Alsons Power’s Sarangani Energy Corporation Wins Safety Excellence Award at DOLE’s 13th Gawad Kaligtasan at Kalusugan

Sarangani Energy Corporation (SEC), part of the Alsons Power Group, has been recognized for its outstanding commitment to workplace safety and health at the 13th Gawad Kaligtasan at Kalusugan (GKK). Selected from over 100 nominees, SEC’s recognition reflects its unwavering dedication to protecting its people, partners, and communities—fully embodying Alsons Power’s brand promise: “We Power with Care.”

DOLE XII Regional Director Joel Gonzales (far left) and OIC-Training and Public Information Division Chief Jose Soriano (far right) present the plaque and cash prize to Sarangani Energy's Assistant HR Manager Mary Shower Megrenio, recognizing the power plant's safety and emergency preparedness at the 13th Gawad Kaligtasan at Kalusugan (GKK) in General Santos City.

“This recognition is a testament to Alsons Power’s commitment to safety and sustainable operations. Our priority has always been to provide reliable and affordable power while ensuring the well-being of our people and communities,” said Jose Luis R. Angco, Alsons Power Vice President and Business Manager for Plant Operations.

As a 237-megawatt baseload plant, Sarangani Energy has built comprehensive safety measures into every aspect of its operations. These include risk assessments, emergency drills, and continuous training to keep employees and contractors well-prepared for any situation. SEC’s commitment extends beyond the plant, working closely with local government units and emergency responders to protect the broader community in Barangay Kamanga, Maasim, Sarangani Province.

This year marks the first time that Alsons Power’s Sarangani Energy participated in the GKK, and DOLE’s recognition reflects the company’s proactive approach to safeguarding lives and fostering a safe work environment. This achievement reinforces Alsons Power’s reputation as a responsible employer and sets a positive example for other companies and organizations in the region.

The GKK award is a result of a rigorous selection process that included interviews, on-site assessments, and thorough evaluations by experts from the DOLE, Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC), Employees Compensation Commission, Social Security System (SSS), and the Regional Tripartite Industrial Peace Council (RTIPC), ensuring that only the highest standards in occupational safety were recognized.

Think-tank: Typhoon-related coal barge disasters expose incompatibility of fossil fuels to PH

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

The Center for Energy, Ecology, and Development (CEED) on Monday called on the Philippine government to hasten the country’s transition away from fossil fuels and to strengthen measures to protect marine and coastal environments from pollution.

The call was made after the onslaught of Severe Tropical Storm (STS) Kristine triggered two coal spills in Sorsogon and Zambales.

“After hundreds of thousands of liters of oil spilled in the Verde Island Passage last year and in Manila Bay earlier this year, we’re now seeing these disastrous coal barge accidents. All of them came about from severe weather events. They are a terrible yet stark reminder that fossil fuel projects are dirty, deadly, and costly in more ways than one - triggering worse climate disasters and directly polluting the environments and communities that host them,” said Gerry Arances, Executive Director of CEED.

The coal barge that overturned in Sorsogon during the onslaught of STS Kristine has reportedly resulted in significant environmental damage, including fish kills and the destruction of marine ecosystems and livelihoods. A coastal community in Brgy. Bucalbucalan in Sorsogon City raised alarm over the darkening of the coast due to the alleged soaking of the barge’s coal.

Meanwhile, local fisherfolks of Zambales feared that marine life and their livelihoods were endangered because of the grounded barge case also by STS Kristine. Carrying 11,000 metric tons of coal, the barge poses serious threats to the Masinloc-Oyon Bay Protected Seascape and Landscape, Central Luzon’s first marine protected area and regarded as one of the country’s most important locations for marine biodiversity.

“Coal and other fossil fuels are not only a major contributor to climate change, they also pose significant threats to our communities and environment. As the climate crisis worsens, a repeat of these tragic incidents will always be possible for the climate-vulnerable Philippines. It’s high time for the government to rethink its expansion plans for coal and all other fossil fuels and prioritize a swift and just transition to renewable energy instead,” said Arances.

“At the same time, the government must prioritize the implementation of more stringent protection for the ecosystems that sustain many Filipinos, yet continue to be threatened by fossil fuels and other risks. Increasing restrictions against toxic pollution and ensuring that fisherfolk and coastal communities are empowered to be at the forefront of managing and protecting their marine and coastal environments should be the way forward,” he added.

DepEd Rolls Out Innovative Solution to Combat Learning Loss

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

The Department of Education (DepEd) will deploy the Dynamic Learning Program (DLP) to support education continuity in schools impacted by typhoons and other natural disasters.

The pilot implementation of DLP will begin this November in affected schools in Regions I, II, III, IV-A, V, and CAR. The DLP initiative is designed to address disruptions caused by disasters and other challenges by promoting independent, resource-efficient learning.

“We’re bringing resilience to the heart of learning so that no student’s education has to pause when challenges arise,” Education Secretary Sonny Angara said.

Under the DLP, affected schools have the flexibility to conduct make-up classes and utilize DLP learning activity sheets in temporary learning spaces. These activity sheets are designed to be simple, targeted, and adaptable.

The program’s features include: parallel classes, activity-based engagement, student portfolios, and a reduced homework policy. The program encourages learners to engage deeply with lessons and build essential skills like writing, problem-solving, and critical thinking.

Through this initiative, DepEd seeks to restore educational opportunities for students by establishing resilient, adaptable learning practices. The deployment of DLP is aligned to the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. as a proactive learning continuity measure during disaster and emergency contexts.

DLP was developed by Dr. Christopher Bernido and Dr. Ma. Victoria Carpio-Bernido, founders of the Central Visayan Institute Foundation (CVIF) in Jagna, Bohol. It aims to improve learning outcomes through independent learning and minimal resource dependence, making it particularly effective in resource-limited environments.

Ocean Experts and Advocates Prepare for 8th East Asian Seas Congress in Xiamen

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

The EAST ASIAN SEAS (EAS) CONGRESS is one of the most important gatherings for the seas of East and Southeast Asia. Here, minsters agree on a shared plan to conserve and sustainably develop the shared coastal resources of the region.

The East Asian Congress is happening this week, from 6 to 8 November, at the Xiamen International Convention Center in Xiamen, Fujian Province, China. Over 800 delegates from 20 countries are expected to attend.

Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA) is staging the 8th East Asian Seas Congress (EASC) from 6 to 8 November 2024 in Xiamen, the People’s Republic of China.

Co-organized with the Ministry of Natural Resources of China and the Xiamen Municipal People’s Government, it is the 8th EASC since country and non-country partners, local governments, the academe, private sector, international development partners, youth, nongovernment organizations, grassroots organizations and coastal communities agreed to work together to foster healthy seas, people and economies in the East Asian Seas region.

Held every three years, EASC provides a platform for ministerial and high-level technical discussions along with opportunities for networking and knowledge exchange on best practices, new research findings, innovative solutions and future trends in various sectors affecting East Asian Seas.

“The theme of the congress is Blue Synergy for a Shared Future: One Sustainable and Resilient Ocean and calls on participants to forge deeper, lasting ties and stronger collective impacts,” explains PEMSEA Executive Director Aimee Gonzales. “This congress is particularly important because it will be held in one of our two original pilot sites.”

In 1993, the Prevention and Management of Marine Pollution in the East Asian Sea (MPP-EAS) introduced Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) practices in the Philippine province of Batangas, plus the Chinese coastal hub of Xiamen – helping foster institutional reforms that greatly reduced multiple-use conflicts, pollution and the occurrence of deadly red tide, while protecting endangered species and habitats and providing nature-based amenities to locals and visitors alike.

The MPP-EAS project would later grow to become PEMSEA. Xiamen in turn evolved into a bustling trade and ecotourism hub known as the ‘Garden of the Sea’ – attracting droves of domestic and international tourists yearly because of its green destinations, such as the Xiatanwei Mangrove Park and Wuyuan Bay, home to rare White Dolphins (Sousa chinensis) and Blue-tailed Bee-eaters (Merops philippinus), considered the most beautiful bird in China.

To be held at the Xiamen International Conference Center, EASC 2024 will be staged together with World Ocean Week in Xiamen (WOW), which originated from the Xiamen International Maritime City Forum in 2005. WOW is an annual event that has hosted nearly 1000 officials and experts, over 50 important international organizations and over two million participants from nearly 130 countries and regions since its inception. Around 80,000 people attend WOW yearly.

“The successful integration of these two significant events is expected to draw increased attention and participation from high-level international organizations, officials, scholars and experts,” says the WOW official. “This will not only enhance the focus on building blue partnerships with East Asian Seas countries, but also aim to achieve a synergistic effect where one plus one is greater than two.”

Organizers hope the powerful synergy of EASC and WOW will revitalize ocean management across East Asian Seas. Numerous high-level speakers and guests are expected to attend the three-day event.

Impressive Speakers’ Lineup

The EASC consists of a Ministerial Forum, International Conference, Environmental Exhibition, Youth Forum, General Assemblies of Local Governments and Learning Centers, plus Field Visits to learn about ICM and other relevant coastal management practices.

Delegates can attend around 30 sessions anchored on four subthemes: Ocean Science, Policy and Practice, Global Challenges, Local Solutions, Innovation and Digitizing Ocean Action, plus Blue Financing and Investments.

Ministers, Vice Ministers, Director Generals, plus other senior government officials from 10 PEMSEA partner countries are expected to attend. Confirmed speakers include Dr. Kanni Wignaraja (UN Assistant Secretary-General and UNDP Regional Director for Asia), Mr. Mahesh Pradhan (COBSEA Coordinator under UNEP), Ms. Minna Epps (IUCN Ocean Team Director), Ms. Aya Silva (Rare Philippines / Fish Forever Vice President), Professor Icarus Allen (Plymouth Marine Laboratory Chief Executive), Dr. Minhan Dai (Xiamen University Chair and Professor of Marine Biogeochemistry) and many others.

Senior Chinese officials are warmly welcoming delegates. “EASC greatly strengthens solidarity and cooperation among our respective countries,” says China’s Minister of Natural Resources Wang Guanghua. “The congress also promotes the implementation of the Sustainable Development Strategy for the Seas of East Asia (SDS-SEA). We are delighted to host our local and foreign participants.”

With over 800 delegates from 20 countries expected to attend, EASC 2024 aims to strive for bold and progressive achievements in international marine cooperation, comprehensive coastal zone management, marine cultural exchanges and other relevant fields.

“The 8th EASC is a powerful celebration of ocean solutions,” concludes EAS Partnership Council Chair Dr. Vann Monyneath. We envision healthy, vibrant and productive seas for all countries in East Asia and beyond. We’re excited to share and learn from everyone in Xiamen.”

How to Choose the Right Motivational Speaker in the Philippines

In the ever-changing world of business, education, and personal growth, a great motivational speaker can really inspire, energize, and guide an audience toward a new path of motivation. There are many talented motivational speakers in the Philippines; however, picking the right one can be a crucial decision. The ideal speaker will connect with your audience and ignite the kind of motivation that leads to transformation. Here’s how you can choose the best motivational speaker for your upcoming event: First, it’s important to define the purpose and goals of your event (this is the first and most important step in selecting the right speaker). Think about whether the event is meant to motivate employees for better performance, foster personal growth, inspire students, or encourage leadership skills. Each goal requires a different approach; however, aligning these goals with the speaker’s strengths is essential. For instance, some motivational speakers in the Philippines focus on areas like business growth, sales motivation, personal development, or leadership. Knowing what your audience needs and expects will help you find a speaker with the right expertise to make a significant impact.

It might feel a little overwhelming at first; however, you can get through this process with careful thought. Look for relevant experience and background: after you figure out your event's goals, you should look for a motivational speaker who has the right experience. The best motivational speakers in the Philippines often have strong backgrounds in their fields—whether it’s business, sports, education, or community service. This is important (because) a speaker who has faced challenges similar to what your audience deals with can connect on a deeper level. They can relate to the struggles and triumphs from their own experiences. For example, if you want a motivational speaker to inspire a team to overcome obstacles, you might think about someone with a story of resilience or transformation. A speaker who shares personal stories and real-life lessons tends to be more relatable and impactful. But you should also consider the audience's preferences, because this can affect how well the message is received. Although experience is important, the ability to engage the audience is key too.

Researching (a speaker's) style and how they connect with the audience is very important: motivational speakers are known for their energetic presentation styles. However, it’s essential to find the right match for your audience. Some speakers use humor (which can lighten the atmosphere), but others focus on powerful storytelling or hands-on activities. Each style can resonate differently, depending on who is listening. Although it might seem like a small detail, the speaking style can greatly affect how well the message is understood. To get a feel for a speaker's style, you should (watch) videos of their past talks or attend one of their events if you can. Pay attention to how they engage with the audience, use body language, and adjust their message to fit the situation. Engaging speakers often keep the audience interested, leaving a lasting impression. This encourages attendees to apply what they’ve learned. However, it’s important to notice the details, because every speaker has their unique way of doing things. Although some may have similar styles, the true difference usually comes down to how they deliver their message.

 Read Reviews and Testimonials

In today’s digital world, reviews and testimonials (which are important) give us valuable insights into a speaker’s ability to motivate and engage audiences. It’s smart to seek feedback from clients in the Philippines who have hired motivational speakers for similar events. Positive reviews often highlight a speaker’s impact on attendees; however, detailed testimonials can show their skill in connecting with specific audiences. You can also ask for recommendations from colleagues or professional networks that might have had experience working with motivational speakers in the Philippines. If the speaker is well-received by audiences like yours, they are probably a good fit. Because of this, it’s essential to consider all feedback when making your choice. Although it can be tempting to rely on just a few opinions, gathering various perspectives can help ensure you make the best decision.

Consider Cultural Relevance and Language

Choosing a motivational speaker who understands Filipino culture, values and the little language details can greatly improve their connection with the audience. A speaker who genuinely connects with Filipino culture can share stories that people relate to, tell funny jokes, and make respectful references. This increases the overall impact of the speech. For instance, a motivational speaker in the Philippines might mention popular Filipino values like Bayanihan (which means community spirit) or pagmamalasakit (which translates to compassion). However, these cultural references can help create a stronger bond between the speaker and the audience (making the experience both memorable and inspiring). Although having solid content is important, this connection is essential for crafting a meaningful experience.

 Check Availability and Budget

Motivational speakers' fees in the Philippines can vary a lot (1) based on their experience, demand and expertise. Before contacting a speaker, it’s important to figure out your budget and see if their rates fit. Some speakers might offer virtual options, which can be more affordable and flexible; this is great if your event doesn’t necessarily require someone there in person. However, you should also check the speaker's availability, because many popular motivational speakers often have their schedules booked well in advance. Booking early is a smart move (especially for speakers who are in high demand or during busy event seasons).

Schedule a Preliminary Meeting or Call

After you create a shortlist of possible motivational speakers, it’s super important to set up a preliminary meeting (or maybe just a call) to discuss your event in greater detail. This conversation gives you a chance to see how enthusiastic, adaptable, and knowledgeable they are about your goals. A great speaker will not only listen to your objectives, but they will also offer insights and explain how they can adjust their message to match your theme. This step helps judge their flexibility and willingness to customize their presentation. The more adaptable they are, the better they can connect their message with your audience's unique interests and challenges. However, keep in mind that not all speakers will be equally effective at this. Although some may excel in certain areas, others might struggle. Because of this, it’s crucial to evaluate each speaker carefully (and this can make a big difference).

Conclusion

Choosing the right motivational speaker in the Philippines (this is very important) means understanding what your event is really about. You need to match the speaker's skills and background with your goals. However, it’s also essential to consider cultural relevance. With careful thought and a clear understanding of your audience’s needs, you can find a speaker who will truly inspire them. (This is key!) A well-chosen motivational speaker can greatly enhance your event. It can change a regular gathering into an unforgettable experience, making it valuable for attendees and beneficial for your organization. Although the selection process may seem tough, it is crucial for success, because the right speaker can motivate your audience to take meaningful action.

Ateneo student builds chemical purity tester from LEGO

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Using simple circuitry, polarizing film, and LEGO® toy bricks, an undergraduate physics student from the Ateneo de Manila University recently built an improvised polarimeter that can optically assess the purity of Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and other chiral substances. The device has potential applications in classrooms as a learning tool, and may pave the way for more cost-effective means to monitor the quality of some consumer products.

The Ateneo de Manila University Department of Physics’ Photonics Laboratory’s polarimeter setup, built mostly out of LEGO® toy bricks, polarizing film, and cheap off-the-shelf electrical components. SOURCE: Felicidario and delos Santos.

Polarimeters are invaluable laboratory instruments that can help infer the purity of a chemical by measuring the angle of rotation of polarized light that passed through the test sample. However, laboratory-grade polarimeters are prohibitively expensive, with a high-end model costing over $11,500 and a commercial manual polarimeter priced at over $1,200. This makes their acquisition and use difficult if not impossible for small laboratories and classrooms in developing countries like the Philippines.

That may change thanks to the work of people like undergraduate physics student Ryan Joseph Felicidario and his thesis adviser, Dr. Ramon delos Santos, of the Ateneo de Manila University Department of Physics’ Photonics Laboratory. Their work improved on an earlier LEGO®-based polarimeter built by Norwegian researchers Lise Kvittingen and Birte Johanne Sjursnes. The Filipino researchers modified the original design and refined the detection process to obtain reliable and accurate measurements that are crucial for ascorbic acid, whose specific rotation is relatively low.

Built at a small fraction of the price of a commercial polarimeter, the Ateneo de Manila University Department of Physics’ Photonics Laboratory’s setup features improved reliability and accuracy over the original design. SOURCE: Felicidario and delos Santos

By using easily-purchased items like LEGO® bricks, polarizing film, and cheap off-the-shelf electrical components, Felicidario was able to bring the cost of the polarimeter down to just over $150. To test the device, he used two over-the-counter samples of Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) from two different pharmaceutical brands and compared the test results with known theoretical values for pure ascorbic acid. While one of the samples produced values within the acceptable range, the other sample “showed significant deviations from the expected (values), suggesting possible impurities affecting its optical properties.”

“(The) comprehensive approach combining polarimetry and melting point determination proved to be cost-effective compared to other devices typically used for purity assessment, which are often more expensive,” Felicidario and delos Santos said in their paper, “Measurement of ascorbic acid samples' optical rotation via an improvised polarimeter for purity assessment”, which was published in the Journal of Physics: Conference Series on October 23, 2024.

“Furthermore, the findings demonstrated that the polarimeter is not only effective in practical applications, but it also offers educational benefits. Its non-black-box nature facilitates a straightforward demonstration of optical activity and polarization concepts,” the paper concluded.

Fourth Class City Lauded for Impressive Learners' Performance

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

The Department of Education (DepEd), the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EdCom2) and UNICEF have recognized the Schools Division Office (SDO) of Gapan City for its effective resource management and impressive student achievement, positioning it as a model for public school financing across the Philippines.

A field visit led by Education Secretary Sonny Angara and EdCom2 Co-Chair Senator Sherwin Gatchalian provided insights on Gapan’s strategies. Strong parental and LGU support enabled the learners to earn a 95% score in the Comprehensive Rapid Literacy Assessment (CRLA) and above-average scores in the National Achievement Tests (NAT6 and NAT10).

Secretary Angara urged the SDO Gapan staff to share their best practices across other divisions, which also highlighted the city's resourcefulness in managing limited Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (MOOE).

“What is clear is that the schools and students who perform best are those who are supported not only within the schools, but also at home and by the community and the local governments,” Secretary Angara said.

"Spread the word of how you did it," Angara encouraged, underscoring the potential for replication in other areas.

Gapan East Elementary School and Kapalangan National High School were recognized by UNICEF as Top Performing Schools, exemplifying how effective MOOE and Special Education Fund (SEF) usage can yield exceptional results.

EdCom2 Director Karol Mark Yee noted that the field visit aimed to understand the financial strategies that supported these schools' high performance and could serve as a model for schools of varying sizes.

With insights gathered, UNICEF Deputy Representative Behzad Noubary and Gapan City Mayor Joy Pascual expressed optimism about Gapan's sustainable model for addressing immediate funding challenges while advancing long-term educational goals.
