Mulberries are easy-to-grow trees that produce sweet, juicy berries in early summer. In fact, I was able to grow one at our own backyard in Montalban. Here are some tips for growing mulberries:
Choose the right location: Mulberries prefer well-drained soil and full sun. Choose a location that gets at least six hours of direct sunlight per day.
Plant in the right season: The best time to plant mulberry trees is in the spring or fall. Planting in the summer can stress the tree and reduce its chances of survival.
Provide adequate space: Mulberry trees can grow up to 30 feet tall and wide, so make sure you have enough space for the tree to grow.
Water regularly: Mulberry trees need regular watering, especially during the first few years of growth. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
Fertilize sparingly: Mulberry trees don't require a lot of fertilizer, but you can use a balanced fertilizer once or twice a year if you want to give them a boost.
Prune as needed: Mulberry trees don't need much pruning, but you can remove any dead or diseased branches as needed.
Protect from birds: Mulberries are a favorite of birds, so you may need to protect your tree with netting to prevent them from eating all the berries.
With these tips, you should be able to grow a healthy and productive mulberry tree in your garden. Though I should also mention that I was able to grow only one out of the 4 rooted cuttings that I planted at two locations. So there are other factors that could have contributed to the reasons why one was successful and the others were not.
