Wazzup Pilipinas!?
Marilaque Highway, the picturesque stretch connecting Marikina, Rizal, Laguna, and Quezon, is known for its winding roads and breathtaking views. Unfortunately, it has also earned the grim nicknames "Killer Highway" and "Devil's Corner" due to the alarming frequency of accidents—many involving reckless motorcyclists.
The latest tragedy struck on January 26, 2025, when a reckless motorcycle stunt claimed the life of vlogger John Louie Arguelles, popularly known as Moto Push, and left his companion, Rico "Recs" Akmad, hospitalized and facing detention. The two riders attempted the dangerous "Superman" stunt—a reckless maneuver where the rider lies flat on the motorcycle while at high speed. The accident not only resulted in fatal consequences but also caused damage to parked vehicles and motorcycles that tumbled into a cliff.
This incident is a sobering reminder that Marilaque Highway is not a race track but a public road that demands caution and respect. It highlights the urgent need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and greater awareness among motorists to prioritize road safety.
Senate Action: Raffy Tulfo Leads the Charge
Recognizing the pressing issue, Senator Raffy Tulfo, Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Public Services, convened a hearing on January 27, 2025, to address the dangers on Marilaque Highway. In the hearing, Ariel Lim, President of the National Public Transport Coalition, shared that the highway has become a hotspot for motorcycle racers and stunt performers, especially on weekends. These activities not only endanger the riders but also innocent motorists passing through the area.
Senator Tulfo expressed deep concern over the recurring accidents and took decisive steps to address the problem:
Increased Police Visibility: The senator directed the Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) to enhance their presence along Marilaque Highway and establish outposts to monitor vehicular activity.
Coordination with Local Governments: Tulfo instructed the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to engage local government units (LGUs) with jurisdiction over the highway. LGUs are expected to collaborate with authorities to enforce regulations and ensure public safety.
Immediate Implementation: The PNP was given five working days to implement these measures and submit a written plan of action to Senator Tulfo’s office.
PNP Deputy Director for Operations PBGen. Reynaldo Pawid assured Tulfo that the police would intensify monitoring and deploy personnel to prevent future accidents. Likewise, Atty. Gino Lavarias of the DILG committed to escalating the matter to the department secretary to push for immediate action from LGUs.
A Highway of Dreams Turned Nightmare
Marilaque Highway, with its steep curves and scenic landscapes, has long been a favorite among motorcycle enthusiasts and road trippers. However, the reckless behavior of a few has turned this road into a death trap. The series of accidents underscores a culture of irresponsibility and a lack of regard for safety.
The allure of adrenaline and social media fame has driven many riders to engage in dangerous stunts, often documenting their exploits for likes and followers. But as this latest tragedy shows, the cost of these reckless acts is far greater than the fleeting thrill or virtual clout they seek.
Call for Responsibility and Safety Awareness
This devastating accident has sparked a renewed call for responsibility among motorists and stricter enforcement of road safety laws. The public is urged to recognize the dangers of reckless driving and the importance of adhering to traffic regulations. Marilaque is a public road, not a playground for stunts or illegal racing.
Likewise, advocacy for road safety must extend beyond enforcement. Educational campaigns targeting motorists, especially motorcycle riders, should emphasize the consequences of reckless driving. The Department of Transportation (DOTr), Land Transportation Office (LTO), and local communities must work together to foster a culture of safe and responsible road use.
Moving Forward: Ensuring Safety for All
As Senator Tulfo and authorities take swift action, the spotlight is now on law enforcement and local governments to deliver results. Concrete measures such as increased patrols, surveillance cameras, and strict penalties for violators must be implemented to reclaim Marilaque Highway as a safe thoroughfare.
The tragic loss of John Louie Arguelles and the hospitalization of Rico Akmad serve as painful lessons on the consequences of recklessness. It is now up to all stakeholders—riders, motorists, authorities, and communities—to work together to prevent further loss of life and make Marilaque Highway a safer road for everyone.
Let us honor the memory of those who lost their lives by promoting road safety and ensuring that Marilaque Highway is no longer synonymous with tragedy.
