Tanim-Bala Returns? NAIA Officers FIRED After Passenger Exposes Bullet-Planting Scam!

In a decisive move to uphold integrity at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon announced on March 10, 2025, the termination of three Office for Transportation Security (OTS) personnel implicated in a recent "tanim-bala" (bullet-planting) incident.

The incident involved 69-year-old Ruth Adel, who was traveling to Vietnam with her family on March 6, 2025. While at the boarding gate of NAIA Terminal 3, OTS personnel approached Adel, alleging that an X-ray scan had detected a bullet casing—referred to as an "anting-anting" or amulet—in her handbag. Adel, unfamiliar with such items, requested an immediate inspection of her bag at the gate. However, the security officers insisted she accompany them elsewhere for the inspection. Pressed for time as boarding had commenced, Adel and her family refused to leave the gate area. Upon inspection, no bullet or casing was found in her belongings. The officers then withdrew, covering their name tags and prohibiting the family from recording the interaction.

This incident has raised concerns about the resurgence of the notorious "tanim-bala" scam, where airport security personnel allegedly plant bullets in passengers' luggage to extort money. The scheme gained infamy in the Philippines several years ago, leading to public outrage and calls for stringent measures to protect travelers.

In response to the recent incident, Secretary Dizon emphasized that such corrupt practices would not be tolerated under his administration. He assured the public that criminal charges would be filed against the dismissed personnel to serve as a deterrent to others. Dizon's swift action reflects the Department of Transportation's commitment to ensuring the safety and trust of passengers at the country's premier airport.

The public has expressed both concern and support regarding the incident and the subsequent actions taken. On social media platforms, many have lauded Secretary Dizon for his prompt response, hoping it signals a broader crackdown on corrupt practices within airport operations. Travelers are also advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to authorities to prevent similar incidents in the future.

As investigations continue, the Department of Transportation reiterates its dedication to implementing reforms that will enhance transparency and accountability within airport security protocols. These measures aim to restore confidence among local and international travelers, ensuring that NAIA remains a safe and welcoming gateway to the Philippines.
