DepEd, DOH launch Bakuna Eskwela to revive School-Based Immunization against preventable diseases

The Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Health (DOH) launched the revival of the School-Based Immunization (SBI) program, dubbed as Bakuna Eskwela, to protect students from life-threatening vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs).

Education Secretary Sonny Angara and Health Secretary Ted Herbosa led the kickoff event of Bakuna Eskwela on Monday at the Dr. A Albert Elementary School in Manila.

The Bakuna Eskwela campaign will be rolled out in selected public schools across various provinces this October to November 2024, after a four-year suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Focusing on measles, rubella, tetanus, diphtheria, and human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccinations, the effort marks a significant shift as the program moves back from community-based immunizations to its original school-based setup, following the resumption of in-person classes.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara thanked President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for his support to the school-based vaccination program.

“Thank you to the President [Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.] for his support for this program at nabanggit nga ni Sec. Ted Herbosa ‘yong HPV virus, mga magulang, ang ginagastos diyan Php4,000 at nagdesisyon para maging libre ‘yan sa pangungumbinse ni Sec. Ted Herbosa kay no less than our President," Sec. Angara said.

With a total budget allocation of PhP 853 million, Bakuna Eskwela aims to immunize at least 3.8 million public school students enrolled in Grades 1 and 7 with MR and Td vaccines, and another 973,930 female Grade 4 students in selected public schools for the HPV vaccine that protects against cervical cancer.

"Sa bakuna, we can ensure our learners stay in school and don’t miss valuable learning opportunities. As EDCOM’s studies show, some schools lost as much as 53 days of instruction in a single school year due to various health-related issues,” Sec. Angara noted.

"Education is a shared responsibility. Lahat tayo ay may responsibilidad sa ating mga kabataan, the National Government, the Local Government Units, schools, must come together to realize this initiative’s potentials. We must protect our children today to ensure our country’s healthy and bright future. Sa Bagong Pilipinas, walang maiiwan na bata, malusog, magaling, matalino,” Sec. Angara added.

The School-Based Immunization program, which began in 2015, had been successful in reducing outbreaks of VPDs among schoolchildren. However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic forced a temporary suspension and led to a worrying decline in vaccination rates.



"Our goal is to create a safe environment and ensure health and well-being of every Filipino child. Ngayong Oktubre at Nobyembre, we will unite and campaign together with the Department of Education to save our children from these Vaccine Preventable Diseases,” Sec. Herbosa said.

A Celebration of Community and Creativity at Canon PhotoMarathon 2024

  

The event attracted over 500 participants from all walks of life.

Canon Singapore Pte. Ltd. (Canon Singapore) announced the successful return of its iconic Canon PhotoMarathon as it welcomed over 500 photography enthusiasts at the event, held at Fountain Square @ Clarke Quay.

This year’s theme, “Every Lens, Every Age”, celebrated the diversity and creativity of the participants who captured Singapore’s beauty with their own unique perspectives. With two-hour submission windows assigned to each theme, the competition offered a dynamic and challenging experience, pushing photographers to think on their feet and produce one-of-a-kind visual stories. The three themes under both Open and Student Categories were Harmony, Clarity, and Wonder/Wander.

“It is exciting to see Canon PhotoMarathon back in action, and the creativity on display today is truly remarkable. We hope that this experience has given the participants memories that will last a lifetime. Empowering Photographers with Equal Opportunities

Canon proudly continues its long-standing partnership with APSN, a social service agency dedicated to providing special education, vocational training, and employment support for individuals with mild intellectual disabilities, at this year’s Canon PhotoMarathon 2024. In an exciting first, APSN beneficiaries participated in the student category, showcasing their eagerness to test and refine their photography skills. For Theme 1, ‘Harmony’, APSN Katong School student Zul Nuriman emerged as the winner of the second prize.

Since 2006, Canon has collaborated with APSN to foster equal opportunities for aspiring photographers. This partnership has included the provision of camera and lens equipment, the organisation of photo outings with staff volunteers, and photography workshops designed to boost confidence and spark creativity among APSN students. The UK Mission to ASEAN and the British Council are thrilled to announce the launch of the unique ASEAN-UK Advancing Creative Economy initiative, aimed at bolstering creative economies across the ASEAN region through collaboration with the UK. The programme started with a policymakers’ roundtable in Jakarta earlier this year, bringing together for the first time thought leaders from the UK and representatives from each of the ASEAN member states. The ASEAN-UK Advancing Creative Economy initiative represents a significant step forward in strengthening the creative industries across ASEAN countries.

Through delegations to the UK for ASEAN festival managers and policy development roundtables, this strand aims to facilitate meaningful exchanges and collaborations between the two regions.

• Research into the ASEAN Arts Sector

This includes initiatives such as a regional perception poll, mapping of the arts and creative technology landscape in ASEAN, and mapping of ASEAN festivals, providing valuable insights for future collaborations and initiatives.

The ASEAN-UK Advancing Creative Economy initiative also delivers on ASEAN’s Connectivity agenda, with people-to-people connectivity one of the priorities under the ASEAN Master Plan on Connectivity. Companies, Stop Aiming for a Complaint-free Record

 

Your customers' complaints could be the goldmine you’re overlooking.

“We want zero complaints,” says every company in the world. But what if complaints are the secret competitive advantage your business needs?

"Complaints offer an intimate way of understanding your business through the eyes of your customers," Dr. Janelle Barlow, President of All Out Performance and author of A Complaint is a Gift, said during her talk, Turning Critics into Advocates hosted by Management Strategies on September 23, 2024, at Discovery Primea, Makati. The event explored a radical idea: complaints can be your greatest source of insight and revenue, if only companies dared to listen.

And listen they did. Senior management who attended the event came from private foundations, telecommunications, finance, real estate and hospitality industries.

Silence is worse

If complaints aren’t bad news for companies, why don’t more customers speak up?

Many don’t think anything will get done, or the situation could worsen further. Dr. Barlow shared an anecdote about people being afraid to complain to their doctors, worrying that voicing their concerns might lead to worse treatment.

The same logic applies in business: silence from customers can be far more dangerous than complaints. These are the customers who simply walk away–the 50% you’ll never see again.

But, here's the twist: 60-70% of customers who have their complaints resolved satisfactorily go on to buy five times more than they initially would have.

"If you solve their concerns instead of over-apologizing, they’ll actually come back to repurchase five times more,” Dr. Barlow said. “This is the power of complaint handling in the language of revenue and results.”

Everyone owns the complaint

Only 1 in 10,000 written complaints ever make their way to senior management. In the US, companies are losing 1 trillion dollars due to poor complaint handling.  

Dr. Barlow emphasized the need to break down silos. Businesses must instead foster a culture where everyone feels responsible for addressing customer concerns.  

Too often, companies are laser-focused on acquiring new customers, missing the retention goldmine. 

Retaining existing customers is significantly cheaper than attracting new ones. And the rewards are exponential. A small increase in retention can lead to a dramatic uptick in profits.

“Most companies spend half of their revenue attracting new customers,” Dr. Barlow revealed. “But retaining even just 5% of your customers can lead to up to 95% profit increase.”

Turning critics into advocates

So what can businesses do in face of complaints? Dr. Barlow suggests three power tools that will turn even the worst critics into staunch advocates.

First, widen your customers’ tolerance zone. “When customers feel understood and valued, they are far more forgiving,” Dr. Barlow explained. A little friendliness and empathy go a long way in easing tensions and getting customers on your side. Instead of reacting defensively, aim to create an environment where your customers feel heard. 

Next, speed. “Above all, what customers want from service is responsiveness,” Dr. Barlow emphasized. Quick resolutions show that you value their time and concerns. When you act swiftly, you not only diffuse anger but also demonstrate your company’s commitment to resolving problems. 

Big data can speed up resolution. “Access to every data point can address the root cause of customer complaints and understand them beyond face value.”

Finally, fairness is more important than you realize. Customers aren’t just looking for their problem to be solved—they want it handled fairly. When your solution feels balanced and just, customers are more likely to leave with a positive impression, even if things didn’t start off smoothly. 

Behind every complaint is a gift. The question is: Are you ready to unwrap it?

How come the Environment is not included among the choices of most important issues in the Philippines? Are we all going to let it be relegated only as among the Others? 

The Philippines is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world. Located along the Pacific ring of fire, the Philippines is highly susceptible to seismic and volcanic risks. The country is also subject to the world record of typhoons every year. Climate change and pandemics are exacerbating those risks. A greener environment will solve the other issues like Health and Disaster Preparedness. Protecting the environment will obviously lead to better Health conditions for the population. Our healthcare system is in dire need of resuscitation. In accordance with the World Health Organization's guidelines, the air quality in the Philippines is considered moderately unsafe. A greener environment will ultimately solve the most important environmental issues facing the world today including pollution, global warming, ozone depletion, acid rain, depletion of natural resources, overpopulation, waste disposal, deforestation, and loss of biodiversity. 

Makati, Pasig, and Quezon City were identified as the top 3 cities with the most air pollution in NCR, and the Philippines is the third-ranking contributor to plastic pollution in the world, with at least 2.7 million metric tons of plastic waste generated every year. Water and air pollution levels exceed generally accepted health standards; and greenhouse gas emissions are increasing from rapid urbanization. Coal plant emissions are estimated to cause up to 2,400 deaths per year in the Philippines due to various diseases. 

A better environment will give us clean air, water, food, materials and space for recreation. Having plenty of these resources equates more to better health for all of us. Spending time in nature is also great for our mental health. And if we do not take care of the planet, its climate and ecosystems, we undermine how our societies function, worsen our lives and, perhaps most directly, harm our own well-being, thus making us unhealthy or more prone to illness. 

Our forests, rivers, oceans and soils provide us with the food we eat, the air we breathe, the water we irrigate our crops with. We also rely on them for numerous other goods and services we depend on for our health, happiness and prosperity. The natural environment gives us a wealth of services that are difficult to measure. Natural areas help clean our air, purify our water, produce food and medicines, reduce chemical and noise pollution, slow floodwaters, and cool our streets. We call this work 'ecosystem services'. Forests, wetlands, and other ecosystems act as buffers against extreme weather, protecting houses, crops, water supplies and vital infrastructure. 

Why must we contend with the destabilizing effects of natural disasters? To mitigate disasters and have less need for Disaster Preparedness, a better environment enveloping us will definitely reduce, if not totally diminish, flooding, climate crisis, and other related natural anomalies. 

The Philippines is most at risk of geophysical hazards such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanoes, as well as climatological hazards such as typhoons and drought. We should be increasingly alarmed by the issue of deforestation. It is one of the major environmental problems we are facing today. Aside from deforestation, also among the excessive climate risk and environmental issues looming over the Philippines are plastic pollution, the sea level rise, and the damage to coastal areas and marine life and the rising temperatures threatening the health, livelihoods and quality of life of Filipinos. Poverty leads to deforestation through inappropriate use of wood and other resources for cooking, heating, housing and crafts, thus depriving vulnerable groups from essential goods and accelerating both the downwards spiral of poverty and environmental degradation. Pollution, caused by human activity such as industrialization and urbanization, would continue to damage the environment and human health. Air and water pollution would lead to respiratory and heart disease, and toxic chemicals would contaminate soil and water, making them unfit for human consumption. 

With the industrialization of society and the increase in global trade, there has been a lot more pollution and waste produced. Since the Industrial Revolution, the burning of fossil fuels and other activities have increased the number of greenhouse gas emissions in Earth's atmosphere, leading to an increase in global warming. The resulting climate change has accelerated disruption of the environment and vital natural processes. Although climate change can also occur from natural causes, human behavior has led to an increase in greenhouse emissions. 

We are all still exposed and witness to increasing smoke pollution from cars and manufacturing industries, improper waste disposal from slums and companies clogging drainages, canals and rivers, illegal mining polluting the surroundings lands and rivers, illegal logging causing deforestation and severe flooding. Increased emissions of greenhouse gases have led to a rapid and steady increase in global temperatures, which in turn is causing catastrophic events all over the world. The Philippines suffers major human-caused environmental degradation aggravated by a high annual population growth rate, including loss of agricultural lands,deforestation,soil erosion, air and water pollution, improper disposal of solid and toxic wastes, loss of coral reefs, mismanagement and abuse of coastal resources and overfishing. 

The present state of the Philippine environment is a continuation of decades of downtrend. Unsustainable practices and indiscriminate natural resource extraction caused the massive degradation of our environment from the upland up to the coastal and marine ecosystems. 

Protecting the environment is everyone's responsibility. The environment includes the elements of sunlight, water, air, and soil, all of which are essential for human survival. It ensures the continuation of life by maintaining genetic variation and biodiversity. Protecting the environment plays a vital role in keeping living things healthy. We should maintain the ecological balance that will keep check of life on earth to continue providing enough food, shelter, air, and fulfill all the basic human needs whether big or small. We should prioritize environmental health, protecting the ecosystem vitality, and mitigating climate change. 

We know our planet cannot continue on its current trajectory and everyone has a responsibility to minimize their environmental impact; and in the case of organisations, work towards net zero. 

So why is the environment not a priority issue? A study found that favorable economic contexts, such as a relatively high income level and low inflation, foster environmental concern. This is likely related to the idea of a "finite pool of worry" in which more immediate issues like economic security crowd out less immediate issues like climate policy. Sadly, if we continue this thinking, sustainability in the Philippines has a long way to go. 

What does the Philippine Constitution say about environmental protection? From the constitution "The State shall protect and advance the right of the people to a balanced and healthful ecology in accord with the rhythm and harmony of nature." It shall be the policy of the State to regulate the prospecting of biological and genetic resources so that these resources are protected and conserved. How do we get more people to care about the natural world so they're moved to stand up and defend it? The answer is complex, of course, because humans are complex. But part of it can be found in a simple truth: Some people don't care much about the natural world because they haven't experienced nature directly.
