Wazzup Pilipinas!?
The theme for this year’s International Day of Education (IDE), “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation,” resonated deeply with the call for the responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) within the Philippine education system. The Department of Education (DepEd) celebrated the occasion at its Central Office, where it underscored its commitment to integrating AI and technology into classrooms, in alignment with the broader vision of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to harness the potential of Filipino learners.
DepEd, a key player in shaping the future of education, is leading efforts to ensure that AI is used as a tool for empowerment rather than as a replacement for human capabilities. "Let us champion the use of AI as a tool for empowerment, not replacement. Let us equip our youth with the wisdom to use it responsibly. Together, let us create a future where technology amplifies human potential rather than diminishes it," said Undersecretary and Chief of Staff Atty. Fatima Lipp Panontongan during the event.
A Commitment to Ethical AI Integration
The use of AI in education is a transformative step forward, but it is equally essential to address its ethical implications. DepEd's ongoing collaboration with various EdTech companies is a testament to this commitment. Notably, the partnership with Khan Academy through Khanmigo, an AI-powered educational assistant, was showcased as an example of the positive integration of AI tools in the learning process.
“We are heading in the right direction by embracing the power of EdTech to address common learning delivery challenges,” remarked Usec. Panontongan, reinforcing DepEd’s belief in the ability of AI to enhance education without replacing the vital human touch.
The implementation of AI is particularly crucial in the Philippines, where the need for accessible, effective education is paramount. AI tools can bridge gaps in learning delivery, offering personalized learning experiences for students, especially in remote areas where access to quality teachers and resources may be limited. With Khanmigo, for instance, Filipino students now have access to an intelligent assistant that can support them in their academic journey, providing instant answers, explanations, and guidance.
Fostering Global Partnerships
The International Day of Education also saw the participation of significant global partners, including UNESCO, SEAMEO INNOTECH, UNICEF Philippines, and UNESCO Jakarta. These organizations are pivotal in supporting initiatives that promote quality education worldwide, and their presence at the event highlighted the shared commitment to advancing education, particularly through technology.
The event also featured an exhibition showcasing various innovations in AI and education, with prominent industry players such as FELTA, CISTEM, STI, Samsung, UNILAB, and iAcademy displaying their educational technology solutions. These partners, alongside DepEd’s efforts, are central to creating an ecosystem where education is not just about rote learning but a dynamic, interactive experience enriched by AI and digital tools.
A Vision for the Future
Atty. Panontongan’s statement on nurturing future generations emphasized the collective responsibility to ensure that children—whether from Gen Z, Alpha, or even Beta—are equipped to thrive in an increasingly automated world. “It is our duty to ensure that the next generation is nurtured, informed, and inspired,” she remarked. The push for greater youth engagement in education aligns with the United Nations' sustainable development goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 4, which calls for inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.
A Step Toward Empowerment
With the integration of AI into the Philippine education system, DepEd is not only preparing students for the future of work but also empowering them to make ethical, informed decisions. The careful stewardship of AI, particularly in an educational context, will ensure that technology amplifies human creativity and intellect rather than diminishing them.
This year’s celebration of IDE is a timely reminder of the importance of advancing education with compassion and foresight. As the Philippines steps confidently into the future of AI-powered learning, the collective goal is clear: to preserve human agency, foster critical thinking, and promote lifelong learning.
The IDE 2025 celebration is a landmark event that signals the Philippines’ readiness to embrace the digital age, with the government, international organizations, and private partners working hand-in-hand to shape a brighter educational future for all.
