A Nation Divided: The Impeach Sara Movement Takes Center Stage

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

The Philippines is once again at a political crossroads as Vice President Sara Duterte faces intensified calls for impeachment. Accused of corruption, misuse of government funds, and betrayal of public trust, the Vice President has become the focal point of a rapidly growing movement calling for accountability. Organized by the Bunyog Party-list and supported by notable digital influencers and bloggers, including Wazzup Pilipinas, the Impeach Sara Movement has ignited public discourse on governance, transparency, and justice.

The Allegations: Corruption and Betrayal of Trust

In December 2024, two separate impeachment complaints were filed against Duterte, sparking controversy and widespread debate.

The first complaint, led by civil society organizations and families affected by the previous administration’s war on drugs, accuses the Vice President of corruption and gross misuse of public funds. Highlighting alleged irregularities, the complaint states that Duterte mishandled confidential funds allocated to the Office of the Vice President (OVP) and the Department of Education (DepEd), where she concurrently serves as Secretary.

The second complaint, filed by educators, former lawmakers, and activists, accuses Duterte of "betrayal of public trust." Central to this case is the alleged hasty liquidation of ₱125 million in confidential funds within just 11 days in late 2022. Questions also surround the use of ₱775 million in confidential funds intended for the OVP and DepEd, raising concerns about transparency and accountability.

Akbayan Representative Perci CendaƱa called the accusations a "gross abuse of power," stating, “Vice President Duterte must answer to the Filipino people for her plunder of public resources.”

Iglesia Ni Cristo and Nationwide Support for Duterte

Amid these allegations, the influential Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) has risen as a staunch defender of the Vice President. INC announced a series of nationwide rallies to protest the impeachment complaints, framing these as politically motivated attacks against Duterte’s leadership.

Through their media arm NET25, INC leaders emphasized their unwavering support for the Vice President. “We are ready to defend Vice President Sara Duterte against these baseless accusations,” an INC spokesperson declared.

INC’s actions mirror sentiments expressed by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., who dismissed the impeachment calls as irrelevant to the daily lives of Filipinos. Marcos stated, “This will not change a single Filipino life or improve the state of the nation.”

The Rise of the Impeach Sara Movement

Despite this opposition, the Impeach Sara Movement has gained momentum. Spearheaded by the Bunyog Party-list and supported by a coalition of activists, teachers, and digital content creators, the movement seeks to hold Duterte accountable for alleged abuses of power.

The group has scheduled a major rally on January 18, 2025, at the People Power Monument on EDSA, symbolizing the Filipino people’s enduring fight for democracy and accountability. Dubbed “The People’s Fight for Justice and Accountability,” the rally promises to amplify calls for transparency and proper governance.

Digital influencers, including the prominent Wazzup Pilipinas, have played a crucial role in mobilizing support and disseminating information about the movement. By leveraging online platforms, the campaign has expanded its reach, ensuring that public awareness continues to grow.

A Nation Divided

The controversy surrounding Vice President Duterte has revealed deep divisions in Philippine society. Supporters view her as a decisive leader, unfairly targeted by political rivals. Critics, however, see her as a symbol of unaccountability and excess, demanding her immediate removal from office.

This clash has turned the impeachment proceedings into a litmus test for the nation’s political maturity and commitment to democratic principles. With rallies planned by both supporters and detractors, the streets are becoming a battleground for the future of governance in the country.

What Lies Ahead

As investigations into the impeachment complaints continue, public pressure is mounting on both sides. The outcome of this political saga will likely shape the nation’s trajectory in the years to come, determining whether leaders are held accountable for their actions or shielded by powerful allies.

For now, all eyes are on January 18, when the Impeach Sara Movement will take to EDSA, invoking the spirit of People Power to demand justice and integrity in governance. Whatever the outcome, one thing is certain: the Filipino people are watching closely, ready to hold their leaders to account.

This is more than just a political battle—it is a fight for the soul of the nation.
