Youth climate activists gave audiences the fright of their lives in fashion show as they expose environmental horrors under Marcos Jr.' Regime for Global Climate Strike

On the 67th birthday of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.,Youth Advocates for Climate Action Philippines (YACAP), the Filipino counterpart of the Fridays for Future movement led by climate activist Greta Thunberg, delivered a compelling message of horror and resistance through ‘The Horror: Fashion Against Fascism and Fossil Fuels’ at the Ignacio B. Gimenez - KAL Theater in UP Diliman.
In the one and half hour full house show, models and activists alike used fashion and style in a haunting performance of the grotesque and filthy injustices done in our nation under President Marcos Jr.’s reign. From the burying of genuine climate initiatives through tree-planting projects, to the lack of a just transition framework that protects both the environment as well as our working people, the glaring neglect and atrocities done under the president’s tenure were brought to the spotlight for all to see.
A major shift from YACAP’s previous fashion shows, this year’s iteration of Fashion Against Fascism and Fossil Fuels (FAFFF) focused not only on the external disasters we face but also the tumultuous anxieties and rage of the youth at the destruction and injustices we face today under the climate crisis. The event shaped up to be an explosive yet entrancing show for everyone attending. Models include senatorial aspirant and fisherfolk leader Ronnel Arambulo of PAMALAKAYA, environmental defender and abduction survivor Eco Dangla, rising actress Cristina Ponce, along with other renowned models and representatives from different sectors united in a diverse line-up determined to reveal their struggles and expose its roots causes. The gorgeous but chilling designs provided by well-known artists and designers, such as Kevin Raymundo and Santi Obcena, not only served to heighten the models’ beauty, but also to highlight the fashion show’s important and pressing message of climate justice.
“The glaring incompetence and willful negligence of the current Marcos Jr. administration has ended in not only the loss of livelihood, but the lives themselves of the Filipino people,” said Alab, producer and national coordinator of YACAP. “ Calamities happen on the daily and the youth are watching it all crash and burn live, yet we are expected to let things proceed business as usual. This fashion show is our rejection of that: listen to our fears and feel our rage. This is our resistance.”
With this haunting show came a distinguished lineup of VIPs such as Pura Luka Vega, Yani Villarosa, Shanne Dandan, and Lyn Alumno that attended in support of addressing the environmental and social issues at the heart of the event. Even when the event closed, the whole team wasn’t about to let the show end. As Director Karl Castro said, “The garments strutted tonight on the runway reflects and echoes the plight of today’s generation of the youth and marginalized sectors most affected by the climate crisis. We hope that through this fashion show, more people realize that we are actually living in a reality more terrifying than a horror movie under this administration.”
Rae, regional coordinator of YACAP’s NCR chapter adds, “Through this show, we encourage our audience to join us during the Global Climate Strike on September 20. Together, let us confront the chilling reality of the climate crisis, and turn our collective fear into fierce action to fight for a future where we can all survive.”
YACAP leaves an indelible mark yet again on the climate action and fashion scene with The Horror as they convey decades worth of the youth’s rage built up at all the environmental atrocities done in the name of profit for the few. At the root of this rage is anger at the destruction of not only their present, but also their future. Do not be fooled by the smoke and the shining lights, these kids mean serious business; tonight, their anger cried for action and justice. With this, YACAP will be conducting a reprise of the fashion show on the 52nd Anniversary of Martial Law, September 21 at the Liwasang Bonifacio Freedom Park, because as the raging youth of YACAP says: The horror never ends until the climate crisis does.

Emeya makes it easier than ever to own an electric vehicle by giving drivers with the confidence to complete long-distance journeys, going wherever they need, with its fast-charging capabilities, including:
Charging from 10 to 80% in 14 minutes, using a 400-kW (600A capable) DC fast charger, making it one of the fastest charging electric vehicles (EVs) available today;
Reaching a peak charging power of 402kW, resulting in an average charging power of 331kW, between 10% and 80% battery state of charge2;

To achieve the fast-charging capabilities in its next generation hyper electric vehicles, Lotus uses a cell-to-pack battery structure, which means that 20 percent more cells can be packaged in the same space, compared to a standard module architecture. Emeya also uses a new cooling system architecture that is designed to improve the thermal performance and efficiency of the battery, which also contributes to an exceptionally high level of repeatable performance.
Lotus has incorporated the latest technology hardware, with its own proprietary software to provide consumers with confidence and safety, every time they drive. This includes:
Two NVIDIA DRIVE Orin systems-on-a-chip (SoCs), which are used to process data from 34 state-of-the-art surround sensors up to 30 times a second, offering 360-degree perception with no blind spots; and
Four deployable LiDARs, 18 radars, seven 8 mp cameras and five 2 mp cameras that combine to ensure driver confidence by scanning for obstacles at a radius of up to 200m around the car, in every direction, even in low light or inclement weather. In an era where technology is rapidly transforming education, the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) is leading the charge with innovative tools designed to enhance learning experiences for Filipino students.
Among its educational innovations is the Strategic Intervention Material for Teaching with Augmented Reality (SIMATAR), standing out as a tool in science education, leveraging Augmented Reality (AR) to bring complex scientific concepts to life.
DOST - SEI’s SIMATAR is another project under the leadership of Josephine Feliciano that revolutionizes the overall accessibility to science education knowledge.
Other DOST science education projects are the Virtual Laboratory Application in Science (VLAS), and the DOST coursewares which are softwares designed to create learning-conducive virtual environments for students and teachers alike.
SIMATAR is one of the excellent ‘filipinovations’ participating at the National Science and Technology Fair - Thailand. With one of the fair’s categories perfectly aligning with SIMATAR’s purpose of integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) in educational technologies.
Creating access to science education
As the education arm of DOST, DOST-SEI carries out their mandate to support the development of science and math education, as well as their continued innovation of educational technologies in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
SIMATAR is an innovative ICT resource utilizing augmented reality technologies in education that leverages handheld tablet platforms, seamlessly integrating computer-generated graphics with the real-world. Instead of creating an entirely new reality, SIMATAR blends graphics with the existing world around us.
The software provides visual references and practical examples for hard-to-understand STEM topics. It is designed for deployment in every local school, enhancing mastery and making classroom learning significantly more effective and efficient.
SIMATAR’s international influence
Having attended the BettAsia edutech conference in 2016 and 2018, Feliciano
and her team was able to benchmark and conceptualize local equivalents of educational
technologies presented there. This participation led to the conception of SIMATAR as
an idea and technology.
Feliciano said that with similar intent, she and her team aims to launch their
innovations locally and internationally in hopes of inspiring and helping others to assist
the teachings and learnings in STEM.

existing technologies to benchmark their capabilities with the global scene, as well as

From Classroom to NSTF - Thailand: The Global Journey of DOST-SEI’s Virtual Laboratory Application in Science (VLAS)

As the country continues to recover from the pandemic, the Department of Science and Technology - Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) sustains its efforts to improve their remote learning facilities. One of their projects was the Virtual Laboratory Application in Science (VLAS), which is an immersive 360° 3D biology lab simulator providing users with virtual experiments and theoretical knowledge.
DOST-SEI developed VLAS as a way for students to familiarize themselves with a laboratory environment through virtual means. This project aims to build competencies in students who lack access to physical laboratories due to geographical or logistical challenges.
VLAS is currently on its final stretch in development. They plan on releasing for Microsoft Operating Systems and other Virtual Reality platforms by 2025. The project aims to address further the resource integration of ICT in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), the team, under the leadership of Josephine Feliciano, believes that their online educational materials can be effectively used as supplementary to classroom teaching as well as in self-learning situations.
A Revolutionary Tool in Science Education
Similar to the motivation for the development of the DOST coursewares, VLAS was developed as a means of mitigating the consistent below average educational score of the country in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). It was in this assessment that the Philippines placed 77th out of 81 participating countries.
VLAS has been designed to revolutionize the way students and educators engage with biology experiments. The application offers an immersive virtual environment where users can conduct experiments and gain theoretical knowledge, all within the confines of a digital space.

With the Philippines' decade-long struggle with low academic performance in math and science, it is crucial to implement strategies to improve these outcomes. It has been a consistent and observed trend for the country to score poorly on the PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment), placing the Philippines below the global academic average.
The Department of Science and Technology - Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) developed Coursewares designed to integrate inside the curriculum and classroom settings established by the Department of Education in order to curb the continuous academic decline. These supplementary materials aim to bridge the gap of accessibility to quality materials in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
Eliminating academic challenges
In the 2022 PISA assessment, the Philippines placed 77th out of 81 participating countries. The country recorded an average score of 356 points in science and 355 points in mathematics, both way below the global average. Despite minor improvements from previous years, these results highlight ongoing significant challenges in the education system's ability to meet international standards in these critical areas.

The courseware underwent multiple validations and revisions to ensure utmost quality of the materials before implementation, creating a more viable mitigating tool for the below average academic ranking. This project is not only designed as a supplementary, but also as a stand-alone offline educational tool that allow the users to operate the software independently and gain mastery of the lessons. In its current stage, the software is nearing completion of
its online package for distribution to off-grid areas and schools.
Stirring the future: What’s next for DOST’s coursewares
Despite being an online learning platform, the project still faces challenges in logistics and distribution of their innovations and softwares to particular stakeholders.
Feliciano said that partnerships with providers, institutions, government, and non-government organizations would help bolster their distribution to help reach even more people.
Opening the doors for potential international linkages, DOST-SEI’s courseware is one of the country’s representatives at the National Science and Technology Fair in Thailand.
Feliciano expressed excitement for the upcoming opportunity to collaborate and benchmark their innovation on the international stage. She added that their team aims to leverage this showcase by contributing to the global educational pool in the STEM fields.

BAN Toxics urges regulatory agencies for lab tests on suspected toxic batteries, advices public to exercise due diligence when purchasing to reduce health and environmental risks

Toxics and waste watchdog BAN Toxics has warned the public to practice due diligence when purchasing China-made cheap AA batteries containing high levels of lead and cadmium. Priced between Php 20 and Php 25 for a two-piece set, Kingever Extra Heavy Duty AA batteries are sold on sidewalks and in bargain shops in commercial hubs such as Divisoria, Manila. A quick google search of said products also reveal they are widely available in popular online shopping platforms such as Shopee, and Lazada.
The battery packaging features a “Do Not Dispose of in Household Trash” symbol due to lead content. The label “carbon” printed on the battery itself indicates that it is a zinc-carbon type battery, which typically does not contain cadmium like Ni-Cd batteries. The same brand and model of AA batteries available on Shopee, from the only shop using the name Kingever Store, claims that the batteries contain 0% lead, mercury, and cadmium, and that they have several certifications, including CE (Conformité Européenne), RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances), and ISO 9001, among others. Additionally, on Alibaba.com, the official account of China-based Jinjiu Technology Co., Ltd., the company that produces Kingever Batteries, advertises the same claims.
However, BAN Toxics detected high concentrations of lead ranging from 1,250 to 6,500 parts per million (ppm) and cadmium from 160 to 250 ppm using an Olympus Vanta C Series X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) chemical analyzer.
Both lead and cadmium are identified among the top 10 chemicals of major public health concern by the World Health Organization (WHO). Both naturally occurring heavy metals are highly toxic to human health and the environment. Exposure to lead can lead to chronic and serious health issues across all age groups, with children being especially vulnerable to its neurotoxic effects. There are no safe levels of exposure to lead (UNEP, 2020). Cadmium is classified as carcinogenic to humans and may also cause a range of adverse health effects on various organs, including the kidneys, lungs, and bones. Cadmium is highly toxic to humans and the environment, even at very low exposure levels (UNEP, 2020).
BAN Toxics has yet to verify whether the same batteries sold by the Kingever Store on Shopee live up to their claims and does not rule out the possibility that those sold in physical bargain stores may be counterfeit. Nevertheless, BAN Toxics is urging regulatory agencies to investigate whether these products are properly registered and to take appropriate action.
“Batteries like these are essentially common household items, and their sale exposes the public—especially children—to highly toxic chemicals. They are even marketed for use in toys. We urge the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to take immediate action to ensure public safety,” said Thony Dizon, BAN Toxics Campaign and Advocacy officer.
The group urges the FDA to conduct immediate laboratory tests and analyses on these widely sold commodities. It also calls the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and local government units to speed up disposal infrastructure development and information campaigns on proper e-waste disposal, warning that “e-wastes containing hazardous material, if not properly managed, pose serious risks on human health and the environment.”
The DENR Chemical Control Order (CCO) for cadmium does not address the presence of this chemical in products such as batteries, toys, and electronic equipment. In contrast, the CCO for lead outlines stricter prohibitions on lead-containing products, including toys, paints, and school supplies, among others. To BAN Toxics' knowledge, there are no specific restrictions in place in the country regarding the use of cadmium and lead in household disposable batteries, unlike in regions such as the European Union, as well as in countries like the United States, Canada, and Japan.

Toxic and Waste Watchdog Inspects Busted Lamp Stockpile in QC Barangay, Detects Mercury Leakage
Toxic watchdog group BAN Toxics recently detected mercury leakage from a stockpile of busted fluorescent lamps stored in a barangay in Quezon City. Following a series of consultations by the group with barangays around the Quirino Memorial Medical Center (QMMC) for the Philippine Healthcare and mercury Wastes Management Project (PHCWMP), officials from Barangay Blue Ridge A informed BAN Toxics about their stockpile.
According to Barangay Captain Gabriel Legaspi, the stockpile was collected from their community as part of the Quezon City Local Government Unit’s (LGU) previous efforts to ensure the proper disposal of hazardous waste from households. However, Legaspi noted that the last collection of Quezon City LGU of such waste was probably around 2018, and since then, they have already accumulated six drumloads, each containing about 50 busted fluorescent lamps.
On September 6, 2024, a team from BAN Toxics, led by the group’s Campaign and Advocacy Officer, Thony Dizon, inspected the stockpile. Using a portable Olympus Vanta C Series X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analyzer, the group detected mercury leakage of up to 130 parts per million (ppm) from some of the lamps. The stockpile was stored in a covered shed inside the barangay LGU compound, which used to serve as their material recovery facility (MRF).
According to Jam Lorenzo, BAN Toxics Deputy Executive Director, a 130 ppm leakage from busted fluorescent lamps is relatively high, and there is a strong probability that the ambient air inside the shed is already contaminated. He pointed out that mercury from fluorescent lamps shouldn't be detectable by an XRF analyzer unless there is leakage.
BAN Toxics has advised the barangay to temporarily cover and seal the stockpile to prevent further contamination and to limit access to the shed. If entry is necessary, they should ensure that personal protective equipment is worn. Meanwhile, Barangay Captain Legaspi said they will follow up with the Quezon City LGU to assist in the proper transport and disposal of the stockpile.
Under Republic Act 6969, the “Toxic Substances and Hazardous and Nuclear Wastes Control Act of 1990,” busted fluorescent lamps are classified as hazardous waste due to their mercury content. Other related laws and regulatory policies also govern the management of fluorescent lamp waste, including Republic Act 9003, the “Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000,” Republic Act 7394, the “Consumer Act of the Philippines,” and the Joint Administrative Order (JAO) 2013-09-2001 by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Department of Energy (DoE).
At the level of the LGU, Section 5 of Quezon City Ordinance 2350-2014 states that busted fluorescent lamps and spent batteries from “households, government and public institutions shall be separated from domestic wastes” and “shall be brought to the Barangay MRF for temporary storage until collection by the city-contracted hazardous waste collector/transporter/treater.”
“We call on Brgy. Blue Ridge A and the Quezon City LGU’s Department of Sanitation and Cleanup Works (DSQC) to immediately coordinate and address the stockpile to prevent further mercury contamination. We also urge DSQC to conduct a survey in other barangays of Quezon City to determine if there are existing stockpiles,” Dizon said.
Dizon likewise called on the Department of Energy to revisit JAO 2013-09-2001, also known as the Lighting Industry Waste Management Guidelines. This JAO mandates producers to develop a lamp waste management plan, which includes establishing a lamp waste management facility. However, to BAN Toxics' knowledge, this has not been fully implemented.
Mercury is a highly toxic chemical that can cause irreparable damage to the nervous system. Inhaling mercury vapor can adversely affect the nervous, digestive, and immune systems, as well as the lungs and kidneys, and can potentially be fatal. It has long environmental persistence and global mobility—cycling through the atmosphere, ocean, and land. Its emissions and releases can bioaccumulate and biomagnify in the food chain, posing a significant threat to human health and the environment.
Under the Minamata Convention on Mercury, a global treaty to which the Philippines is a party, and the DENR Administrative Order 2019-20, “Revised Chemical Control Order for Mercury and Mercury Compounds,” certain types of fluorescent lamps should already have been phased out by 2022.
Currently, BAN Toxics is working with the DENR-Environmental Management Bureau on the PHCWMP, which has one of its main project components focused on the management, reduction, and disposal of mercury waste from healthcare facilities, including fluorescent lamp waste. In recent weeks, BAN Toxics has been conducting data collection activities in barangays surrounding hospitals involved in the project, such as QMMC, Eastern Visayas Medical Center in Tacloban City, and Cagayan Valley Medical Center in Tuguegarao City.
Officially launched on December 6, 2023, the PHCWMP is a five-year project, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and being implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), with the DENR-EMB as the national lead agency and BAN Toxics as the executing entity. PHCWMP aims to reduce the release and emissions of hazardous chemicals in healthcare wastes through environmentally sound practices.

They have also secured the drums with protective covers and seals to prevent further contamination. The stockpile is now ready for pick-up.

In a world increasingly defined by conflict and environmental degradation, Filipino Chevening scholars, Jennivabe Allan and Ana Lourdes Cosme are leveraging their unique experiences to drive meaningful change.
Jennivabe Allan: Countering Violence in Mindanao
Jennivabe Allan’s journey began in Basilan Province, Mindanao, where the scars of conflict shaped her early years. Witnessing the devastating impact of violence, Jennivabe dedicated her life to promoting peace and counter-terrorism efforts. As a police officer and educator, she led the "Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism" (PCVE) education campaign across several provinces, influencing over 2,000 individuals to stand against terrorism and advocate for peace.
Jennivabe’s work in integrating former rebels into the Philippine National Police through a specialised training programme under the Bangsamoro Organic Law highlights her commitment to unity and reconciliation. Her leadership is rooted in the belief that education and collaboration are vital tools in preventing terrorism and fostering lasting peace.
With advanced education in the United Kingdom, Jennivabe aims to return to the Philippines better equipped to develop and implement peace-building strategies, ultimately contributing to a more stable and secure nation.
Ana Lourdes Cosme: Defending the Oceans
For Ana Lourdes Cosme, the fight for justice is fought on the seas. As a maritime and environmental law expert, Ana has committed her career to preserving the Philippines' marine ecosystems. Her leadership roles at the University of the Philippines Institute for Maritime Affairs and Law of the Sea (UP IMLOS) have seen her spearhead initiatives to protect Philippine waters from the destructive impacts of illegal fishing, pollution, and climate change.
Ana’s advocacy extends beyond the courtroom; she educates fisherfolk on legal remedies, mentors future environmental lawyers, and advises policymakers on crucial environmental issues. Her goal is to strengthen the legal frameworks that protect the Philippines' rich marine biodiversity, ensuring a sustainable future for the nation's waters.
With a Chevening scholarship, Ana aims to enhance her expertise in ocean governance and environmental law, ultimately empowering the Philippines to better protect its invaluable marine resources.
Jennivabe and Ana are two of the 21 scholars that make up the Philippines’ Chevening cohort for 2024.
