5 Tips for Buying a Laptop

Wazzup Pilipinas!

When you think about how far laptops have come in the past few years, it's no wonder that so many people want to buy a laptop these days. There are many things one should consider when buying a laptop, especially since the variety of choices is increasing rapidly. Buying a laptop is an expensive investment, so you want to make sure you make a wise purchase. That's why I put together this list of five tips for buying a laptop. If you are a coder and want the best coding laptop, these tips will help you make the right purchase when you buy your new laptop.

#1 Size Definitely Matters

That's what she said. Just kidding. In all seriousness, one of the greatest variables to consider when buying a laptop is the size. This is because the size effects many other variables such as, the price, the convenience and how the laptop will meet your needs in terms of mobility. How often will you be traveling with your laptop? How much weight do you consider to be heavy? It's up to you to answer these questions for yourself before you buy a laptop.

The overall size of the computer will usually determine the size of the screen and the keyboard, as well. I for one, do not like typing on a small keyboard. So if I happen to be working on a laptop, I prefer that it is a large one with a good sized keyboard.

#2 The Right Touch Pad

Laptops all come with a built-in touch pad that serves as a mouse. Not all touch pads are created equally, however. Some touch pads offer features that others don't. You should test out the touch pad on the laptop you are considering to make sure it meets your standards. Some people just don't like using touch pads. I don't at all. Which raises another thing to be considered. What type of external mouses are available for the laptop? Although nowadays almost everything is USB, so that really shouldn't be too much of an issue.

#3 Optical Drive

Not very long ago, Apple released the Mac Book Air, a laptop that is super-slim because it does not have an optical CD/DVD drive. This is great because it makes the laptop extremely light and easy to carry in any type of bag or case. Of course, the obvious downside to this is that your laptop has no CD/DVD drive. So you can never watch a DVD on it, or pop in a blank CD to backup data or transfer files. To determine if you should buy a laptop without an optical drive, you need to really asses and evaluate what you will be using your computer for. Six months down the line you may run into a situation where you really regret not having that optical drive if you don;t really think this one through well enough.

#4 Count the Ports

From time to time, you are probably going to need to hookup external hardware to your laptop via USB or some other type of connection. This should also be given some serious consideration. Will two USB ports really be enough for you? Come on, be honest. If you have a printer, an iPod a digital camera, and a flash drive, that's already four separate devices that you may (for whatever reasons) want to have connected to your laptop simultaneously. If you don't have enough ports, you are out of luck. Not to mention, it's just annoying to have to constantly remove and connect different hardware all the time.

#5 Calculate a Realistic Budget

The reason I say calculate a "realistic" budget is because it's far too easy to go overboard when buying a computer. Especially with all the financing that is available from companies like, DELL and Apple. $2,000 doesn't look so bad when it's presented as only $30 a month. But when you're still paying that bill two years from now and you now want another new computer, it's going to be a huge bummer, and you will regret overspending. Having a realistic spending goal will also narrow down your decisions for you by eliminating those laptops which are simply out of your spending range.

NexLogic to Provide Free Internet Access through Cable Providers

Local Internet Service Provider (ISP) NexLogic Telecommunication Network Inc. will be providing Free Internet Access through Cable TV providers in selected areas around the country. The free Internet access will be provided through a cable modem purchased by the customer for P2,999, it is a onetime purchase and does not have a monthly service fee.

Beginning this month, cable TV subscribers of Laguna Bay Vision and Telemarc Cable Laguna will have access to NexLogic’s free Internet service called Juan’s Internet Philippines (JIP), it provides free access to all general information, education and Philippine government websites (e.g. *.org, *.edu, *.gov.ph), as well as, to selected interesting content and useful services, such as skype, whatsapp and facebook messenger. The concept is similar to Free-To-Access Broadcast TV services, wherein one needs only buy a TV set. In JIP’s case, CATV subscribers only need a modem to access a wealth of content and services from sites like Wikipedia, TESDA, UP Open University, PhilHealth, SSS.

In addition to the freely accessible sites, subscribers have three gigabytes monthly allocation that they may use to browse commercial sites and on-line services, including popular ones such as Facebook and YouTube. Should users need more than the free allocation, they can avail of affordable prepaid packages. The prepaid packages, have no data usage caps and are time based, they will be available in 6-hour, 24-hour, 7-day and 30-day increments.

JIP will allow cable internet providers to provide internet service on top of their cable television service. According to Louis Casambre of NexLogic: “Cable TV providers are best positioned to deliver broadband internet because video channels are high bandwidth applications, internet via cable is the best way to deliver fixed line broadband after fiber optic cable.”

Broadband Internet access was recently cited as a basic human right by the United Nations Human Right Council in a report of the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression. “Internet connectivity in the Philippines is one of the most expensive in Asia and the digital divide is growing because of it. Those with internet access can reap its benefits while those who do not get left behind. Our aim with JIP is to bring down the cost of internet access and remove the financial barriers to broadband internet access” Mr. Casambre added.

Another UN Agency the World Bank have shown that for every 10 percent increase in broadband penetration results in a 1.38% increase in econoamic growth for low to medium income economies.

The availability of internet access devices are no longer an issue for NexLogic’s service. Their cable modems have built-in Wi-Fi, meaning that to access the internet, all user needs is a device with Wi-Fi access like a smart phone a tablet, or a laptop.

To ensure that cable companies are competitive with established ISPs and Telcos, NexLogic will maintain a constant subscriber to uplink ratio to guarantee that the network is never oversubscribed and can deliver constant internet speeds all the time. Over-subscription usually results in significant network slowdowns especially during peak hours. “There have been many complaints about the speed and cost of internet service, over-subscription is one of the reasons why the quality of retail Internet service in the Philippines the way it is, by maintaining service quality our partners will remain competitive with incumbent providers” Mr. Casambre said.

Eugene Toquero Vows to Give it His All at One: Hero's Dream

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Filipino fan-favorite Eugene Toquero will be making his fourteenth trip to the cage as a professional mixed martial arts competitor on 3 November, and he will be doing so in front of a passionate crowd in Yangon, Myanmar.

The fans at the iconic Thuwunna Indoor Stadium will be entertained by the flamboyant flyweight Toquero once more on the undercard of ONE: HERO’S DREAM when he takes on highly-touted Chinese prospect Ma Hao Bin.

Toquero dropped his last three outings and is in dire need of a win as he returns to action on 3 November.

The 36-year-old Filipino veteran lost two of his scheduled bouts in 2016, yielding to reigning ONE Flyweight World Champion Adriano Moraes via first-round submission in March before tasting the same fate at the hands of Team Lakay’s Danny Kingad in December.

Having his hand raised in triumph remained elusive to Toquero in April of this year when he bowed down to Indonesian standout Stefer Rahardian by way of unanimous decision.

As he desires to place himself on the winning track again, Toquero stressed that he has made some crucial adjustments to his preparation.

“I have made other adjustments. I train longer and harder now. I don’t want to be complacent because I am not getting any younger. This is a huge organization with a lot of very good martial artists from all over the world,” he said.

“I will give my best in this bout. I will leave everything on the line,” Toquero declared.

Toquero is confident that if his Chinese foe takes him lightly, it would be a catastrophic mistake.

“If my opponent did not train well, then I will eat him alive inside the cage. I am hungry for that win,” he stated.

The man standing in his re-entry to the winner’s column is Ma, who has strung together an impressive 7-1 professional record that includes three wins by submission and one by knockout.

In Ma’s recent trip to the ONE Championship cage, he submitted “The Wolf Of The Grasslands” Hexigetu in their flyweight affair at ONE CHAMPIONSHIP: SHANGHAI this past September, courtesy of a guillotine choke, with ten seconds remaining in round number two.

Toquero hopes that his experience will pay dividends when they meet across the cage, but he won't be paying too much attention to his adversary's game plan.

According to Toquero, the key to victory is in focusing on himself and making his A-game the priority.

"I never study my opponents. I do not care who they are because in Muay Thai and my amateur fights we never knew who our opponents were. We train in the gym and enhance our strengths," he shared.

With a fresh outlook and his back against the wall, Toquero is driven to break his losing spell and redeem his status as one of the most exciting flyweights in the Asian region.

"This time, l will make sure that my hand is raised as the winner. I am not going home with a loss on 3rd of November," he ended.
