Wazzup Pilipinas!?
In a groundbreaking initiative to enhance ocean literacy among Filipino students, the Department of Education (DepEd) has partnered with OceanX Education, Inc., a U.S.-based ocean exploration organization. This collaboration aims to provide immersive marine science learning experiences, fostering a deeper understanding of ocean conservation and research.
Strategic Partnership for Ocean Education
Formalized through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), DepEd and OceanX will explore opportunities centered on science expeditions utilizing the OceanXplorer research vessel, the world's most advanced research and media ship. These expeditions will be complemented by related film and media projects, enriching the educational content available to learners.
In-Port Activations and Hands-On Learning
As part of its 2025 science research expedition, OceanX will conduct in-port activations, offering students hands-on learning experiences and valuable insights into the work of marine scientists. These activities aim to inspire the next generation of ocean advocates by providing direct exposure to ocean conservation and research efforts.
Youth-Focused Programs
The partnership introduces two key programs designed to engage Filipino youth:
Young Explorers Program: Targeting learners aged 18-24, this program offers workshops, hands-on activities, and independent study to build foundational knowledge and skills in ocean science, marine operations, and digital media storytelling.
Early Career Explorers Program: Aimed at early-career professionals over 25 years old with less than five years of experience, this initiative enables participants to collaborate with peers and renowned faculty to deepen their understanding of ocean exploration and enhance their impact on ocean advocacy.

OceanXplorer: A Vessel of Innovation
The OceanXplorer is renowned for its state-of-the-art laboratories, submersibles, and virtual reality tools, transforming ocean research and conservation efforts. The vessel provides real-time scientific analysis, reducing the lag experienced with traditional research methods. Its design, inspired by "Star Trek" and developed with input from filmmaker James Cameron, aims to make ocean exploration educational and visually engaging.
DepEd's Commitment to Immersive Learning
Education Secretary Sonny Angara emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating that it aligns with DepEd's commitment to providing innovative and immersive learning opportunities for Filipino students. By integrating cutting-edge ocean exploration into the curriculum, DepEd aims to cultivate a generation of learners who are knowledgeable and passionate about marine science and conservation.
This collaboration between DepEd and OceanX marks a significant step toward enriching the educational landscape in the Philippines, offering students unparalleled opportunities to engage with the wonders of the ocean and the critical work of preserving it for future generations.
