Wazzup Pilipinas!?
In a bid to fortify educational partnerships and provide greater opportunities for Filipino learners, Education Secretary Sonny Angara recently hosted Malaysian Ambassador Dato’ Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino and his delegation. The high-level meeting underscored the shared commitment of the Philippines and Malaysia to advancing education, promoting regional cooperation, and empowering communities through targeted initiatives.
Key Highlights of the Meeting
Expanding Scholarship Opportunities for Filipinos
One of the focal points of the discussion was the potential establishment of Malaysian scholarship programs for Filipino students. These scholarships are envisioned to provide greater access to higher education, fostering knowledge exchange and supporting sustainable peace and economic growth across the region.
“Malaysia has long been a valued partner in education, and today we continue to build on our shared history to empower our learners and communities,” Secretary Angara remarked.
Advancing Islamic Education in the BARMM Region
Malaysia’s expertise in Islamic education took center stage, particularly in enhancing the Arabic Language and Islamic Values Education (ALIVE) program. This initiative aims to support learners in both public schools and private Madaris schools across the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
With the Philippines’ Madrasah Education Program already providing vital educational support, the potential collaboration with Malaysia offers a promising avenue to elevate its standards and outcomes.
Strengthening Workforce Development Through TVET
The meeting also revisited commitments made during the October 2024 bilateral discussions between President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Ahmad Zahid Bin Hamidi. Both nations affirmed their intent to enhance Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs, ensuring Filipino graduates are equipped with globally competitive skills.
TVET’s focus aligns with industry needs, including the burgeoning Halal sector, which presents significant opportunities for economic growth and job creation.
Renewing the Memorandum of Understanding on Education Cooperation
Secretary Angara expressed enthusiasm for revisiting the 2014 Memorandum of Understanding on Education Cooperation, which was renewed in 2019. The renewed agreement aims to address emerging priorities, particularly in regional collaboration and the integration of industry-focused initiatives.
“We will explore new opportunities that will benefit not only our learners but also the broader ASEAN community,” Angara emphasized.
Broader Implications for ASEAN Cooperation
This meeting reflects the growing importance of regional partnerships in education as a means to address shared challenges and capitalize on collective strengths. By leveraging Malaysia’s expertise and resources, the Philippines aims to boost its capacity in critical areas such as Islamic education, workforce development, and scholarship access.
The discussions also underscore the pivotal role of education in fostering unity and development within ASEAN. With Malaysia and the Philippines leading collaborative efforts, the region moves closer to its vision of an integrated and inclusive educational framework.
Looking Ahead
As Secretary Angara and Ambassador Castelino work to bring these initiatives to fruition, the education sector remains a cornerstone of Philippine-Malaysian relations. Through sustained dialogue and action, both countries aim to empower their citizens, drive economic growth, and strengthen the bonds of regional cooperation.
The Department of Education (DepEd) and its Malaysian counterparts will continue to explore avenues for collaboration, ensuring that these efforts translate into tangible benefits for learners and communities alike.
