The Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) starts 2025 with a groundbreaking event: the Control + Shift: Changing Narratives Festival. This extraordinary celebration of Filipino culture and storytelling takes place from February 6 to 23, 2025, at the PETA Theater Center in New Manila, Quezon City. Festival director J-mee Katanyag has meticulously curated a lineup of innovative performances that push the boundaries of theater, blending puppetry, movement, interactivity, and digital elements to reimagine Filipino folklore, values, and societal issues.
Main Theater Performances
“Kumprontasyon”
From February 6 to 9, this critically acclaimed trilogy by Melvin Lee explores unresolved historical and political themes through three one-act plays:
Lakambini by Allan Palileo, featuring Teroy Guzman and Sherry Lara.
The Impossible Dream by Guelan Luarca, starring Romnick Sarmenta and Ron Capinding.
A Color for Tomorrow by Joshua Lim So, with Missy Maramara, Adrienne Vergara, Gillian Vicencio, and Uzziel Delamide.
“Twin Bill”
On February 14 and 15, revisit two crowd favorites from the 2024 festival:
Kislap at Fuego by Dominique La Victoria, an enchanting love story set during the Philippine revolution.
Children of the Algo by Mixkaela Villalon, a poignant tale about the complexities of living in a technology-driven world.
“Control + Shift + SPIT: An Improvised Show”
On February 16, The Silly People’s Improv Theater (SPIT) delivers a one-night-only performance of pure hilarity, inspired by the festival’s theme and set.
Studio Theater Performances
From February 7 to 16, the Studio Theater will host a variety of thought-provoking pieces:
Set A | Unboxing: Felinda V. Bagas’ The Little Girl in a Box takes audiences on a journey of empowerment.
Set B | Time and Tide: Explore the resilience of Filipino families in Failed Puppeteer and Noche Buena.
Set C | Codes of Corruption: Delve into ethical dilemmas with Monit-oh! Monit-ah! by Herlyn Alegre and hUst1Sy@.exe by John Custer.
Set D | Breaking Free: Redefine narratives on gender, faith, and resilience with Ang Kuwento ni Babae, Taya! Sabay Yakap, and At Nagkatawang-Tao Ang Verbo.
