UPMV K9 builds disaster resiliency through dog training

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

After just two days of guidance, the results of the UPMV K9 Basic Obedience Workshop speak for themselves.

In an effort to promote the better care, appreciation, and utilization of dogs in local communities, this hard-working multisectoral group of volunteers is offering the public basic and advanced K9 training courses.

The UPMV K9 Corps recently graduated over two dozen happy pet owners from its two-weekend Basic Obedience Workshop held last February 3 and 10. Students and professionals from all walks of life with a common love for dogs came away amazed at how better behaved their pets could be and were also surprised at how much better they could bond with their furry companions.

UPMV K9 vice president and lead trainer Audie Menez starts off the UPMV K9 Basic Obedience Workshop with some tips and pointers before hitting the field in earnest.

“Contrary to popular belief, dog training is as much about the owner as it is about the pet,” explained UPMV K9 president Elah Tendero. “We don’t just teach dogs how to behave. We teach people how to better understand and communicate with their dogs.”

The workshop was conducted for a minimal fee to help the UPMV K9 Corps raise funds for its main goal of providing free Search and Rescue training to help civilian volunteers and their beloved pets play active roles in disaster response efforts. This free but comprehensive six-month training includes obedience as well as search-and-rescue training for the dogs, and also imparts disaster response and outdoor survival skills to the volunteer handlers.

Volunteer K9 instructors and handlers (in orange uniforms) teach obedience training techniques useful for anyone who owns a dog: everything from proper leash handling to sitting, staying, and recall.

“Sadly, more often than not, pets get neglected or forgotten in the event of a disaster. They often get left behind as communities evacuate,” Tendero laments. “But more than just being our companions, our dogs can also be of invaluable assistance in disaster response and relief efforts.”

Established in 2017, the UPMV K9 Corps is a non-profit organization established in partnership between the University of the Philippines, the Metro Manila Development Authority, and the UP Vanguard Inc. To date, there are already close to a hundred volunteers and K9s in the program, with openings for Batch 11 to be announced soon.

VP-Sec. Sara underscores valuable insights of SEAMEO Centers to MATATAG implementation during Malaysia visit

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Vice President of the Philippines and Secretary of Education Sara Z. Duterte cited the successful education strategies of the Malaysian Ministry of Education and the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Centers which can offer valuable insights for the Philippines in its implementation of the MATATAG Agenda and curriculum.

“Making the curriculum relevant is one of our thrusts, and the lessons on science and math teaching from RECSAM [Regional Centre for Education in Science and Mathematics] can help us achieve this,” VP-Sec. Sara said in her speech during an official visit to SEAMEO Regional Tropical Medicine and Public Health (TROPMED) Network Malaysia.

“We will also learn from SEAMEO SEN’s [Regional Centre for Special Educational Needs] inclusion programmes on how to ensure the well-being of all our learners. TROPMED Malaysia’s initiative will help support the health of our learners and teachers, and establish a safe and healthy learning environment for them,” she added.

VP-Sec Duterte commended the SEAMEO RECSAM for its forward-thinking science and mathematics programs, like the Space Education Hub and the upcoming Makerspace, envisioned to be a hub for creativity and hands-on learning, and the SEAMEO SEN for championing inclusive education.

The Education Secretary likewise lauded TROPMED’s One Health Initiative.

The three centers support the shared goal of inclusive, quality education, as outlined in the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, and will help reach goals faster, especially in educational and scientific development.

As president of the SEAMEO Council, VP-Sec. Sara’s visit aimed to strengthen ties in education, science, and culture between the Philippines and Malaysia.

“The collaboration between our Ministries of Education and the SEAMEO Centres will hopefully pave the way for new programmes towards achieving our vision for an innovative, inclusive educational system. I believe that cooperation and collaboration can foster unity and stability for our learners, for our countries, and for the region,” VP-Sec. Sara said.

Duterte met with Honorable Fadhlina Sidek, Malaysia’s Minister of Education, to discuss the critical role of education in a nation’s growth, innovation, and a hopeful future. She also had a courtesy call to the Honourable Dato’ Sri Fadillah Yusof, the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia.

DepEd, partners call for more opportunities for women in STEM field

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Underscoring the importance of involvement, diversity, and access of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) field, the Department of Education (DepEd) gathered around 500 female learners and teachers to celebrate the 2024 International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 13.

Spearheaded by the External Partnerships Office- International Cooperation Office (EPS-ICO), the event featured activities promoting equality, science and technology, and environmental conservation. The event highlights student exhibitors who showcased their projects and inventions that won them awards in their schools.

"Together, let us champion the cause of gender equality and build a future where every girl, every woman can reach for the stars and unleash their scientific potential,” DepEd NCR Regional Director Jocelyn D.R Andaya said in her welcome message.

RD Andaya, also underscored the significant shift of enrollees in the STEM programs of DepEd. In SDO Manila alone, 51% of STEM program enrollees are girls, signaling the narrowing of gender gaps in science and technology among girls and boys.

Additionally, the program also highlighted the efforts of DepEd partners in ensuring that girls were given the same importance, opportunities, and platforms in the male-dominated field.

Executives from partner organizations and agencies like the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation, Inc., FELTA Multimedia Inc., Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA), UNILAB Foundation Inc., Department of Science and Technology (DOST), STI Education, and Empower Ability gave presentations on how their organizations and agencies can act as a springboard for female learners who wishes to pursue further education and careers in STEM.

Afterward, the learners were given an opportunity to ask the guest panelists questions during the program's open forum part.

Member learners and teachers for Youth for Environment in Schools (YES-O) are also invited to the event as the program kicked off with an onsite eco-tour led by SM Supermalls.

In this tour, the 35 participants were guided inside SM North EDSA to their facilities on solid waste management, water conservation, energy efficiency, and air quality programs. The eco-tour aims to inspire these YES-O officials and members to take part in the responsibility and caring for the environment.

UP Atmospheric Physicist Takes to the Skies with NASA: Monitoring Air Quality on NASA817

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Dr. Gerry Bagtasa of the UP Diliman College of Science – Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology (UPD – CS IESM) took flight with NASA last Sunday, February 11, 2024, as part of an air pollution measurement campaign called ASIA-AQ (Airborne and Satellite Investigation of Asian Air Quality).

NASA817—more specifically the NASA DC-8 plane—is an airborne science laboratory based in NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center in Palmdale, California. It is flown to other parts of the world to gather data to support the research and experiments undertaken by the global scientific community.

The objective of this particular series of flights with the Filipino team, consisting of DENR-EMB, the Manila Observatory, and Dr. Bagtasa, was to assess the air quality of multiple Asian cities by utilizing satellite remote sensors and air quality models. With the equipment of the modified Douglas DC-8 jetliner, they were able to observe the atmosphere and detect various pollutants such as particulate matter, ozone, carbon dioxide, and methane, which are not usually locally measured above the ground.

“The purpose is to improve our understanding of the dynamics of air pollution in the region,” Dr. Bagtasa said.

With the Filipino team, they were able to help plan the flights by providing air quality and weather forecasts. They also provided insights into local weather patterns, drawing from Dr. Bagtasa and the Manila Observatory’s recent publications and expertise in contextualizing the data being collected.

Flight path of the 8-hour trip around Metro Manila and surrounding regions flying alternately between 1000 ft and 10,000 ft.

The Experience

NASA817 flew four times to the Philippines on February 6, 7, 11, and 13, and for each flight, there were a few available seats for observers. Dr. Bagtasa and scientists of the Manila Observatory and DENR joined different flights, and of the 8-hour experience, the plane would constantly change altitudes from 1000 ft to 10,000 ft, then back again, to gather more data at different levels of elevation throughout the region.

“In almost any airplane ride, we encounter some brief bumpy to very bumpy, turbulent moments, right? Imagine that happening for 8 hours—the flight was brutal. I guess mainly due to the low-altitude nature of the flight,” Dr. Bagtasa commented. “And to make it more exciting, I experienced the hardest of hard turns and rolls in an airplane during the flight.”

With humor, he also went on to say, “Most of the researchers on the plane wear some transdermal patch behind the ear for motion sickness. I didn't, and I was in the backmost seat. After around 5 - 6 hours into the flight, considering that I've been on probably >100 flights in my lifetime, it was my first time to throw up in a plane ride.”

Despite the bumpy ride, the flights are crucial to the campaign, ASIA-AQ. NASA’s project presents an avenue for international cooperation, partnering with local scientists, researchers, and experts to implement a unified strategy across various Asian nations in addressing not only regional air quality concerns but also gaining a broader understanding of the interpretation of satellite data and air quality modeling.

Dr. Bagtasa and the Manila Observatory partnered with the DENR to join the flights to provide their local knowledge on the air pollution of the country. While the data gathered on these trips are still being processed and have yet to be published, NASA817 will now move on to South Korea, taking measurements in Taiwan on the way. After Seoul, it will then fly to Malaysia and Thailand. After the ASIA-AQ campaign, the NASA DC8 will be retired.

Taking care of yourself this Valentine's day and beyond

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Making responsible choices, especially concerning your future, is crucial.

This is particularly true when it comes to sexual activity, which can have significant physical, emotional, and legal implications for teens. Prioritizing safety, consent, and clear communication is essential in any situation involving sexual activity.

The recent study by the University of the Philippines Population Institute (UPPI) offers valuable insights.

Their Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality Study (YAFS5), known as the most comprehensive source of information on young people's sexual and reproductive health, found a significant decline in teenage pregnancy rates.

The proportion of young women aged 15-19 who have begun childbearing dropped sharply from 13.7 percent in 2013 to 6.8 percent in 2021.

The Commission on Population and Development (CPD) suggests this positive trend could be partly due to the government's sustained efforts, alongside civil society and development partners, to reduce and prevent adolescent pregnancies. These efforts likely involved education, awareness campaigns, and improved access to reproductive health services.

This decline highlights the effectiveness of responsible decision-making and access to information. Choosing to delay sexual activity allows young people to focus on their education, personal development, and future goals. Additionally, understanding consent and practicing safe sex are crucial for protecting physical and emotional well-being.

Remember, making informed choices empowers you to build a brighter future for yourself. Always prioritize your safety and well-being when making decisions about your sexual health.

While teenage pregnancy rates have declined, thanks to factors like reduced premarital sex and better contraceptive use, a worrying trend has emerged: an increase in live births among very young adolescents, especially 10-14 year olds, according to the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) and Civil Registry and Vital Statistics (CRVS) data.

This calls for heightened vigilance, particularly as Valentine's Day approaches. This holiday can fuel curiosity among young people, leading some to believe it's a time defined by romantic gestures, potentially leading to risky sexual behavior and early pregnancy.

To navigate this season and beyond safely, remember these crucial points:

1. Love doesn't require sexual activity: True love and affection can be expressed in many ways, without the pressure to engage in sex.

2. Consent is key (walang pilitan): Always ensure both partners have clear and enthusiastic consent before any sexual activity. Open and honest communication with your partner is crucial. Discuss boundaries, desires, and expectations beforehand to ensure that you both feel comfortable and respected. Consent is non-negotiable

3. Prioritize your safety and well-being: Don't feel pressured to engage in activities that make you uncomfortable or unsafe.

4. Protect yourself (matutong magbasa-basa at magtanong): Educate yourself about safe sex practices and use reliable contraception, if applicable.

5. Consider emotional readiness (ready ka na ba talaga?): Sexuality is not just physical; it involves emotional intimacy as well. Make sure you and your partner are emotionally ready for the potential consequences of sexual activity, such as feelings of attachment or regret.

6. Use protection (dapat protektado ka): If you decide to have sex, always use protection to prevent unwanted pregnancy and reduce the risk of STIs. Condoms are highly effective when used correctly and consistently.

7. Avoid pressure (huwag mo munang isuko ang Bataan kung kinakailangan):

Never feel pressured into sexual activity by your partner or anyone else. It's okay to say no, and your boundaries should always be respected.

8. Get tested (huwag mahiya at magpa-test): If you've been sexually active before or plan to be, consider getting tested for STIs regularly, even if you don't have any symptoms. Many STIs can be asymptomatic but still pose health risks.

9. Know the legal implications (may mga batas ukol rito): Be aware of the legal age of consent in your area and understand the potential legal consequences of engaging in sexual activity with someone under the age of consent.

10. Plan ahead (anong balak mo?): If you anticipate being sexually active, make a plan for contraception and protection beforehand. Keep condoms or other contraceptives on hand and know how to use them correctly.

11. Seek support and guidance (makinig sa mga payo): If you have questions or concerns about sex, relationships, or sexual health, don't hesitate to seek guidance from a trusted adult, healthcare provider, or a reputable source of information.

Remember, your well-being is paramount. Celebrate Valentine's Day and other occasions in a way that respects yourself and others. Make responsible choices that prioritize your safety and future.

Remember, sexual activity is a significant decision that should be made thoughtfully and responsibly. Your health, safety, and well-being should always be the top priority. If you're unsure or uncomfortable, it's okay to wait until you feel more confident and prepared.

When Love Blooms Between Two Cultures

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Japanese brand Almond Koka collaborates with Auro Chocolate for a Valentine's pop-up café in  Love transcends borders especially when two share the same passion. The same is true for Japan’s most-loved almond milk brand, Glico’s Almond Koka and award-winning Filipino tree-to-bar chocolate brand Auro Chocolate – who both share the same passion for championing culinary diversity. That’s when love blooms.

This Valentine’s season, the two teamed up to create ORINASU CAFÉ, a special pop-up cafe that marries together Japanese and Filipino cultures through lovingly handcrafted drinks and treats. Located at MITSUKOSHI BGC, ORINASU CAFÉ will add more sweetness to the season from February 1 to February 19, 2024.

Japan’s No. 1 and the Philippines’ Finest

From the makers of the globally loved brand, Pocky, Glico’s Almond Koka is Japan’s best-selling almond milk brand, known for its superior quality taste–all thanks to the company’s relentless pursuit of quality and Japanese technology. Yet another signature work of Glico’s finesse at blending great taste with nutrition, Almond Koka offers a richer and stronger nutty flavor because of the emulsifying method of adding honey and almond oil to ground almond paste.

Collaborating with Japan’s Almond Koka is the Philippines’ premier chocolate brand, Auro Chocolate. The chocolate company carved its path to the global chocolate scene by earning prestigious awards at esteemed international chocolate competitions. For this new concept,

Auro Chocolate prides itself in working with MITSUKOSHI FRESH in selecting only the finest Japanese ingredients – such as Matcha, Hojicha and Miso – to be used in crafting the menu.

And in line with Auro’s meticulous, innovative, and time-tested know-how, this collaboration with Almond Koka brings out the best in Filipino & Japanese epicurean cultures.

Organise CAFÉ

Japanese for 'weave’, ORINASU is exactly what the pop-up cafe symbolizes: the weaving of two cultures through the harmonious fusion of Almond Koka’s and Auro’s product versatility–as seen with the cafe’s limited-edition line of “Choc Au Lait” vegan-friendly drinks and snacks.

Gracing the menu is the fascinating drink that is the Miso Salted Caramel! This luscious vegan-friendly white chocolate drink combined with Maruhide’s top-quality Miso, Auro’s Salted Caramel and Almond Koka - our take on Salted Caramel with a Japanese Twist. Served with a generous heap of White Chocolate shavings.

Hojicha is just pure bliss in a cup. Enjoy the comforting flavors of Auro’s creamy white chocolate, infused with Ikeda Senchado’s top-quality Hojicha, complemented by the richness of Almond Koka.

If you haven’t found “the one” yet, maybe the next drink could be your perfect matcha.

ORINASU’s vegan-friendly white chocolate matcha hits the spot with its perfect balance of sweet and earthy. The Ikeda Senchado matcha creation provides that familiar grassy notes, blended with a sweet, velvety finish from Almond Koka.

If you’re looking for something bold, then you’ll surely love the luscious Dark Choc. This drink is incredibly rich yet smooth because of the combined decadence of Auro Dark Chocolate and Almond Koka.

Completing the menu is the Dark Chocolate Stuffed with Strawberries French Toast. Each bite is a delightful burst of Auro dark chocolate filling, tarty strawberry jam with the goodness of Almond Koka. Every treat from ORINASU CAFÉ is brought to you by Almond Koka and Auro Chocolate. For more information, FOLLOW @glico_ph and @aurochocolate on INSTAGRAM.

UP Physicists Present Network Science Research at the House of Representatives

Dr. Reinabelle Reyes and Dr. May Lim of the UP Diliman National Institute of Physics (UPD-CS NIP) presented their research on transport network efficiency at the recent House Committee on Visayas Development meeting on February 6, 2024.

Together with independent researcher JC Albert Peralta, Dr. Reyes and Dr. Lim used a 300-year-old math discipline called network science to model transport network systems during relief operations. They applied their model to the Visayas transport network, where they discovered that Northern Samar is the most vulnerable to relief operation delays.

Read more about their research in the press release here: https://science.upd.edu.ph/up-physicists-improve-phls-disaster-response-with-network-science/

Their research opens novel ways for improving relief operations and aids policymakers in decision-making and strategic planning. Attendees of the meeting at the House of Representatives included committee leaders and members of the Visayas Region, including Hon. Karen Lolita Javier, Committee Chair and 2nd District of Leyte Representative; Hon. Francisco “Kiko” Benitez, 3rd District of Negros Occidental Representative; Hon. Anna Victoria Veloso-Tuazon, 3rd District of Leyte Representative; Francisco “Sonny” Romuar III, Committee Secretary; and Atty. Cherry Pastor-Dalauiadao, Committee Staff.

At the meeting, they discussed the need to decentralize and distribute resources such as food and key equipment to all congressional districts to mitigate delays in relief operations. They also emphasized the necessity of building transportation infrastructure in areas with no existing road networks.

“It was our first time at the House of Representatives and, though it was a bit intimidating at first, I believe in the end, we made the most of the opportunity given to us to share our work and learn from the perspectives of the House committee members, who are representatives and influential leaders for Visayas,” Dr. Reyes said on their experience.

“Doing scientific research is a very focused activity and involves discussion mostly among our small group of collaborators (and peer reviewers),” Dr. Reyes continued. “So having this opportunity to take the fruits of this work to the highest levels of leadership in the country is quite fulfilling at a different level.”

The research team aims to continue working on their research, developing an open-source, user-friendly web app that lets the public simulate different transport network systems. Dr. Reyes and Mr. Peralta will present their work at the upcoming PyCon PH 2024 conference on February 25 and 26, 2024.

Getting Ready for the GGBet Sign-Up

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Do you intend to become a member of the GGBet online casino platform? This is a smart idea as soon as the resource will provide you with plenty of worthy opportunities. You will have a chance to select from a ton of cool games and a sufficient number of payment options. Plus, you will always be able to ask for proper assistance. However, you need to keep a few guidelines in mind before you start to go through the registration process. They are about to be covered in the text below.

Point 1: How Old Are You?

You need to be at least 18 years old to be able to deal with the GGBet online casino activities.

There are no exceptions to this rule. You should know that there is no point in trying to hide your real age. You will have to complete the profile to the fullest to withdraw cash you manage to win.

This means that basically, anyone can sign up (date of birth is not checked at the very first step of joining the platform). However, the fact of your age is about to be checked later so you must be correct about your personality data.

Point 2: Get Ready to Provide Basic Data About You

Apart from the date of birth, you will need to mention your full name, sex, address, and phone number. This will be indicated in your profile.

As for the very beginning, you only need to promote your email address (phone number can be used instead of it) and create a secure password. This is it! Certainly, you must make sure that the data is correct.

Plus, the participants have to select the currency that seems to be the most convenient for them.

You will be using either your phone number or email address and a password in order to log in to your personal account on a regular basis.

Point 3: The Sign-Up Will Take a Minimum of Your Time

This is one of the aspects valued by GGBet gamblers most of all. You do not have to be involved in the lengthy process of the sign-up. It is enough to state three pieces of data (email address or phone number, password, and currency), confirm your age, and accept the Terms and Conditions. This is it! All of this will not occupy more than several minutes. After that, you will be pleased to enjoy qualitative gambling!

The majority of gamblers do not come across any significant hardships when trying to sign up.

The problems might take place within the logging-in but you can always ask for support. Plus, check the correctness of your data.

Point 4: What Online Casino Games Are You Fond of?

Before you become a full-fledged member of the GGbet platform, you need to consider your true gambling preferences. It is sensible to check if there are games you are in love with.

However, the great news is that the majority of gamblers will be able to find what they are seeking here at GGBet. There are quite a few cool categories of games on the site. This is what you are going to come across:

● Slots;

● Table games;

● Live casino titles;

● Instant options;

● Poker, etc.

All of this is enough, right? Plus, you are always welcome to filter the titles in accordance with the providers delivered them.

Point 5: Be Aware of the Bonuses

You should keep in mind that a lot of cool stuff is prepared for you on the platform. Bonuses and promos are surely one of the best parts of interaction with the resource.

First of all, you will get to savor a welcome bonus. It is essential to join the site and make the first deposit to be eligible for the offer. When you decide to add cash for the second time, you can also get a present. Note that the welcome pack includes getting rewards for the first four deposits you are about to introduce.

Apart from this, there is a weekly and weekend bonus. Each of these is tied to making a deposit as well. However, these presents can certainly help you win decent cash!

Point 6: Multiple Accounts Are an Absolute No

This is one of the rules established in the Terms and Conditions of the GGBet platform. You are not allowed to create several accounts on the site. Such a fact is going to be revealed, and you won’t be able to enjoy playing on the site at all.

All in all, it is always a sensible idea to have a look at the Terms and Conditions suggested on the resource. This way, you will know what to expect from joining and interacting with the site.

If you have any questions, you can always contact the support team, and its members will help you to clarify this stuff.

Point 7: Get Ready to Receive Assistance When Needed

This has already been touched upon above. You will obtain qualitative help here basically at any time.

There are several options for getting in touch with the support. First of all, you can always use a live chat. This is the fastest variant of receiving help. The live chat is accessible 24/7 which is very convenient. By the way, you are going to be able to have a glance at the questions and answers before you come up with a certain request in this chat.

You can always choose to call or send an email to the support team in case this seems to be better for you. Simply choose the variant that satisfies you the most.

Point 8: Are You Ready for the Tournaments?

If you have heard about the tournaments for gamblers and such stuff seems to be exciting to you, you certainly should have a glance at the tournaments accessible here at GGBet. They are a source of sheer luck without any doubt! You must study the rules and the prize pool in order to know what to expect from participation.
