that may or may not match. Not only do the pillows serve a decorative purpose, they are for comfort as well!

2. DIY artwork

Tired of the blank walls in your rented bedroom? There are many ways for you to DIY artwork. If you have the skill, make a large painting on your own. It adds a personal touch to an otherwise bare space. If you’re not as artsy as you would like to be, look for a tapestry or graphic quilt. This is an easy and inexpensive solution to blank walls. And if you want to personalize the decor in your room, you may find a reliable brand of sewing machine to make that happen.

3. Put pattern to work

Play around with patterns, such as in a printed bedsheet or quilt cover. This helps add some visual interest to attract the eye and disrupt the monotony that can come from monochrome color schemes.

4. Incorporate prints on accessories

Patterns and prints are not only reserved for bedding. They are just as eye catching when you incorporate them in your décor as accent pieces. Think about a table lab with a damask lamp shade, or even an alarm clock shaped like a bright red tomato!

5. Work the walls

If space is your major dilemma, think about adding foldable and adjustable pieces affixed to the walls. Add some foldable night stands, or adjustable lamps. You could even add some wall shelves for the extra storage space. Of course, do take note that you have to fill in any patches after you move out.

6. Decorate with consistency

Do remember that while you have a free hand to decorate your room as you’d like, make sure you tie them all together to give consistency to your space. A look that is tied together brings serenity and peace, allowing your bedroom to be the epitome of comfort.

7. Comfort is key

Make your bedroom comfy. Of course, this is a no-brainer since you rest and relax in it. Consider adding a touch extra comfort, such as a down comforter. Make your bed indulgent but that also says “come here, come here to me”.

8. Choose a focal point

This is an age-old design concept. Choose a piece of furniture to act as the focal point in your room. Whether you want to center your bed with the walls, or angle it at a corner, make sure the eye is focused on the main piece of furniture, and let the rest add on to it.

9. Keep scale in mind

Do recall one of the key concepts of design: scale! Be sure every piece of furniture and décor in your bedroom is proportionate to each other. You wouldn’t pair a large king size bed with tiny bedside tables. Neither would you add a large dresser beside a small desk. Play around with the proportions and scale of your room to come up with the perfect fit.

10. Introduce pops of color

If you want color, and you’re not allowed to paint the walls, think about injecting it through your art and accessories. These accent pieces are a good way to give a good visual pop in your room.

11. Pay attention to the floor

Just because your bed is the center of comfort in your room, doesn’t meant that you should neglect the floors. Look out for a nice big rug for your bedroom floor. Add a burst of sunshine to your low-key room with a cheery yellow rug. You never know, with the addition of a few throw pillows, this could be your answer to more sitting space in your room.

12. Layer with color

If color is your thing, you can play around with color in your room. Layer different complementary colors over each other. Or even go for a one-color scheme but adding different layers of saturation.

13. Add warmth with neutrals

If color is not your thing, no worries. You can add some unexpected warmth to your room with some soft lighting and neutral color tones. They add a sense of comfort to your otherwise plain looking bedroom.

14. Reinvent your safe haven

Add a zest of reinvention to your room to make things as unexpected as possible. Tuck a plush armchair into a corner to create a small resting nook or reading spot. Add in some lush draperies to turn your room from bright in the morning to a warm cocoon at night.

15. Make rest a priority

Your bedroom is your retreat; your safe haven. It is a sanctuary for you to enjoy your peace and quiet as much as it is a place for resting and recuperating. While décor is an essential part of any space, make sure that the priority of your space and décor should be on your rest and your health.

In the main event of the evening, Team Lakay’s Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon dazzled once again with another ferocious display of striking, obliterating opponent Andrew Leone of the United States within two rounds. Action was fierce and relentless from start to finish, and began with Belingon swarming Leone from the sound of the opening bell. As the American tried desperately to stave off attacks which came from all directions, Belingon continued to put on the pressure. In the second round, Belingon connected on a thunderous spinning side kick that sent Leone to the canvas, where he followed and unloaded an unending volley of strikes to earn the technical knockout victory and the GoDaddy KO of the Night.

In the co-main event of ONE: HEROES OF HONOR, international kickboxing superstar Giorgio “The Doctor” Petrosyan made a spectacular ONE Championship debut, outworking former Lion Fight World Champion “Smokin’” Jo Nattawut of Thailand. In an offensive clinic against Nattawut, Petrosyan tore apart his opponent with the surgical precision he has become known for, putting together dynamic punch combinations in addition to his pinpoint accurate kicks. Answering every strike that Nattawut unleashed, Petrosyan outworked his opponent to pick up a unanimous decision win in his first bout for ONE Super Series.

The stunning career resurgence of former ONE Featherweight World Champion Honorio “The Rock” Banario as a lightweight division mainstay continued at ONE: HEROES OF HONOR, where he edged out perennial contender Adrian Pang after three rounds. Banario showcased his pinpoint striking early on, peppering Pang with his patented left hook and razor-sharp kicks. Although Pang boldly traded strikes with his Filipino foe and found success in landing hard body shots, Banario showed superiority in ring generalship, creating spaces to clobber his opponent with long jabs and snapping kicks to the body. As Pang stepped on the gas pedal and pressed the action in the third round, Banario’s intelligent movement notched him a split decision.

Making his ONE Super Series debut, legendary Nong-O Gaiyanghadao of Thailand took on former two-time WBC Muay Thai World Champion Fabio Pinca of Lyon, France in a spirited Muay Thai contest featuring plenty of action and excitement. The two traded their best shots in three solid rounds of action, but it was Gaiyanghadao who showcased superior technique, plastering Pinca with thudding left kicks to the midsection and scoring with his patented sweeps. In the end, all three judges ruled the bout in favor of Gaiyanghadao, earning the former four-time Lumpinee Stadium champion a unanimous decision victory.

Former ONE Featherweight World Champion Marat “Cobra” Gafurov made quick work of up-and-coming American featherweight contender Emilio Urrutia, winning by way of first-round submission, placing himself back on the winning track. Returning to his stellar and fearsome form as a highly-touted competitor, Gafurov showcased his world-class grappling once again, effortlessly putting Urrutia to sleep courtesy of a wrenching arm triangle choke.

Rekindling the intense rivalry between South Korea and Japan, former world title challenger Dae Hwan Kim came out on top against Japanese legend Masakazu Imanari, winning by unanimous decision. Driven to victory against a grappling wizard like Imanari, Kim intelligently avoided putting himself at risk in his opponent’s submission wheelhouse and exerted his best effort to dictate the action from the stand-up. Although Imanari found a way to bring matters to the ground, Kim made sure that he had sturdy top control, with the leverage to rain down quick but solid ground-and-pound. After three gruelling rounds, all judges at ringside saw the bout in favor of Kim.

Cosmo Alexandre left a lasting impression in his ONE Super Series debut, defeating Elliot Compton in their Muay Thai clash by way of second round knockout. The long-limbed Brazilian dynamo aced his maiden ONE Super Series assignment with flying colors, bringing down Compton with a shattering uppercut and a follow-up knee strike to the body. Reeling in excruciating pain, Compton failed to answer the count of ten, compelling the referee to wave off the bout, declaring Alexandre the victor via knockout in the second round.

In a bout that lasted just under two minutes, ONE Championship debutants Akihiro “Superjap” Fujisawa and Kaji “Alpha” Ebin walked out to the ring looking to engage. At the opening bell, Ebin marched forward wanting to trade strikes, but it was Fujisawa who would score on a single-leg takedown. Not long after, Ebin began complaining about a dislocated shoulder. At that point, referee Yuji Shimada called a halt to the contest after Ebin could no longer continue due to injury, which awarded Fujisawa with the submission victory.

In the first ONE Super Series bout of the evening, Regian Eersel impressively marched to a unanimous decision victory over Brad Riddell in a three-round kickboxing contest. Banking on his height and length, Eersel effortlessly pummeled Riddell with lashing strikes, including a solid knee to the midsection that dropped the Auckland, New Zealand native to the mat in the second round. Eersel closed out the final round of the match on a strong note, limiting Riddell’s offense with his counter strikes. In the end, Eersel was awarded a unanimous decision victory.

After falling short in her last outing, Gina Iniong of Team Lakay redeemed herself in front of a passionate hometown crowd, claiming a unanimous decision victory over former world title contender Jenny Huang. Iniong savored every strike that she threw at Huang as the latter gallantly traded shots with the highly-decorated Filipina wushu practitioner. Huang tried to change the complexion of the contest in the second round as she resorted to her grappling expertise, but Iniong surprisingly overpowered the submission specialist on the mat. In the final round, Iniong continued to wear out Huang on the ground, working her way towards a hard-earned decision victory.

Kicking off ONE: HEROES OF HONOR was a riveting three-round strawweight showdown between Indonesian standout Adrian Mattheis and China’s Lan Ming Qiang. Setting up a promising tone for the evening, both men went back-and-forth from bell to bell, exchanging thunderous strikes in the stand-up department while shooting for powerful takedowns. In the end, Mattheis dominated his opponent, emerging triumphant via unanimous decision.

DOE Partners with EU to Ensure Quality Energy Infrastructures

Wazzup Pilipinas!

ESTABLISHING EFFECTIVE MONITORING-VERIFICATION-ENFORCEMENT:Department of Energy (DOE) employees listen intently as Philippine Metrology, Standards, Testing and Quality, Incorporated (PhilMSTQ) President Cirila Sescon Botor conducts an orientation on ISO/IEC: 17020:2012 and ISO 9001 during the three-day DOE workshop setting the proper requirements to help outsourced inspection bodies in monitoring, verification, and enforcement (MVE) effectively.

The Department of Energy (DOE) collaborated with the European Union-Access to Sustainable Energy Programme (EU-ASEP) for a three-day intensive training to ensure the quality of energy infrastructures in the country.

The training-workshop began last Wednesday (11 April) and ended on Friday (13 April). The first day of the workshop was conducted at the F1 Hotel in Bonifacio Global City while the second and third days were at the Department of Energy's headquarters.

It focused on the Philippine National Quality Infrastructure (PNQI), which enables the development and compliance of the government agencies, specifically the DOE, with the increasing quality requirements in the energy industry. PNQI provides support to the national authorities in performing their mandates for consumer protection, free trade, environmental protection and other societal objectives.

“This will help build the capacity of the DOE to promote energy efficiency through monitoring, verifying and enforcing,” said DOE Assistant Secretary Robert Uy during his opening remarks who also acknowledged EU’s assistance in promoting PNQI awareness and knowledge.

The DOE-EU-ASEP partnership aims to provide the DOE with a working knowledge of the internationally-recognized standards and processes in the energy sector. This will also increase knowledge and appreciation on the PNQI benefits among government decision makers, legislators, regulators, industry and consumers.

The event tackled the standards issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the joint committee of ISO/International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that will be applied for the PNQI, namely, ISO/IEC 17020:2012 and ISO 9001.

ISO/IEC 17020:2012 sets out the criteria for the operation of various types of bodies performing inspection. ISO 9001, on the other hand, specifies requirements for quality management systems.

The workshop also discussed the main elements of national quality infrastructure including: metrology, standardization and accreditation to guarantee up-to-standards energy infrastructures. By definition, metrology is the guarantee of exact and reliable measurements; standardization is the description of properties, dimension, tolerance and other characteristics of products; and accreditation is the recognition of the product’s technical competence.

With the PNQI training, the DOE is enable to improve its guidelines in recognizing outsourced inspection bodies to better perform monitoring, verification and enforcement (MVE) of products and services.

Specifically, the DOE officials and staff were able to go through all of the requirements within ISO/IEC 17020:2012 and ISO 9001. With this, the DOE were able to plan the criteria that are going to applicable in properly setting the guidelines for MVEs.

As a result, the guidelines will initially be focusing on appliances, namely lighting, refrigeration and air conditioning, then will be branching out to other energy products and services.

Beyond the training, the DOE aims to benefit the consumers by ensuring that the services or products are safe and conforming to the quality standards.

Present during the training are the officials and staff of the DOE and EU-ASEP and the academe.
