FDCP Opens Call for Filipino Audiovisual Companies for Cannes Marché du Film 2023

The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) is looking for Filipino audiovisual companies involved in production, production-related activities, line production, post-production, and animation to be part of the Philippine delegation to the Marché du Film 2023, the business arm of the prestigious Cannes International Film Festival happening from May 16 to 24 in France.

Companies which will be selected by the FDCP will receive Marché du Film Market Badges which will grant their representatives access to the entirety of Cannes International Film Festival’s program of screenings and exclusive reruns, Marché du Film screenings and online platforms, one (1) year free subscription to Cinando and its professional contact details, and to the thematic speed meetings during the duration of the event.

Interested audiovisual companies must register and submit their applications through this form on or before April 15. Companies must comply with the following requirements:

● Must be a Filipino film company (production, line production, post-production, animation or services)

● Must be registered with the FDCP National Registry

● Must be willing to travel to Cannes, France for Marché du Film 2023

● Must be fully-vaccinated or had a booster shot with any of the four (4)

EU-approved vaccines: Moderna, AstraZeneca, Pfizer, and Janssen

● Must be willing to comply with necessary COVID-19 travel restrictions

The professional contact details of the chosen delegates will also be featured in the Marché du Film publications.

Marché du Film is one of the biggest film markets in the world where more than 12,000 film professionals from all over the world gather to build networks and explore co-production opportunities.

The FDCP will be having a Philippine pavilion, shared with the Singapore Film Commission, to provide a venue to Filipino delegates where they can set up meetings, discuss deals, and further expand their networks with all their foreign counterparts.

As the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) gears up for its participation in Marché du Film 2023, the business side of the Cannes Film Festival, the FDCP has officially opened its call for applications for Filipino producers to be part of the country’s delegation to one of the biggest film festivals and film markets in the world.

As part of the Agency’s project and talent development goals to provide opportunities to further expose Filipino talents to international networking platforms, the FDCP will be selecting Filipino producers who will be part of the Producers Network happening from May 17 to 22 in Cannes, France.

The Call for Producers is open to Filipino producers, excluding executive producers, line producers, associate producers, production managers, and production assistants, who qualify to the following criteria:

● Producers whose main activity is production;

● Producers who have produced within the last four (4) years at least one (1) feature-length film commercially released in a theater or commercially distributed on global video streaming platforms. Screenings during festivals will not be accepted as commercial distribution;

● Producers with project/s in development and have plans to pursue international co-production especially Asia-Europe co-production.

Eligible applicants must be registered at the FDCP National Registry and must be able to submit all the required documents and requirements to projectlab@fdcp.ph with the subject “Application for Producers Network 2023 - [SURNAME]” on or before March 31:

● Accomplished application form

● Filmography

● Proof of personal credits as a film producer (films released within the last four years)

● Intention letter

● Company profile

● Dossier of project in current development (must include financial plan)

● Copy of passport (valid for at least six months from May 2022)

● HD profile photo in JPEG format.

Selected producers will receive a Marché du Film and Producers Network accreditation sponsored by the FDCP and a PHP50,000 reimbursable stipend including flight, accommodation, and allowance subject to proper liquidation, auditing, and accounting.

The accreditation also grants selected producers the following:

● Access to Festival's screenings (upon request)

● Access to reruns of films from the Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival

● Access to Marché du Film screenings

● Access to screenings at the Marché du Film Online

● Priority badge to Market and Festival screenings

● Access to the exhibitor booths, pavilions, and program areas

● Access to Marché du Film online platform

● Free one (1) year subscription to Cinando, a premiere online network designed

for film professionals

● Access to conferences, panels, and masterclasses

● Access to Producers Network events including Opening and Closing Nights,Breakfast meetings, Co-Production Night, etc. Since 2004, the Producers Network has become a go-to gathering venue for film producers from all over the world, offering a series of meetings and events designed to create opportunities and build networks.

The Producers Network will be held as an in-person event from May 17 to 22, simultaneous with Marché du Film and Cannes International Film Festival.

PH learners receive awards at SEAMEO Science Olympiad

Filipino learners from two schools bagged awards at the 2nd Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Science Olympiad (SEAOSO) held at the Penang, Malaysia earlier this month.

Competing against at least 26 groups from 11 countries in Southeast Asia, Colegio de San Agustin Makati (CSA-Makati) and Saint Louis University (SLU) from Baguio City won the Secondary School (13-18 years old) and Primary School (7-12 years old) category, respectively.

CSA-Makati was hailed as the Overall Champion and Best Completer Finisher Awardee in their category while the delegation from SLU-Baguio received the Best Completer Finisher Award.

The learners from CSA-Makati were represented by Rafael Felipe Viterbo, Eunyou Park, Lakan Diwa Fuentes, and Jodi Vien Mariano.

Meanwhile, SLU-Baguio delegates were composed of Jamie S. Espejo, Erin Shane D. Gumanlaw, Yuhan Nayri T. Padyosan, Paul Gabriele M. Bautista, Greysean A. Ngolab, Rayne Earl H. Diaron, Lyndsay Avy E. Malibiran, Danille Thereze S. Amansec, and Lara Annika Paula E. Namoca.

The SEASO competition was composed of four levels. The first and second were individual Science and Math written exams. The third was a STEM Challenge, a group practical exam, where they were asked to create a tower that could hold a soda can. Groups were judged with parameters of cost, stability, mobility, time of completion, and height. The final level was an oral presentation of the finished product, wherein each group had to market/sell their work to a panel of judges.

SEAOSO aims to stimulate scientific thinking and knowledge exploration amongst students at secondary school levels by applying knowledge to real-life technological problem-solving skills to address multiple issues, including sustainable development.

Furthermore, it encourages young learners to pursue scientific knowledge and increases their awareness about the relationship between various science fields in their daily lives, while aiming to foster camaraderie and networking among these young learners during the event.

The event has also provided career orientation to the participants, which will encourage the latter in choosing various professions under Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) strand.

The SEAMEO Science Olympiad (SEASO) 2023 is a unique platform of inspiration and scientific knowledge stimulation for future scientists and science academicians all over Southeast Asia and beyond.

DepEd launches online portal to strengthen partner-school engagement

The Department of Education (DepEd), in collaboration with PLDT-Gabay Guro and Metro Pacific Investment Corporation, launched on Thursday the DepEd Partnership Assistance Portal (DPAP) to strengthen stakeholder engagement in schools.

“Today marks a significant first step in building better relations between our partners and schools. We hope that through this portal, we will be able to attract more civic-minded partners in the future,” Assistant Secretary for Administration Christopher Lawrence S. Arnuco said.

Spearheaded by the External Partnership Services (EPS), the program launched the portal that aims to bridge gaps between companies or organizations who are willing to adopt a school and supply them with their needs.

DPAP is also aligned with the MATATAG Agenda’s digitization program which includes improved partnership processes, accuracy, and transparency of partnership data that can be easily retrieved and accessed by DepEd offices, partners, and stakeholders.

“The DPAP is the result of the hardwork of experts, and of course, the hardworking team who enthusiastically collaborated in a bid to advance education partnerships for DepEd,” EPS Director Margarita Consolacion Ballesteros stated.

Through the system’s features, schools can create their account, post their School Improvement Plan (SIP), and tap partners who seeks to help as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

The system highlights several digitized features like the e-appointment that automates appointment setting for both partners and schools, the menu of investment that lists all of the required assistance of schools that partners can fulfill, and the partnership map that showcase the partnerships made across the country.

The launch was attended by Regional Education Support Services Division (ESSD) Chiefs and Regional Partnerships Focal Persons, government agencies, private organizations, and international and development partners, and corporate partners.

Additionally, the DPAP public site will feature stories and articles about partnership triumphs in efforts of acquiring more partners in the future. Meanwhile, EPS revealed that this is only the first phase of the program, and the Service will continue to update the portal.

The Department of Education (DepEd) vehemently condemns the alarming rate of communist rebel activities in Masbate, causing undue learning disruption in the province.

These acts of terrorism perpetrated by the New People’s Army (NPA) have caused trauma to learners and school personnel who witnessed the senseless violence.

DepEd remains defiant against these fear-mongering tactics of terrorists as the agency commits to deliver basic education to all, even in disadvantaged areas.

The DepEd Regional Office V and SDO Masbate are tasked to ensure that learning continuity shall take place. As such, there will be no blanket suspension of classes. The suspension of in-person classes and immediate shift to blended learning shall be left to the discretion of the school heads/principals, upon due assessment and proper coordination with the concerned LGU — keeping in mind the peace and order situation, as well as the mental health of learners and school personnel.

The Vice President and Secretary of Education, Sara Z. Duterte, and the Army Division Commander have open communications lines, and the latter has committed to protect our school personnel and learners in the area.

The Department supports the Philippine Army, and the VP-Secretary has also expressed her intention to visit the affected areas in Masbate once it is determined by the authorities that her presence will not disrupt ongoing operations.

A distinguished professor and biochemist, Dr. Carlito Lebrilla of the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) is also a corresponding member of the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST). He will be highlighting his research on mass spectrometry and the fundamentals of innovation for startup companies at the free inaugural iStories webinar hosted by the University of the Philippines Diliman College of Science (UPD-CS) this coming March 27.



A business born from mass spectrometry

Dr. Lebrilla’s research is focused on understanding fundamental processes in the ionization, fragmentation, and detection of ions. This enabled him to build a complex Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FTICR) mass spectrometer that marked the start of a research and teaching career centered on mass spectrometry.

Mass spectrometry is an analytical technique used to identify and quantify compounds, and determine structure and chemical properties of molecules via molecular weight determination. Chemists can use a mass spectrometer to ionize a molecular compound in gaseous form, sort the fragments, and then identify the molecule fragments based on their molecular weights. Applications of mass spectrometry include determination of rock ages, biochemical evolution of the Earth, and space explorations.

In Dr. Lebrilla’s case, his work on mass spectrometry helped him transition into the biomedical field that led him to develop methods for characterizing glycoconjugates—the biochemicals that contain carbohydrates bonded to some other compounds such as protein and lipid—in cells, animals, and humans.

Dr. Lebrilla’s further research and discoveries in mass spectrometry have led to several patents and the founding of at least five companies. “I realized there were so many problems that mass spectrometry can solve in food, in health, and even in basic fundamental biological issues. I just kept finding new ideas there, which really appealed to me,” he says in one interview with Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectronomy.




iStories: a monthly series on innovation

iStories is one of UPD-CS’s initiatives to lead more researchers and students to adopt the perception of nation-building through science, according to Dr. Ricky B. Nellas, the Associate Dean for Research, Innovation, Development, and Enterprise (ADRIDE) of the College of Science.

“Innovations, especially recent advances in the fields of data science and breakthroughs in technology, have accelerated our knowledge on relevant fields of science such as disease biology, artificial intelligence, and the knowledge-research-product pipeline. It is only paramount for us, especially young scientists, to be up to speed with current advances in science and technology. We hope that the iStories webinar series would motivate Filipino scientists to forge new collaborations in order to solve relevant and neglected local and worldwide problems, through innovation-centric research.” he explained.

iStories is a free webinar series with innovation-themed lectures, storytelling, and activities featuring local and international scientists. The initiative is aimed at igniting the creativity and inventiveness of young scientists not just from the College of Science, but from other institutes inside and outside UP.

“We started this initiative to showcase the different paths towards scientific innovations that can be emulated by our researchers and students in order to contribute to nation building,” says CS Innovation Team Head, Dr. Lerrie Ann Ipulan-Colet. The team is composed of innovation representatives from nine institutes under the UPD-CS.

'Window of opportunity' seen to clean up oil spill

Researchers urge oil spill cleanup amid calm weather


Scientists from the University of the Philippines - Diliman Marine Science Institute (UPD-CS MSI) have noted a “window of opportunity” to step up efforts to clean up the oil spill from the MT Princess Empress tanker that sank off Naujan, Occidental Mindoro, last February 28.

“Weaker winds and calmer seas allow for larger oil slicks to form because of less disturbance from waves,” the researchers noted in their latest update. Satellite data from the US National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as of March 21 showed that the floating oil had accumulated into a 37.84-square-kilometer slick—”larger than Las Piñas,” the scientists noted.

The accumulated oil, along with the improved weather, may be a boon to cleanup efforts: “Calmer seas and larger slicks should be taken as an opportunity to collect the oil in slicks near the sunken tanker using booms and skimmers and ramp up cleanup efforts to prevent the oil from spreading further,” the UPD-CS MSI said.

The researchers also warned that, with the seasonal weakening of the Amihan Northeast Monsoon, the subsequent strengthening of easterly winds may push the oil further westward through the Verde Island Passage (VIP), one of the most biodiverse regions in the world and home to thousands of unique species. With some of the highest concentrations of coastal fishes, corals, crustaceans, molluscs, seagrasses, and mangroves worldwide, the Passage is the main source of food and livelihood for millions of Filipinos.

SM Foundation aids quake-hit Türkiye, Syria

In solidarity with earthquake-hit countries Türkiye and Syria, SM Foundation Inc. (SMFI) sent aid through the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) last Feb. 27, 2023.

Represented by SM Foundation Health and Medical Programs Executive Director Connie Angeles, SMFI handed 200 units of gasoline generators to PRC to provide power to the quake-stricken Türkiye and Syria.

Additionally, the social good arm of SM also donated Php5 million to help address the needs of earthquake victims.

The aid comes after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit southeast Türkiye and northwest Syria. The disaster was followed by a magnitude 6.3 earthquake, hitting southern Turkiye, which led to additional casualties and damages.

The run aligns with SM Supermalls’ bid to make “Earth Hour, Any Hour” as participants are encouraged to adopt an eco-friendly lifestyle by running and win prizes along the way. Aside from these, SM Supermalls has been pushing to minimize its carbon footprint in support of the global green movement through various programs ranging from responsible energy consumption to investing in renewable energy.

Daughter of former flower farmers lives a vibrant life through the SM Scholarship grant

Stability is the foundation of a well-lived life. With basic needs fulfilled, people have the opportunity to develop themselves, explore various facets of life, and contribute to the welfare of the community.

When aspiring youth, especially those from low-income households, are given the chance to stand on solid ground, they readily take the chance. They utilize it as a seedbed where they can cultivate their dreams and aspirations.

One testament to this is SM scholar alumna Jonnah Jane Sacamay, who grew up in a family where stability seemed like an uncharted territory. Years back, Jonnah’s family’s main source of living was flower farming. This made them walk on a thin line as the demand for flowers was seasonal, and they were also often affected by unpredictable weather disturbances.

But while they had journeyed through life with uncertainty, they had always planted in her mind the power of education.

“Given that the nature of farming is very seasonal, our income is not stable. Aside from augmenting our daily needs, we also had to ensure that my education is secured,” Jonnah recalled.

 

Holding on to the power of education

And so, to help her family, she studied hard in grade school as soon as she learned about others who had the opportunity to pursue college through the SM College Scholarship Program. With her whole heart dedicated to learning and her eyes set on the SM scholarship, she finished high school as the class valedictorian. Once the forms were available, she immediately processed her application at the SM Store in Cebu.

“I was informed that I got accepted as an SM Scholar. From then on, a huge weight was lifted off my parents' shoulders. I could pursue my chosen degree in my chosen university,” she added.

Through the scholarship offered by the SM group through SM Foundation, she was able to focus on the development of her skills and knowledge not only in accountancy but especially in life. She became a Magna Cum Laude graduate of BS Accountancy at the University of San Carlos.

“The SM Scholarship helped me reach my dream of becoming a CPA, and this opened doors for me, enabling me to land a job that empowered me to help my family,” she said.

“My experience in retail has given me wide knowledge in different areas. With this, I always make sure that my family makes informed decisions in all aspects of life. One thing that has become a tradition among SM Cebu scholars during my time was to have an outreach program. In our own way, we were able to pay forward the help that we received from SM. It was a fulfilling experience that we could share our blessings in our own little way,” she added.

Jonnah currently serves as a Senior Accounting Manager at the SM Store, Cebu. Aside from financial security, she currently takes care of her parents’ medical expenses and lets them enjoy vibrant life experiences after retiring as flower farmers.

“Having a degree enabled me and my family to experience more in life. It paved the way for me to secure a stable job, which allowed me to travel, treat my family to a nice meal, take them shopping on special occasions, and most importantly, support my parents and their medical expenses. Aside from providing me with a scholarship grant, working in SM has provided a sense of security for me and my family,” she shared.



Opening doors to more

SM Foundation made it its goal to help create an environment where low-income families can thrive and achieve stability, just like how the SM College Scholarship Program paved ways for Jonnah and her family.

For the school year 2023-2024, the application period is open from February 1-March 31, 2023. The selected scholars may specialize in accounting, information technology, engineering, and education with full tuition and monthly allowance, including enrichment programs and activities.

SM Scholar Alumna pursues a career in SPED



Teaching surpasses the realms of jobs or professions–it encompasses service, vocation, and life mission.

Proving this day and night are millions of Filipino teachers who stand as second mothers to students. One of them is Rosalie Macaspac, an SM scholar alumna who chose to pursue a career in Special Education (SPED).




Life’s work

Choosing to teach, especially pursue SPED, is a path less travelled. Out of over 800,000 public school teachers, only about 4,000 are in SPED, and Rosalie is one of the few who took the path. For 21 years now, the SM scholar alumna has dedicated her life to teaching SPED students. She wanted to empower and give special children a voice by advocating the welfare of deaf learners.

With much dedication and determination to have the right skills for her students, she pursued graduate studies in special education and Filipino sign language at the Philippine National University and De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, respectively.

She currently teaches at the Philippine School for the Deaf in Pasay, the only government-owned institution for the deaf in the country. Here, she spearheaded the numeracy skills training program for deaf learners.

 

Embedding grit, greatness

Her journey to becoming an educator was not easy. Her parents separated when she was three years old, and her mother became the breadwinner.

“In the early years of my life as a three year old, awareness of how hard life is became a part of my growing up. I grew up with a mindset that whatever happens, I will not abandon my studies. Sensing my determination, my mother earned a living by washing and ironing clothes of our neighbors. I came to realize my mom had to wash and press thousands and thousands of clothes so I could finish my studies. But I did not pity myself. Instead, I kept a strong determination to battle on and promised my mother that she will not grow old and die as a laundry woman,” she said.

The weight on their shoulder became heavier when her mother became bedridden for half a year. Instead of slowing her down, it did the opposite. She continued her studies with much determination. With the help of her uncle, the Missionaries of Charity, and the puto bigas she sold, they could get by.

She finished primary school with good grades, and was a consistent honor student in high school, despite having one centavo allowance and rice and coffee as meals. With good standing, she had her mind set on her next goal: going to college.

“Giving up or surrendering wasn’t in my vocabulary. The strong heart of my mother was passed on to me as she was my inspiration to strive to get us out of the predicament we were in,” she stressed.

“When I was in fourth year high school, I was deep in thought of what to do to support my college education. Then, God in all His goodness, stepped in again. The Guidance Office in our school announced that the SM Foundation was offering scholarships for qualified students. I knew at that very moment that He was with me. All I had to do is to apply for the scholarship,” she recalled.

She vividly remembers sending her SM College Scholarship program application at the Customer Service of the SM in Quiapo and how she learned on May 9, 1995 that she would be interviewed for the scholarship in room 214 of the MSE Bldg. The three-digit number has since become unforgettable for her. By June 1995, Macaspac was among the SM scholars who had started their college education under the scholarship program.

According to her, the scholarship helped her become a well-rounded individual. It was the key to the realization of her dreams and paved the way to success. The activities provided by SM Foundation, such as the scholars’ assembly, the orientation, leadership training, sports fest and annual retreat, were very memorable for her.

“Looking back, the retreats, monthly meetings and being able to work in SM as an employee, followed up by our project director boosted my self-esteem and opened my world to service,” she said.

Before teaching, she first worked as a Merchandise and Planning Control-Clerk at the SM Head Office, which was then located in Calle Echague, Manila. She was hired immediately after college.

Working in DepEd has always been her dream, and she is proud of where she is today: “Since day one of my college days, I aimed to be a public-school teacher. I am happy with my work now as a High School Teacher for Deaf learners. I am so privileged that I am in this community and my heart is entwined with my students.”

“I am not ashamed to tell my colleagues that I had a humble beginning and I thank SM Foundation for putting me where I am now. I owe these blessings to SM, Henry “Tatang” Sy, SM Foundation, Ma’am Nilda Bernaldez, and my fellow SM-Scholars, most especially, my mother. They are all the instruments to why I chose to give back to a special community and dedicate my life to being an effective SPED teacher.”

In its third virtual installment, Econ No-mix will bring together top-performing high school students nationwide to promote economics and its application in real-life. In a time of rising prices for agricultural products, it is essential to learn about the various ways in which the country’s agricultural condition affects the welfare of its citizens. Hence, the theme for this year’s Econ No-Mix will focus on agricultural economics. ENM will expose and stimulate solutions from the youth for various issues surrounding the current state of agriculture in the Philippines through talks and competitions. This will serve as an avenue for the participants to learn about the state of the Philippines’ agricultural system and its relationship to the economy, as well as encourage youth participation, all the while being linked to basic economic concepts and applications that are evident in one’s daily life.

WVSU films showcased in launch of FDCP’s academic programs

Student filmmakers from West Visayas State University (WVSU) screened their cinematic works for free at Cinematheque Centres nationwide last March 18 as part of Academedia and official launch of other academic programs of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP).

WVSU students, or Taga-West, got to show their short films and documentaries, namely “Judith” by Daniel de la Cruz, “Kinatao” by Lovely Jaro, “To Those We Loved the Most” by Leander Hofileña and Chelsea Young, “Modyul, Modyul Lang” by Maria JC Emmanuelle Momblan, “What If?” by Hofileña and Aimee Barte, “Panakayon” by Francis Cabinos, and “Sa Likod Sang Lense” by John Angelo Arroyo and Mars Dela Cruz, at Cinematheque Centre Manila, Iloilo, Negros, Nabunturan, and Davao.

In “Judith,” a broadcasting student realizes the dangers of the pandemic as realities of life unfold.

“Kinatao” tackles the story of a student struggling to adapt to her online classes. A nursing sophomore goes through a life-changing experience when she literally finds herself between her neighbor’s legs.

Meanwhile, in “To Those We Loved the Most,” a working student is bent on doing his best as he struggles to manage his time between his job and his studies. Only his younger sister is left in his family.

“Modyul, Modyul Lang” is a documentary film about the realities faced by grade school pupils in public schools because of the pandemic.

“What If?” starts with a spark of curiosity as two young and ambitious minds meet and feel an instant connection, eager to explore the mysteries of life and constantly searching for the “what ifs” that can lead to new relationships and infinite possibilities.

“Panakayon” focuses on the journey of a multifaceted Taga-West bracing his way to success.

Finally, “Sa Likod Sang Lense” centers on the life of a woman as she tries to reach for her goal, follow the footsteps of her friends, and have a better future in the media industry.

The films won at the recently concluded University Days Short Filmmaking Competition 2023 at WVSU.

Members of the WVSU Film Society and Sinemaskom, led by their adviser Prof. Kareen Gancio, attended the event at Cinematheque Centre Iloilo.

Academedia, formerly known as UFlix, provides an exhibition platform for the works of student filmmakers to support and encourage them to pursue their passion for filmmaking. This month, the FDCP featured student films from WVSU and De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde.

In between the two sets of screenings for Academedia, two other programs, namely the Academic Film Society and the Student Film Assistance Program (SFAP), were launched through a forum led by FDCP Chair and Chief Executive Officer Tirso Cruz III, executive director Dan Morales, technical consultant Jose Javier “Direk Joey” Reyes, and program officers Mark John Pamintuan, Sed Arce, and Jen Torres Lopez.

The FDCP, through the SFAP, will open 25 slots per cycle to Filipino student filmmakers enrolled in academic institutions that will register to be part of the AFS. Successful applicants may receive up to 50,000 pesos worth of cash grants to help them produce their thesis films and capstone projects.

Irreplaceable marine resources of Verde Island Passage under threat from oil spill

The priceless marine resources and famously pristine beaches of the Verde Island Passage (VIP) in the Southern Tagalog region remain under threat from swaths of thick black oil from the MT Princess Empress tanker that sank off Naujan, Occidental Mindoro, last February 28.

Located between Batangas and Mindoro, the VIP is one of the most biodiverse regions in the world, home to thousands of unique species. With some of the highest concentrations of coastal fishes, corals, crustaceans, molluscs, seagrasses, and mangroves worldwide, it is the main source of food and livelihood for over seven million people. The area also encompasses Puerto Galera, whose white sand beaches are internationally-acclaimed tourist destinations that are another vital source of revenue for local communities.

Experts from the University of the Philippines - Diliman College of Science Marine Science Institute (UPD-CS MSI) have been working closely around the clock with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) alongside other universities, government agencies, and stakeholders in a race to address the oil spill and stop it from spreading.

“The VIP is home to endangered and threatened species including the critically endangered hawksbill turtle, whale sharks, manta rays, dugongs, humphead wrasses, giant groupers, and giant clams,” the UPD-CS MSI said in an update. “Damage from the oil spill may affect biodiversity (including endemic species only found in the Philippines as well as species yet to be discovered), tourism revenues, and food security in the area,” they added.

The UPD-CS MSI’s latest bulletin references a NOAA/NESDIS report based on satellite data which shows that oil was still leaking out of the sunken vessel as of March 19 and the visible oil slick is extending northwest towards the VIP.

“The Verde Island Passage represents a large portion of the country’s marine biodiversity, and is a vital resource for millions of people, past and present,” said UPD-CS MSI Associate Professor Irene Rodriguez. “If we work together, we can still hopefully safeguard it for future generations to come.”

The UPD-CS MSI is asking the public for help in monitoring the oil spill. The public is encouraged to contribute geotagged images of sightings of the MT Princess Empress oil spill through this form: https://bit.ly/MTPE_GPS. The use of a GPS-enabled phone and a GPS camera app such as “GPS Map Camera” (available on Google Play and the Apple Store) are recommended so that geotag location data can be preserved.

LPU prof vies for Lasallian Scholarum Awards

A faculty member of the Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) Manila has been selected as one of the finalists in the 2023 Lasallian Scholarum Awards.

Seymour Barros Sanchez, who handles broadcasting, journalism, and multimedia arts subjects at the LPU Manila – College of Arts and Sciences, has been shortlisted under the LSA’s Outstanding Published Feature Article on Youth and Education in a Nationally Circulated Publication category.

“I am pleased to inform you that one of your articles is among the finalists of the Lasallian Scholarum Awards, De La Salle University’s flagship program for recognizing exemplary media coverage of youth and education stories,” DLSU Strategic Communications Office Executive Director Johannes Leo Badillo informed Sanchez via email.

Sanchez’s article “Regional student filmmakers stand out in climate advocacy film fest,” which was published in BusinessMirror last July 31, 2022 under its Tony&Nick section, featured the winners of the Klima Film Festival, a joint initiative by the Climate Change Commission and the Oscar M. Lopez Center.

Aside from being a freelance writer and a professional lecturer, Sanchez is also a filmmaker, content and creative producer, technical consultant, and a former producer for news and current affairs programs.

LSA, with the theme “Youth: Represent,” aims to capture the youth’s voice in saying, “We are here.” It is also geared towards inspiring members of the media to put the youth and education sector in the center of national discussion. In its 18th year, LSA continues to highlight stories that champion both sectors.

The annual recognition for the media covers five categories across various channels from print and online to television. Other categories include Outstanding Feature Story on DLSU, Outstanding Published Feature Article on Youth and Education in a School Organ, Outstanding Online Feature Article on Youth and Education, and Outstanding Video Feature Story on Youth and Education.

The organizers collaborated with an independent media-monitoring agency for the initial screening of entries throughout the year. The entries went through a preliminary selection of a respected team of faculty and communication experts before the finalists were turned over to an external board of judges.

In addition, the Outstanding Media Personality Award will also be presented for the first time as part of the merit-based awards program. The award will be given “to a media practitioner who showed admirable attributes, serving as a role model to journalists-in-the-making.” Lasallian student journalists teamed up with the DLSU Student Media Office in choosing the recipient of the prize.

Awardees in the professional categories will receive a sculpture uniquely designed and crafted by renowned artist Toym De Leon Imao.

The LSA awarding ceremony returns as a physical event after being held online for the past two years. The finalists are expected to attend the event together with DLSU administrators and selected students on March 22 at the Br. Andrew Gonzalez Hall, DLSU Manila.

Money and finance are extremely important in today’s day and age. We have a drive to earn, save, and spend, but we cannot do these things if we are not wise. Learning the whys and hows of finance and economics can be as simple or as challenging as can be; however, it does not mean it is entirely impossible to understand.

Diving into the world of finance may seem like the biggest leap in life, so why not take that first step?

Everything about finance cannot be learned all at once. Nevertheless, mentors serve as guidance and exist for that exact reason. These people have been in the industry for a notable period of time, so imagine how much knowledge they have, as well as what tips and tricks they have up their sleeves. Aligned with the great words of Bob Proctor, “A mentor is someone who sees more talent and ability within you than you see in yourself and helps bring it out of you.” They have a myriad of ideas and wisdom to pass on to society, especially the youth, in order to guide them to achieve their financial goals, while also teaching them how to be financially competitive.

However, not everyone has opportunities to meet these eclectic individuals or know where to find them. So, what now?

With everything that has been said thus far, this is the whole reason why the Management of Financial Institutions Association (MaFIA), an accredited professional student organization of DLSU, will be hosting the Global Finance Convention 2023, with the theme: ‘Coding Limitless Possibilities’. The last GFC was back in 2018, and now it’s back and will be better than ever! 

This time around, the event aims to provide the youth with a comprehensive overview of finance and its economic impact, with the intention of empowering them to be financially competitive. Alongside this, the convention focuses on increasing the knowledge of youths on topics such as business, financial goals, financial literacy, wide-known market trends, and many more. Ticket fees for External Partners range from ₱210 - ₱250. 

The event will take place at Natividad Fajardo-Rosario Gonzales Auditorium (Br. Andrew Gonzales Hall, 18th Floor) on March 25th from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Don’t miss out on the opportunity! Citizens’ photos of oil spill can help marine scientists save our seas

Researchers are banking on Filipinos’ inherent love of photography and social media, bringing everyone together through collaborative “citizen science” to help save the country’s precious marine resources from the ravages of a recent disastrous oil spill.

The University of the Philippines - Diliman Marine Science Institute (UPD-CS MSI) is rallying the public to use their mobile phones to help get a better idea of the extent of the oil spill from the tanker MT Princess Empress, which sank last February 28 off the coast of Naujan, Occidental Mindoro.

The simple act of taking a photo and uploading it along with the time and location will be used by the researchers as starting points for their forecast models, complemented by data from other sources including satellite images and computer simulations. “It’s as easy as uploading your favorite photo to social media,” said UPD-CS MSI Associate Professor Irene Rodriguez. “We need continuous monitoring for the presence of oil along the coasts to inform our models. All you have to do is send us your photo of the oil spill, along with when and where the picture was taken.”

The UPD-CS MSI’s team of experts has been working closely around the clock with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) alongside other universities, government agencies, and stakeholders in a race to address the Mindoro oil spill and stop it from spreading.

Such public-sourced initiatives, often called “citizen science” and “citizen journalism,” are regularly used around the world to tap into the local knowledge of people on the ground to help build up a better understanding of oftentimes complex, large-scale phenomena. The US Geological Survey’s (USGS’s) “Did You Feel It?”, for example, aggregates public responses and social media mentions to assess and understand the impact of recent earthquakes. National Geographic Magazine also lists several citizen science initiatives in which even gradeschool kids can participate, from reef monitoring to space exploration.

Meanwhile, citizen journalism has long been a staple of online reportage in the Philippines as far back as 2009, when local news websites had to rely heavily on social media posts for updates on the aftermath of Typhoon Ondoy.
