We would like to share with you some photos from the local training of the Axe Apollo team. The members include Evan Rey Datuin, Chino Roque and Ramil Santos.

All of them will fly to Florida, USA to train at Space Camp, where they will train and compete against more than 100 representatives from 60 countries. One of them is guaranteed to fly to space in 2014.

Their local training included sessions at Crossfit MNL to improve their stamina and strength. Another part of the training is scuba diving which is a simulation of  a zero-gravity environment. That’s the closest they can get to weightlessness. This activity also tests their breathing techniques.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) expresses its sincere appreciation to the outpouring of messages and support from partners in the international travel community such as the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), and World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) for the Filipino people affected by the recent Super Typhoon Yolanda (international name: Haiyan).

In a press release posted on their website, UNWTO expressed readiness to support the Philippines in any tourism-related recovery program for the affected areas and called for support by contributing to the ongoing relief efforts of the various United Nations (UN) agencies operating on the ground. The UNWTO, as the leading international organization in the field of tourism, is the UN agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable, and universally accessible tourism.

“UNWTO is confident that despite this tragic occurrence, the tourism sector in the Philippines will continue to strive and make a key contribution to the development of the country”, UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai said.

Top-ranked speaker and master trainer, Boris Joaquin was recently appointed the Philippine Ambassador for the Private Sector by the Metro World Child Foundation based in Brooklyn New York, USA. Metro World Child is a global faith-based, humanitarian organization serving nearly 100,000 children each week with after school programs, Sunday School services, child sponsorship, special programs and personal home visits.

In 2001, Metro World Child began a work in Manila, Philippines. The goal was to reach children and families who were living in situations that were in most cases, beyond their control. Metro World Child went to some of the most needy areas such as Smokey Mountain, Tondo, Navotas, and other impoverished locations throughout the Philippines. Over a decade later, we now reach 20,000 children and their families on a weekly basis here in the Philippines alone. Metro World Child has grown to include other nations such as South Africa, Kenya, Romania, and India, and combined, now reach over 100,000 children around the world.

Joaquin is delighted by this new appointed following his stints with World Vision and involvements with HOPE Foundation, Scholars for Jesus, World Teach and Bible League, his role to help connect Metro World Child’s programs for the street children with right partners and corporate donors. “This is timely…” Joaquin quips, “…After Typhoon Yolanda, children lost their families, families grieved for their children. Despite this, however, we still believe that there is something that even the strongest storm cannot take away from them.”
