MMDA to Hosts the First-Ever Road to Zero Waste Summit: Leading the Way to a Circular Economy for Metro Manila

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is breaking new ground with its inaugural Road to Zero Waste Summit, a transformative event aimed at tackling Metro Manila’s waste management challenges and promoting a sustainable, circular economy.

Scheduled for November 5-6 at the Unilab Bayanihan Center in Pasig City, this summit is expected to be the largest of its kind, with free admission to the public, allowing attendees to learn, connect, and take home eco-friendly products. Registration begins at 9 AM, and events run until 7 PM on Day 1 and 5 PM on Day 2.

Under the theme “Closing the Loop Towards a Circular Economy,” the summit is set to explore and present sustainable solutions to solid waste management across the Metro. Through engaging product exhibits, interactive panel discussions, and hands-on demos, attendees will gain firsthand knowledge of waste technologies and community initiatives that can make a real impact in our urban environment. This event is also designed to foster a unified roadmap that can boost waste diversion efforts across Metro Manila, creating a sustainable future that benefits everyone.

What You Can Expect at the Summit

The two-day event will feature several dynamic sections that encourage participation, learning, and collaboration.

1. Exhibits & Demos: Innovating the Future of Waste Management

Get a glimpse of the latest advancements in recycling and waste processing, with demonstrations from leading waste recycling industries. These innovations are designed to be accessible to LGUs, barangays, and households alike, empowering communities to manage waste more efficiently. Whether it’s new composting methods, plastic upcycling, or end-of-life product processing, there’s something for everyone to explore and apply within their communities.

2. Engaging Forums: Insights from Industry Leaders and Environmental Advocates

Join discussions led by esteemed speakers who will delve into critical topics like Sustainability in the Circular Economy, Best Practices in Solid Waste Management (SWM), and Green Advocacy for Recycled Products. Each talk includes a Q&A session, allowing participants to actively engage with experts and dive deeper into waste solutions tailored to the challenges faced by Metro Manila.

3. Network Mapping: Visualizing Metro Manila’s Path to Zero Waste

The summit will provide a comprehensive view of MMDA's Road to Zero Waste strategy and how Metro Manila’s Community-Level Materials Recovery Systems (MRS) are evolving. Participants will learn about existing waste diversion points across the metro, best practices in segregation, and how they can contribute to waste reduction at the community level.

4. Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) Campaigns: Educating for Impact

A significant part of the summit is focused on public awareness. Campaigns will guide participants on effective waste segregation, resource valuation, composting techniques, plastic recycling, and end-of-life product handling. Practical and achievable steps will be shared, encouraging attendees to bring these ideas from the summit back to their workplaces and homes.

MMDA Chairman Atty. Romando S. Artes is excited about the event’s potential impact, inviting everyone to join this groundbreaking initiative. “The Road to Zero Waste Summit marks an important step in Metro Manila’s journey towards sustainability.
