Wazzup Pilipinas!?

The University of Cebu (UC) is making history by launching a major in Artificial Intelligence (AI) under its Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS) program, marking a significant leap forward in AI education in the Philippines.

Announced by UC Vice Chancellor for Business Development and Innovation, Ofelia Maña, on February 8, 2025, this groundbreaking program will be available across three UC campuses: UC Main, UC Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue (UCLM), and UC Banilad. With enrollment set to begin in May 2025, the program aims to equip students with advanced AI expertise, bridging the gap between academic learning and industry needs.

"This initiative is more than just an academic milestone for UC. It’s a direct response to the growing demand for AI professionals, not just in the Philippines but globally. We want to ensure our students are ready to take on the future, armed with the right skills and knowledge in AI,” said Ofelia Maña, UC Vice Chancellor for Business Development and Innovation.

A Transformative AI-Driven Curriculum

The BSCS-AI major is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in computer science, combined with specialized AI knowledge and skills. As AI rapidly reshapes industries—from healthcare and finance to automation and robotics—UC is ensuring that its graduates are not just learners but innovators in the AI revolution.

The program will cover key AI domains, including:

Machine Learning

Deep Learning

Natural Language Processing (NLP)

Computer Vision

Big Data Analytics

AI Ethics and Governance

“AI is transforming industries at an unprecedented rate. The need for professionals who understand AI’s ethical, technical, and business implications is greater than ever. UC’s new AI major is a step toward future-proofing the next generation of technology leaders,” said Dr. Manuel Herrera, an AI researcher and professor at UC.

"What excites me most is the opportunity to work on real AI projects that have real-world applications. This program isn’t just about theory—it’s about making an impact," shared John Reyes, a third-year Computer Science student at UC who plans to specialize in AI.

Cutting-Edge Facilities and Research Opportunities

To support the new AI major, UC is investing in state-of-the-art AI laboratories, high-performance computing facilities, and collaborative innovation hubs. These will provide students with hands-on experience in AI-driven automation, robotics, and augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies.

"We are creating an environment where students can experiment, build, and deploy AI models in a way that simulates real-world scenarios. This hands-on approach is what will set UC graduates apart from the rest," said Engr. Albert Chua, Head of UC’s AI Development Program.

Additionally, UC has partnered with leading tech companies to provide students with internships, mentorship opportunities, and access to AI-driven industry projects.

“Companies are actively looking for AI specialists who can think critically and solve real problems using AI. UC’s commitment to integrating AI into its curriculum will give its graduates a competitive edge in the job market,” said Liza Dela Cruz, a senior AI consultant and UC alumna working in the tech industry.

Bridging the AI Skills Gap in the Philippines

With AI playing an integral role in industries such as healthcare, finance, cybersecurity, and technology development, the demand for AI professionals is surging worldwide. UC’s new BSCS-AI major is poised to bridge the skills gap by equipping students with both technical expertise and practical experience.

Graduates of this program will have opportunities to work in high-demand roles such as:

AI Engineers

Data Scientists

Machine Learning Specialists

Robotics Developers

AI Ethics Consultants

“AI is the future, and we need more young professionals who can navigate this space responsibly. UC’s new program will not only educate students on AI’s potential but also teach them how to use it ethically,” said Dr. Raymond Tan, a global AI ethics advocate and technology leader.

A Call to Future AI Leaders

UC’s launch of the BSCS-AI major reaffirms its commitment to innovation, excellence, and digital transformation. Aspiring AI professionals are encouraged to seize this opportunity to be at the forefront of AI education in the Philippines.

"AI is the next frontier of technology, and UC is ensuring that its students are part of this revolution. If you want to be a leader in AI, this is the place to start," said Maria Gonzales, CEO of a leading AI startup in Cebu.

With the rapid rise of AI technologies shaping the future of work, UC’s BSCS-AI major is the perfect launchpad for students who want to thrive in the highly competitive world of AI and technology.

“We are not just educating students; we are building the next generation of AI pioneers who will shape the world,” concluded Ofelia Maña.

"Be part of this exciting journey and enroll in UC’s pioneering BSCS-AI program today!"
