Schneider Electric named the world’s most sustainable company by Time magazine and Statista

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Schneider Electric, the leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation, has topped the "World's Most Sustainable Companies for 2024" list by Time magazine and Statista. This recognition reflects Schneider Electric's ambitious goals to reduce its own emissions, but also the company’s commitment to helping its customers to become more energy efficient and reduce their emissions.

Both Time and Statista highlighted Schneider Electric's technological expertise and the Schneider Sustainability Impact (SSI) program. This transformative program drives and measures the company’s progress toward global sustainability 2021–2025 targets contributing to six long-term commitments that cover all environmental, social, and governance (ESG) dimensions. Among this progress, the company helped customers reduce their carbon emissions, with 553 million tonnes of CO2 saved and avoided since 2018. The company has also made significant progress in transforming its own supply chain. Carbon emissions from Schneider Electric's top 1,000 suppliers fell by 27% since the beginning of the program — and 21% of the company's most strategic supply chain partners have met Schneider Electric's decent work standards.

"We are incredibly honored to be recognized as the world's most sustainable company," said

BAN Toxics urges public to opt for plastic-free reusable bags

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

In celebration of International Plastic Bag Free Day, environmental NGO BAN Toxics calls on the public to minimize the use of so-called reusable eco-bags made from plastic materials such as polypropylene, polyester, and nylon. The group also emphasizes the need to further promote a culture of reuse.

International Plastic Bag Free Day began as a grassroots initiative to address the growing problem of plastic pollution. First launched by Zero Waste Europe and other environmental organizations, it designates July 3rd of each year to raise awareness about the environmental impact of single-use plastic bags, encouraging the adoption of reusable bags.

"While reusable bags have become commonplace in grocery and shopping markets to reduce single-use plastics, another emerging issue is how frequently these bags are actually being reused. If many of these reusable bags are made from synthetic polymers and treated as single-use, are we really addressing the plastic pollution problem?" BAN Toxics Policy Research and Development Officer Jam Lorenzo said.

A study published by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) recommends that for reusable bags to have a lower impact than single-use plastic bags, they should be used a sufficient number of times:

Cotton Bags: 50-150 times
Paper Bags: 4-8 times
Reusable Low-Density Polyethylene Bags: 5-10 times
Durable, Non-Woven Polypropylene Bags: 10-20 times

BAN Toxics notes that currently, there is limited data on the extent to which plastic-based reusable bags are reused versus wasted. Nonetheless, the group encourages the public to consider choosing traditional and biodegradable alternatives such as ‘bayongs’ made from dried ‘buri’ or pandan leaves, bags made out of water lily, abaca, and rattan, or canvas bags.

“A critical change in behavior among consumers, retailers, and producers is needed to further instill the reuse culture. Reusable bags may be considered a stop-gap measure to address plastic pollution, but if we don’t actually reuse these items, we're just replacing single-use plastics with another type of waste,” Lorenzo said.

Plastic pollution has surged alongside the growth of plastic production, with single-use plastics now comprising 50% of total production. Studies indicate that global production has risen sharply from 1.7 million metric tonnes in 1950 to approximately 400 million metric tonnes (by polymer) in 2022, and projections suggest it could double once more in the next two decades.

According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources - Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB), the Philippines generates 61,000 metric tons of solid waste daily, of which 12 to 24 percent, or about 7,320 to 14,640 metric tons, is plastic waste.

Meanwhile, a recent statement by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) projects that the country’s daily waste could increase to 194,138 metric tons by 2055. This projection is based on the average waste generation of higher-income and developed countries, using the latest population projections by the Philippine Statistics Authority.

Plastic waste management in the country is governed by the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 (Republic Act No. 9003), which is supplemented by the Philippine Development Plan (PDP) 2023–2028 and the Extended Producer Responsibility Act of 2022 (Republic Act No. 11898). To date, at least 489 out of the country’s 1,634 local government units have passed a local ordinance banning single-use plastics.

BAN Toxics notes that despite these mechanisms, greater steps are needed in terms of effective implementation and stakeholder engagement. The group also believes that new laws promoting the reduction of plastic production and consumption, as well as the adoption of more sustainable alternatives, are still necessary.

“Plastic pollution remains one of the biggest threats to human health and the environment, and we can only address this by reducing the production and consumption of plastics, especially single-use ones,” the group concluded.

Last April, Lorenzo participated in the fourth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-4) to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment. BAN Toxics is advocating for a plastics treaty that adopts a full-life cycle approach to addressing plastic pollution and prioritizes substantial reductions in global plastic production. The fifth INC session is scheduled for November 25 to December 1, 2024, in Busan, Republic of Korea.

The Post Office wishes to make the memory of our popes with the Filipinos close and alive through this Pope Stamps Exhibition.

During the program, SecGen Kim said, “it is an honor for me to be given this opportunity to recognize my work and for my fellow Filipinos to appreciate it which I hope would inspire others especially the youth to collect postage stamps”.

Apart from our traditional postal service, the Post Office is seriously gearing towards how it can innovate in a digital-forward approach, improve its production and promote non-traditional uses of the collectibles (stamps) using the technology and the diverse social media.

This traveling Pope Stamps exhibit has previously been held in Manila and Malabon and is set to visit other venues in the country for the public to cherish and appreciate the value of stamp collecting in today’s generation.

UP Mathematician Develops Model For Heat Propagation Through Rough Surfaces

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Suppose you have a pair of pants you need to wear tomorrow. The problem is, you just washed them, and they’re still damp. So you resort to a handy tool: the flat iron.

Using the iron, you can easily dry the flat parts of the pants, but you will notice that it is more difficult to dry some areas where the surface is uneven – near the zipper, the side and back pockets, the seams, and the waistband.

That’s because the heat from the iron does not reach the uneven areas as quickly as it does the flatter areas. In other words, the heat propagation, or the heat transfer from the iron to the pants, is not uniform on rough surfaces.

Understanding how heat propagates from one material to another is important in designing efficient cooling devices, such as air conditioners, or constructing infrastructures that minimize heat from the sun. In some cases, heat propagation is simple to model when the boundary at which the two materials touch is flat, such as ironing the flat areas of the pants. In other cases, however, the heat propagation model is more complex when the boundary is rough, such as when ironing the uneven areas of the pants.

Millora-Brown to bolster up Maroons frontcourt in season 87

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Gilas prospect big man Quentin Millora-Brown will suit up for the UP Fighting Maroons in UAAP Season 87.

The 6’10 Fil-Am center last played for The Citadel in US NCAA Division 1 where he averaged 11.2 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1.5 blocks.

UP Office for Athletics and Sports Development director Bo Perasol is ecstatic to share the development as it is years in the making.

"We have been talking with Quentin for a time now. We've visited him a couple of times since 2019. We are beyond happy and really excited to finally have him in the team for next season."

Millora-Brown’s decision to play his final year in college with the Fighting Maroons was made easier by the fact that he comes from a family of UP alumni.

“My grandfather studied in UP. It’s his dream to see me don the Fighting Maroons jersey and play for his alma mater. Right now, I’m just really excited to meet everyone as we've been in touch even before the pandemic. Looking forward to spending time with my new teammates ahead of the UAAP season,” shared Millora-Brown who is expected to arrive in Diliman this month.

"Of course, aside from playing for UP in the UAAP, I also want to represent the Philippines with Gilas," he added.

The one-and-done Millora-Brown will look to provide veteran leadership to the young Maroons frontcourt of Sean Alter, Gani Stevens, Seven Gagate, and Dikachi Ududo and help UP bring the title back to Diliman after two consecutive runner-up finishes.

Revitalised First United Building Wins Malasakit Gran Prix Award at 2024 Good Design Award PH

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

QC’s Right to Care Card and Philippine Textile Table Swatchbook win Gold Awards

On 29 June, the Department of Trade and Industry-Design Center of the Philippines (DTI-Design Center) awarded outstanding designs during the 2024 Good Design Award Philippines, held at The Globe Tower, Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.

The Malasakit Gran Prix Award winner was the First United Building in Escolta, Manila. This project embodies the power of restoration and "adaptive reuse" in driving urban regeneration. Originally the Perez-Samanillo Building, this Art Deco landmark, designed by Andres P. Luna, son of the renowned painter Juan Luna, was Manila's tallest building upon its 1928 completion.

The project's vision transformed the historic structure into a vibrant hub for creative communities. By breathing new life into the building, it serves as a model for sustainable preservation, highlighting how historical significance can thrive alongside contemporary use. The First United Building Community Museum, a component of the larger revitalization efforts for the historic Art Deco landmark, further enriches the experience, offering a glimpse into Escolta's golden era as Manila's premier business district.

"The historic building's transformation shows the power of placemaking, where it's not just the walls and posts that make a place but the communities that flourish in it. The restored First United Building in Escolta revitalized the district, attracting creative tenants and drawing a new demographic of visitors and regular audiences that come to Escolta to escape the cookie cutter spaces that proliferate in many urban areas. Despite challenges, the building's revival showcases the power of design and preservation, not only in restoring its past but also in fostering Escolta's economic resurgence that caters to the next generation of the creative class," said Good Design Award Philippines 2024 Jury Chair Mylene Abiva and the Co-Chair of Design Center’s Design Advisory Council 2024-2027.

Golds for Philippine Design

The Right to Care Card, a healthcare proxy document from Quezon City, won the Gold Award. This innovative initiative allows same-sex couples to make medical decisions for each other during emergencies, demonstrating how design can enhance inclusivity and government services.

The Philippine Textile Table Swatchbook of ANTHILL Fabric Factory also received the Gold Award by showing indigenous Philippine fabrics through “storytelling narratives and interactive features.”

"This year's awardees are indeed a reflection of the transformative journey of Philippine design as a strategic problem-solving process that drives innovation, builds business success, and leads to a better quality of life through innovative products, systems, services, and experiences,” declared Rhea Matute, Executive Director of the Design Center of the Philippines. "Our designers are storytellers, changemakers, and agents of malasakit (compassion) who exhibit the resilience and creativity of the Filipino spirit.”

“The Good Design Award Philippines connects this year’s winners to the world. We are excited to see and support our country’s designers in introducing Philippine design to the global market,” said Crisela Magpayo Cervantes, Vice President of Marketing Communications for Globe Telecom.

The success of the Good Design Award Philippines rests on a foundation of collaboration. This remarkable achievement would not have been possible without the strong partnership and collaboration among the Design Center of the Philippines (DCP), the Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP) and the ASEAN-Japan Center (AJC).

Furthermore, other key partners played crucial roles in the program's success:

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) aligned entries with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), ensuring design innovations addressed critical global challenges.

The Department of Science and Technology's Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) served as technical consultants for the Material Innovation and Object Making categories, providing guidance and expertise on new technologies and product innovations.

Globe Telecom spearheaded the digitization of the award system process and provided the venue for the evaluations.

The Good Design Award Philippines, a biennial program, recognizes outstanding design across various categories. This year saw a significant increase in entries, with 204 submissions and 84 shortlisted finalists. Awardees received a commemorative trophy, a miniature replica of an Arturo Luz sculpture, the Good Design Award Philippines seal, and the opportunity to compete for Japan's prestigious G Mark. This international recognition opens doors for Philippine design to reach the global market, fostering trade ties with Japan.

The 2024 Good Design Award Philippines echoes the spirit of World Industrial Design Day (WIDD), a global event organized by the World Design Organization every 29th of June. By holding its ceremony on 29 June, the Good Design Award Philippines joins the global celebration of World Industrial Design Day. Both events emphasize the power of design to go beyond aesthetics and functionality and highlight the importance of emotions and “design with malasakit”. The Good Design Award Philippines' message, "It starts with malasakit (compassion)," aligns with WIDD's global theme, "Let's Get Emotional," underscoring the role of design in addressing social, economic, and environmental challenges as reflected in the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

By putting compassion (malasakit) at the forefront, the Good Design Award Philippines aligns with the call to evoke positive change and inspire a brighter future through design.

About the Design Center of the Philippines

The Design Center of the Philippines is an attached agency of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) mandated to promote design as a problem-solving tool and catalyst for positive change.

In 2013, the Design Center of the Philippines further enhanced its role in the development of the design industry and the creative economy through the Philippine Design Competitiveness Act of 2013 (also known as Republic Act 10557), expanding the agency’s mandate in promoting design to improve the creative branding.

CAVITEX connector roads’ on-time completion gets fresh momentum from Presidential support

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

The on-time completion of the two connector roads of the Cavitex Expressway (CAVITEX) has recently acquired fresh momentum, inspired by the expression of support by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., when he led the groundbreaking and inauguration of the three CAVITEX links or connector roads in different locations in one day.

“The Presidential declaration of support for these major infrastructure projects has energized us all in completing the projects on time, leaving no stone unturned to finish the job,” thus declared Raul L. Ignacio, president of the CAVITEX Infrastructure Corporation,” a subsidiary of the larger Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC) of the MVP Group.

‘Final step to enhance transport infra. In his speech, President Marcos called the actions taken only last week as “the final step in completing the CAVITEX C5 Link Expressway, enhancing our transportation infrastructure network on behalf of countless motorists and passengers.” And “the [CAVITEX]-CALAX Link, originating from Kawit, Cavite, is a 1.2-kilometer connection whose length may be short, but its impact will be substantial. By establishing a direct connection to CALAX, we also ease the traffic congestion at the busy intersection of Tirona Highway and Centennial Road.” With this, we anticipate a significant improvement in the road network connectivity from Kawit to the greater CALABARZON region.

President Marcos and his transport-related Cabinet members were joined by Manuel V. Pangilinan, MPTC Chairman, Mr. Rogelio Singson, President and CEO of Metro Pacific Tollways, and Mr. Raul L. Ignacio, President and General Manager of Cavitex Infrastructure Corporation.

Two contractors: Beat the deadline. DMCI, under a P3.3 billion contract has committed to meet the construction deadline to finish Segment 3B, the final portion of the CAVITEX C5 Link, a six (6) lane 2.0 km expressway connecting CAVITEX at Paranaque in the West and C5 Road Taguig in the East. This segment will enable motorists to travel from Cavite to Taguig City, bypassing a number of service roads.

EEI will be completing the 1.3-km. dual 2-lane CAVITEX-CALAX Link Extension also in August 2025, envisioned to stimulate commerce and industry in Cavite, Laguna and Metro Manila.

“The Presidential imprimatur has resonated as the President’s marching orders for our CIC project managers and our two contractors to speed up the construction so that the two segments will be ready for full operations on August 2025,” Ignacio pointed out.

Right-of-way acquisition. For both construction projects, Ignacio earlier met his right-of-way (ROW) acquisition team in order to resolve all issues to ultimately clear the way for the road alignments and access roads. Progress has been made in CIC’s mix of persuasive initiatives addressed to project affected persons (PAPs) made up of legal, financial and communication strategies, Ignacio added.

At press time, the ROW status of Segment 3B of the C5 Link stands at 70.60 percent, leaving the CIC ROW project managers only 29.4 percent balance to finish the job, Ignacio added. On the other hand, the progress of the CAVITEX-CALAX Link ROW acquisition is ahead with 77.14 percent, leaving CIC only 22.86 percent to clear the way for this alignment.

“With this new impetus from the Palace, we will beat our construction deadline – and the winner is every motorist and passenger south of Metro Manila and beyond,” Ignacio said.
