Wazzup Pilipinas!?
The Department of Education (DepEd) has unveiled a comprehensive strategy aimed at preparing Filipino learners for the dynamic demands of the global workforce. This initiative was highlighted during the Annual Educators’ Congress (AECON) 2025, held on Thursday in ParaƱaque City.
Adapting to a Changing Landscape
Undersecretary Peter Irving Corvera, representing Secretary Sonny Angara, emphasized the necessity of equipping students with skills to navigate a rapidly evolving job market. He likened this imperative to athletes mastering new techniques to stay competitive. "The game is changing for our learners. To remain competitive, we need to ensure their technology literacy, much like athletes mastering new skills," Usec. Corvera stated.
Addressing Global Employment Trends
Citing the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025, Corvera highlighted the dual impact of technological advancements on employment. While automation may displace approximately 92 million jobs globally, the report anticipates the creation of 170 million new roles in the next decade, particularly in sectors like artificial intelligence and technological innovation.
Strategic Initiatives for Future-Ready Education
In response to these challenges, DepEd is implementing several key initiatives:
Infrastructure Enhancement: The Department plans to construct 15,000 classrooms by 2027 through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP). Efforts are also underway to provide electricity and satellite internet access to underserved schools, ensuring equitable access to digital learning resources.
Teacher Development Programs: Collaborations with organizations such as Khan Academy and Frontlearners are underway to offer specialized training in English, Science, and Mathematics. These programs aim to equip educators with advanced tools to elevate learning standards.
Industry Partnerships: DepEd has partnered with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) to strengthen industry connections, enhance work-readiness courses, and facilitate the issuance of national certifications. This collaboration seeks to ensure that students acquire skills aligned with industry needs, enhancing their employability.
Collaborative Efforts for a Robust Education System
"The support of our partners and stakeholders demonstrates that collaboration leads to extraordinary victories," Corvera remarked, underscoring the importance of collective action in achieving educational goals.
