Shaping Leaders of Tomorrow: Xavier Ateneo Teams Up with Fujitsu PH to Strengthen Connectivity Gearing Towards a Smart Digital Campus

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Digitalization is driving the education sector on to a profound transformation.

The report “The Road to Digital Learning” by Fujitsu showed that many schools, colleges, and universities have high aspirations for digital learning, in which academic establishments acknowledge the role of technology in improving the education milieu and creating equal opportunities.

In the Philippines, Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan believes that addressing the demands of digital learning is vital to enable advanced waves of educational approaches for her academic community.

Guided by its vision of becoming “A leading ASEAN University forming leaders of character by 2033,” Xavier Ateneo leverages on the benefits of information communications technology (ICT) to extend the best environment for its students.

XU has recently joined forces with Fujitsu Philippines, a global leader in providing ICT solutions, to boost the connectivity in all its five campuses across Cagayan de Oro City.

“Digitalization and connectivity have emerged as a necessity for educational institutions. It allows us to make our students globally competitive. To achieve it, we have invested a lot in building and improving our IT infrastructure across all campuses,” said Edison B. Sasoy, Xavier Ateneo Vice President for Administration.

“All our current and future ICT initiatives are centered on the university’s core processes that include teaching and learning system, research, and social development,” he added.

Advancing XU’s network infrastructure

In 2009, the university has first laid the backbone of its network infrastructure. Over the years, it has been upgraded to host more information and enterprise systems to allow for a more conducive and digitally-inclined learning environment.

Two of these systems are the Student Lifecycle Management and Information System (SLMIS) and eLearn, which manage all student-related services and business operations. These are web-based systems that manage student records, both academic and financial, in a secure, stable environment. Students in various levels — technical-vocational (Center for Integrated Technologies), college (undergraduate and graduate studies), professional (law and medicine), and continuing professional education levels are able to access their information anytime, anywhere.

The university’s Computing and Information Services Office (CISO) saw the need of further advancing the university’s IT infrastructure in terms of (1) connectivity, (2) security, and (3) high availability.

Harriet B. Fernandez, CISO Director, said that without a stable network infrastructure, all the information systems that they currently have and those that they plan to integrate will not be able to operate efficiently.

On top of that, XU also wants to blanket the whole campus with WiFi connection and bolster its IP-based telephone system.

The three components of the network system upgrade are set to significantly enhance the productivity of its faculty, staff, and students through the use of a fast and reliable network.

Reaching new heights

Fujitsu Philippines has played a key role in implementing Xavier University’s ICT network infrastructure plans.

In 2011, it has started the integration of solutions centered on Cisco and Ruckus products.

Cisco’s Catalyst 4500-X is the core that provides 10G connections across XU’s buildings and campuses. Cisco Nexus 9300, on the other hand, provides the data center infrastructure that connects its existing Unified Computing System (UCS) Server and NetApp Storage.

To ensure network security, Fujitsu translated XU’s security requirements by incorporating the Cisco ASA 5585 firewall with Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) and Advanced Malware Protection, and Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE). For added defense, Cisco IronPort Web Security Appliance was placed to protect the university from phishing sites and other online threats. This appliance also allows XU to implement policy-based web filters that enable easy implementation of the existing Information and Communications Technology (ICT) policies.

Ruckus Wireless System was also included to provide WiFi connection throughout the main campus and the annexes.

According to Fren Marlon B. Peralta, CISO - Computing and Network Services Unit Head, the upgrade has aided their team in boosting the capabilities of their network in which they are looking at an eight to 15-year lifecycle.

“Our next steps are now focused on the optimization of the converged campus network infrastructure, especially now that we are moving towards an online campus setup. All of the student services like admissions and enrollment, as well as student evaluation and assessment are now accessible online,” Peralta shared.

“Maybe, in the coming years, the university may also venture to offer online courses,” he added.

Xavier Ateneo is a private Jesuit-run university situated at the heart of Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines. At present, it caters to more than 14,000 students from basic education to secondary, tertiary, graduate, and professional studies.

XU operates on five campuses: Agriculture extension called Manresa; Center for Integrated Technologies on Masterson Avenue; XU Grade School campus in Macasandig; XU High School and Grade School Annex in Pueblo de Oro; and main senior high and tertiary campus along Corrales Avenue.

“We see the value of digitalization for advancing the capabilities of educational institutions in enabling for a better learning experience for their students. It is one of our thrusts to support these visions of providing a tool that would make learning fun, convenient, and available,” said Cricket Santiago, Fujitsu Philippines Chief Executive Officer.

“For Fujitsu Philippines part, we’ll continue extending our support and services to them.”

DOE Pushes for Widening of Energy Base at the Asia Cooperation Dialogue

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi called for the widening of the energy base with efficient and reliable power sources at the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) event in Panglao, Bohol on Tuesday.

In his keynote address at the opening of the three-day ACD, Cusi said the strategy can help nations secure their energy needs while addressing the challenges of climate change and energy affordability.

"We have a diversified energy mix, with nearly 24 percent of our power being sourced from renewable sources. And this diversified mix has proven to be competitive and sustainable,” Cusi said.

To achieve security and sustainability requires a three-pronged approach driven by three I’s: incentives, investments and innovation, according to Cusi.

“Governments must be willing to provide the necessary support for players who want to bring fresh energy solutions and thus, make electricity rates affordable to consumers," Cusi said.

He also said, “All players must be willing to invest in new technologies that not only increases reliability, but reduces emissions.”

“Innovation is the key driver that we need in order to achieve security and sustainability. Governments must develop a regulatory environment that supports our innovators and researchers,” he added.

With the three I’s approach, Cusi said, “Asia can produce its own visionary problem solvers. We must be resilient and stay the course.”

Meanwhile, the Energy Chief shared the country's solution to the hurdles faced by energy investors in Asia in the form of red tape and long waiting times.

As a solution, President Rodrigo Duterte signed Executive Order 30 that classifies energy projects amounting to at least US$70 million as projects of national significance, according to Cusi. EO 30 also streamlines permitting process of all government agencies under the Energy Investment Coordinating Council (EICC).

Under the EO, concerned government agencies must act on a proposal within 30 days. Otherwise, the proposal is deemed approved.

“Speed is of the essence here and we are determined to see that we pull in the best investments and build our projects on time to deliver on our domestic plan,” Cusi said.

“But it is not just enough to focus internally. It is also important to promote closer cooperation among our countries. Our diversity is our strength,” he added

The ACD will encourage member countries to develop the mechanisms to move forward with an Energy Plan of Action to pave way for initiatives on the nexus of critical resources, such as food, energy and water.

To be more resilient, Cusi said, “I believe that future initiatives should be focused on technological advancement and improved management practices must also be implemented. We need future-proof policies that would allow us to cope with natural and human-induced disasters.”

The Secretary concluded by showcasing the DOE’s consumer-focused energy campaign E-Power Mo! or the consumers’ “Power of Choice.”

Providing information on the fast-evolving developments in the energy sector, E-Power Mo! is a campaign that seeks to empower and educate consumers by giving them the power of choice and allowing them to better manage their energy consumption patterns.

Mutya ng Pilipinas 2017 Winners

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Congratulations to all the winners of Mutya ng Pilipinas 2017 during grand coronation night held on August 4, 2017 at the Performing Arts Theater of Resorts World Manila.

Six (6) lovely ladies took home the top titles namely:

Mutya Miss Asia Pacific International 2017: Ilene de Vera of Cebu
Mutya Miss Tourism International 2017: Jannie Alipo-on of Navotas City
Mutya Top Model of the World 2017: Hannah Khayle Iglesia of Isabela
Mutya Overseas Communities 2017: Savannah Gankiewicz of Hawaii
1st Runner-Up: Angela Carla Sandigan of Pateros
2nd Runner-Up: Sofia Sibug of Albay

A special title of Mutya Resorts World Manila was also given to Ilene de Vera of Cebu.

The grand coronation night was hosted by Raymond Guttierez and Bianca Gonzales, and there was also Jay-R as performer who serenaded the candidates at one part of the event, and gave another song immediately afterwards.

As expected, it has always been the Question and Answer portion that is seemingly the highlight of the event since it is there where we see and hear the candidates at their most fragile moment when they make break their high chance of winning just because of a blooper, mental block, or perceived lack of knowledge of the topic or subject matter indicate din the question. Since each of the finalists were asked different questions coming from different judges, there will always be a lucky one (or ones) who gets the easier questions mainly because they are familiar with the topic. We are sure that al these girls are smart and witty enough, but some may not be emotionally prepared to handle the stress of speaking out their minds in  front of a huge audience.

Wazzup Pilipinas did a Facebook Live coverage for most part of the event so please do search for the rest of the videos, divided into several parts for your convenience and also because the Internet connection at the site was very bad.  The rest of the coverage were taped so we could upload them on better quality on our social media channels like the Wazzup Pilipinas Facebook fan page at http://www.Facebook.com/wazzuppilipinas and / or YouTube channel at http://www.YouTube.com/user/wazzuppilipinas

We were also successful in asking (most of) the winners for a Wazzup Pilipinas iconic shout-out on video.

Miss Tourism Philippines 2017 Winners

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Congratulations to the 8 winners of Miss Tourism Philippines 2017, especially to the new Miss Tourism World for 2017, Marian Angelu Perez Alcantara, coming from the Filipino community of Melbourne, Australia.

Miss Tourism Luzon: Princess Kristha Singh (Pasig City)
Miss Tourism Visayas: Sofia Grace Galve (Umingan, Pangasinan)
Miss Tourism Mindanao: Ravilyn Dumdum (San Fernando, Pampanga)
1st Runner-Up: Sharla Santillan (Palawan)
2nd Runner-Up: Justiene Ortega (Manila)
3rd Runner-Up: Jyssy Jyn Almario (Noveleta, Cavite)

At the jampacked event, we all witnessed the awarding of special awards and the final top 8 winners concluding the event and gloriously recognizing those lovely ladies who stood out.

As always, it was the most awaited and highly dreaded Question and Answer portion that either made or broke the popular candidates winning chance. All the nervousness was very evident. It has always been the case for every beauty pageant that seeks for not only the most beautiful but also for the ones that are both intellectually and emotionally confident.

We are proud to have caught almost everything on our video coverage divided into several parts for your convenience. Some of the videos are embedded here but you can find the rest on our YouTube video channel at http://www.YouTube.com/user/wazzuppilipinas

Bibiano Fernandes Submits Andrew Leone to Remain One Bantamweight World Champion

Wazzup Pilipinas!
The largest sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship (ONE), returned to the glamorous entertainment capital of Asia with another evening of authentic world-class martial arts action. The Cotai Arena at The Venetian Macao played host to ONE: KINGS & CONQUERORS, featuring the absolute best in local and international martial arts talent. In the main event, Bibiano Fernandes remained the most dominant world champion in ONE Championship history by toppling American Andrew Leone. In the co-main event, Adriano Moraes overcame a spirited performance from Kairat Akhmetov to become the undisputed ONE Flyweight World Champion.

Defending ONE Bantamweight World Champion Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes made quick work of Andrew Leone, submitting the American challenger with a rear-naked choke in the first frame of the much-awaited championship clash. It was the beginning of the end for Leone when Fernandes hammered a knee to the midsection that slumped his opponent to the mat. The 37-year-old Brazilian authored the final sequence by latching on the match-ending submission, keeping the prestigious gold-plated strap securely fastened around his waist. With the impressive victory over Leone, Fernandes has set an unprecedented ONE Championship record of seven successful title defenses, remaining unbeaten in the promotion.

Bibiano Fernandes, ONE Bantamweight World Champion, stated: “I feel great. I feel great, thank you Macao for having me. Thank you for my family in Canada and my family in Brazil who are watching me right now. I am here to stay. I welcome all challenges. I want to say thank you to Chatri [Sityodtong] and Matt Hume. I’m happy with ONE Championship. I want to continue fighting. Whoever I have to fight, I will accept. I am always ready!”

In the co-main event, Adriano “Mikinho” Moraes of Brazil defeated Kairat Akhmetov of Kazakhstan via five-round unanimous decision to become the sole owner of the ONE Flyweight World Championship. Moraes, who previously held the interim title, controlled the majority of the action with his grappling while defending champion Akhmetov tried his best to fend off the Brazilian’s advances with his wrestling. On the feet, Moraes got the better of the exchanges and landed the harder blows. All three judges scored the bout in favor of Moraes, who unifies the flyweight titles to become the undisputed king of the division.

Adriano Moraes, ONE Flyweight World Champion, stated: “I’m not surprised [with the victory]. Thank you very much, one more time, for the opportunity, ONE Championship. I want to thank my coach, my family and my friends. I’m very grateful.”

Hard-hitting Russian featherweight Timofey Nastyukhin and former world title challenger Koji “The Commander” Ando of Japan figured in an incredibly tactical three-round matchup, with Nastyukhin coming away with a well-earned unanimous decision victory. After Ando nullified most of the action using his feints and pacing, Nastyukhin turned up the pressure in the second half of the contest, consistently landing the more telling blows. Both competitors unloaded their best offense in the final minute of the third round. All three judges saw the bout in favor of Nastyukhin.

Top lightweight contender Shannon “OneShin” Wiratchai made quick work of India’s Rajinder Singh Meena, winning by knockout just moments into a scheduled three-round bout. The Bangkok Fight Lab mainstay authored one of his quickest finishes yet, landing a right knee flush to Meena’s head from the clinch. Referee Olivier Coste wasted no time in calling a halt to the contest once he realized Meena was completely out of it. The end came officially at 29 seconds of round number one, and is the fastest finish of Wiratchai’s career.

Undefeated Japanese veteran Hayato Suzuki made a successful ONE Championship promotional debut, thwarting former title challenger Joshua Pacio of the Philippines to win by first round submission. After Pacio missed slightly on a spinning back kick attempt, Suzuki capitalized by taking his back and dragging the Filipino to the ground. Although Pacio valiantly fought off Suzuki’s submission attempts, it was only a matter of time before the bout-ending sequence played out. In the end, Suzuki notched his first victory in the ONE Championship cage via rear naked choke, forcing the younger Pacio to tap out.

In a heated featherweight showdown between two top contenders, Kotetsu “No Face” Boku of Japan posted a thrilling technical knockout victory over Eric “The Natural” Kelly of Baguio City, Philippines, utilizing his exceptional boxing skill. Although Kelly was able to score on a couple of knockdowns by way of a monstrous right hand, Boku was never fazed and kept putting the pressure on the Filipino stalwart. In the third round, Boku took Kelly’s back and pounded on his opponent to earn the finish.

Highly-touted Chinese prospect “Rock Man” Chen Lei notched his sixth-straight triumph in his young professional martial arts career by submitting Malaysian standout Saiful “The Vampire” Merican in the third round. Leaning on his superb grappling pedigree, Chen overwhelmed with his takedowns and sustained sturdy top control on the canvas. Chen got the job done by compelling Merican to wave the white flag with a wrenching armbar in the last round of their three-round bantamweight collision.

Jomary Torres of the Philippines overcame insurmountable odds to mark the first blemish in the professional record of Thai martial arts superstar Rika “Tinydoll” Ishige. Torres had to endure the initial onslaught from Ishige, who wasted no time in taking her Filipina opponent to the ground, nearly scoring a submission finish via armbar. In the second round, Torres pulled off a gutsy rally, wobbling Ishige with lashing right hands. After dropping Ishige with another quick right cross, Torres followed Ishige to the mat and fastened a rear-naked choke to force the tap.

Leandro “Brodinho” Issa of Brazil made a triumphant return to ONE Championship by stopping Finnish martial artist Toni “Dynamite” Tauru inside of two rounds. Carrying his dominant momentum from the first round to the second, Issa staggered the former world title challenger with a left hook-right straight combination and drove him to the mat with a high-impact slam. On the ground, Issa zapped Tauru with big blows to force seasoned referee Yuji Shimada to step in and call a halt to the contest.

Magomed Idrisov of Russia kept his unblemished professional record intact at the expense of Herbert “The Blaze” Burns of Brazil, defeating the ONE Championship veteran in his promotional debut. Idrisov made sure to leave a lasting impression in his first outing under the ONE Championship banner, connecting on crisp combinations in the stand-up trade, while denying all of Burns’ takedown attempts. In the end, Idrisov’s masterful performance proved enough to earn him the undivided nod from the three judges at cageside.

Marcin Prachnio of Poland continued his winning roll inside the ONE Championship cage as he thwarted Brazilian submission specialist Gilberto “Giba” Galvao via first-round knockout. Prachnio, who had to brush off a hard overhand left from Galvao in the opening moments of the first frame, was able to sneak in a clean left straight to the chin of his opponent. As Galvao dropped to the canvas, Prachnio capitalized on the opportunity and pummeled his counterpart with ground strikes to secure the victory.

A tactical three-round middleweight bout served as the curtain-raiser contest for ONE: KINGS & CONQUERORS as Leandro Ataides of Brazil collided with Polish combatant Michal Pasternak in a battle of former world title contenders. With both men seeking to vie for gold once more, Ataides and Pasternak employed efficient strategies from bell to bell. Ataides utilized his speed and power to connect on a handful of thudding strikes on Pasternak, who responded with solid hooks, defending well against takedown attempts. After going back-and-forth for three rounds, Ataides was declared the victor by way of unanimous decision.
