Chiz Escudero’s VP Ambitions? David D’Angelo Warns Against ‘Impeachment Bargain’!

​In the midst of the political turbulence surrounding Vice President Sara Duterte's impeachment proceedings, Bunyog Pagkakaisa senatorial candidate David D'Angelo has issued a pointed admonition to Senate President Francis "Chiz" Escudero. D'Angelo cautioned Escudero against leveraging the Senate's role in the impeachment trial as a strategic maneuver to ascend to the vice presidency.​

During an interview with Radyo Pilipinas, D'Angelo expressed his concerns:​

"Once Vice President Sara is impeached, the position of the vice president will be vacant, and the President can appoint whoever he likes to be the vice president... I hope [Escudero] doesn't use this as a bargaining process to be named the next vice president." ​

In response to such speculations, Senate President Escudero has been unequivocal. He emphasized that, according to the Constitution, the President must nominate a replacement from either the Senate or the House of Representatives in the event of a vice-presidential vacancy. Escudero stated he has no interest in assuming the vice presidency and would decline the role if offered. ​

Escudero further clarified the constitutional process:​

"According to the Constitution, if the vice president is impeached, the president will choose a replacement from Congress. The Senate president does not automatically assume the position." ​

The impeachment trial of Vice President Duterte is slated to commence after the 20th Congress convenes in July 2025. Escudero has projected that the Senate, acting as an impeachment court, could conclude the trial and render a verdict by October 2025. ​

Amid these developments, Escudero has urged members of the House of Representatives who initiated the impeachment to demonstrate transparency and integrity. He called on them to make a public commitment, similar to his own, to dispel any suspicions of ulterior motives. ​

As the nation anticipates the forthcoming impeachment trial, the political landscape remains charged with debates over constitutional processes and the ethical responsibilities of public officials.
