Scorching Heat, Deadly Dengue, and a Volcanic Eruption: Is Your Child’s School Safe?

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

As the Philippines confronts a series of environmental challenges, the Department of Education (DepEd), under the leadership of Secretary Sonny Angara, is proactively implementing measures to safeguard the well-being of learners and educators. These initiatives address the escalating temperatures, the aftermath of Mt. Kanlaon's recent eruption, and a burgeoning dengue outbreak.

Mitigating the Impact of Extreme Heat

In response to soaring temperatures nationwide, DepEd has issued directives to ensure that educational activities proceed without compromising health and safety. Schools are encouraged to adjust class schedules to minimize exposure during peak heat periods. Suggested modifications include conducting morning sessions from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., implementing asynchronous learning between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., and holding afternoon sessions from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

To further alleviate heat-related concerns, schools are advised to enhance classroom ventilation by opening windows and installing additional fans. The provision of hydration stations and the distribution of insulated water containers are also being prioritized to ensure access to potable water. Moreover, outdoor activities during peak heat hours are to be limited, and health personnel are tasked with monitoring and managing cases of heat-related illnesses.

While there is no automatic suspension of classes due to extreme heat, local government units (LGUs) have the authority to declare class suspensions in affected areas. In such cases, schools are prepared to shift to alternative learning modalities to ensure the continuity of education.

Addressing the Aftermath of Mt. Kanlaon's Eruption

The recent eruption of Mt. Kanlaon has significantly impacted communities in the Western and Central Visayas regions. The eruption prompted the evacuation of approximately 87,000 residents, with ashfall affecting areas as far as Antique province.

Consequently, numerous schools have been closed, and a nighttime curfew has been imposed to ensure public safety.

DepEd reports that 11 schools are currently serving as evacuation centers, affecting 11,177 students and 441 personnel.

To address the disruption, these schools have adopted alternative delivery modalities, including the distribution of self-learning modules and the implementation of the Dynamic Learning Program. DepEd is closely coordinating with local authorities to monitor the situation and provide necessary support to the affected schools and communities.

Combating the Rising Dengue Cases

Amid these challenges, a dengue outbreak has emerged, affecting students and teachers across Luzon. DepEd has recorded 124 cases among learners in the National Capital Region, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, and the Cordillera Administrative Region. In response, schools have been directed to implement the Department of Health's 5S Strategy, which includes searching and destroying mosquito breeding sites, practicing self-protection measures, seeking early consultation for symptoms, supporting fogging only in outbreak situations, and sustaining hydration. Collaboration with LGUs and health agencies is being strengthened to monitor cases and enforce preventive measures effectively.

A Unified Approach to Ensuring Safety and Educational Continuity

DepEd's comprehensive approach to these overlapping challenges underscores its commitment to the safety and well-being of learners and educators. By adapting class schedules, enhancing health and safety protocols, and collaborating with local authorities, DepEd aims to ensure that education continues uninterrupted, even in the face of environmental adversities.
