Rody Vera’s Walang Aray is Severino Reyes’ Walang Sugat Born Anew

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA), makes a big comeback to live performances with an all-new original Filipino musical, Walang Aray.

Playwright Rody Vera reveals that Walang Aray was originally written in 2007 as a screenplay commissioned by Jun Reyes, the award-winning filmmaker, veteran advertising director, and founder of top creative content agency Indie.Go Media. Fittingly so, Reyes is the great-grandson and creative heir of Severino Reyes, who wrote the famous 1898 zarzuela Walang Sugat, on which Walang Aray is based.

The Indie.Go Media film project, however, did not push through as originally planned, as Vera tells, “I had so much fun writing the screenplay, but unfortunately, the cost of doing such a wonderful musical film was much too high. The piece was shelved and for more than ten years it remained in the ‘baul’.”

In 2018, Vera presented Walang Aray to PETA, and Artistic Director Maribel Legarda suggested having original music for the show instead of the initial plan of using OPM songs. “At first, I was a bit reluctant, saying that choosing which OPM song to sing was integrally part of the whole style and tone of the screenplay. But when Vince Lim churned out his first few songs, I was conVinced,” Vera enthused. After much adjustment and revisions to translate the musical from screen to stage, Walang Aray was first performed in a PETA Lab show in 2018 and 2019 under the direction of Ian Segarra with original music and musical direction by Vince Lim, generating an enthusiastic and positive response from audiences and critics alike.

Vera’s updated stage version of Walang Aray is literature and history brought to life in the most cutting-edge and entertaining way, as the musical masterfully blends the timelessly old with modern terminology, funk and pop music, and tongue-in-cheek comedy.

It is a farce and a tribute with so many layers: the musical form of the zarzuela that has been labeled as “outdated” has been reinvented for new audiences without compromising its roots, and the historical narrative also resonates with the present time.

Vera states that amidst the humor and entertainment, Walang Aray also provides commentary on the institutions of old. But is it just poking fun at the villains of our history? Not quite, because the institutions placed under farcical scrutiny in Walang Aray are still here, though modified or configured differently.

“The hypocrisy, the power trips, hidden desires, deceptions, and idiosyncrasies — they’re all still here. And I think that’s exactly what makes this ‘slight’ adjustment from the original zarzuela relatable to us today,” Vera explains.

As the first show to hit the PETA stage after the COVID-19 pandemic, Walang Aray represents the hope that theater can now enter a new chapter after years of global tragedy and hardships. “The pandemic was a long, terrible nightmare and now, we’re back on track ready to fulfill what we all planned – and more!,” says Vera. “While we’re aware these things indeed happened and may happen again, we’re also here to remind people that theater, always... ALWAYS dies and is born anew.”

Walang Aray celebrates the joys and victories of Filipinos, while remembering our colorful history in the theater, and against our oppressors.

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Mr. Galang will give a keynote presentation on Coins’ Web3 initiatives on Thursday morning

Coins.ph, the Philippines’ leading digital wallet provider and crypto exchange platform, is sponsoring this week’s Philippine Blockchain Week 2022 conference, which is running from Nov. 28 - Dec. 4 at Newport World Resorts in Manila.

On Thursday, Dec. 1, Coins.ph Managing Director Eprom Galang will give a plenary keynote presentation entitled “Your Gateway to Web3” from 11:55 am-12:05 pm in Ballroom C, Newport World Resorts, Manila in which he will outline Coins’ initiatives to build a bridge between Web2 and Web3.

Coins’ Web3 offerings include the recently-launched Coins Arcade, which enables users to play Web2 and Web3 games directly in the Coins app and store the tokens they earn in a dedicated Coins Game Wallet. Coins Arcade launched earlier this month with support for MetaDerby, a play-to-earn game built on the Avalanche blockchain network that lets users earn $HOOF tokens. Coins Arcade will be rolling out many more Web2 and Web3 game titles in the coming months.

The inaugural Philippine Blockchain Week is the ultimate Web2 to Web3 event, featuring curated talks from international thought leaders on how blockchain is disrupting the way the world lives, works, and plays. Day 2 of the event (Wednesday) is dedicated to Blockchain and Fintech, while Day 3 (Thursday) is focused on the Metaverse and Web3.

Journalists who wish to attend the conference can fill out this media accreditation form, which is also available through the conference website.

Japan tech unicorn Sansan to open Global Development Center in Philippines

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Cebu center will establish an international-standard technology development environment to strengthen the company’s global product development

Sansan, Inc., a Japanese provider of cloud-based solutions that promote digital transformation (DX) and reshape how we work, today announces the establishment of its new cutting-edge Sansan Global Development Center in Cebu, Philippines. The Center will strengthen the development of Sansan’s product functions for global markets by establishing a global-standard technology development environment.

Sansan aims to accelerate its overseas product expansion, including its namesake sales DX solution Sansan and online invoice receiving solution Bill One, with a focus on Southeast Asia. Through its overseas subsidiary Sansan Global Pte. Ltd. (“Sansan Global”), the company has been rapidly expanding availability of the Sansan and Bill One solutions in countries including Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia.

To accelerate its global ambitions, Sansan must increasingly respond to the needs of local customers in each country. This will require greater investments into multi-language support teams and development of unique functions in line with each country’s laws and regulations, systems, business customs, and workflows.

Fujikura Shigemoto, Executive Officer, Head of Overseas Establishment Team of Sansan, Inc., said: “We decided to establish Sansan Global Development Center, Inc. in Cebu to strengthen our product development for overseas markets. The Philippines is actively attracting and supporting global IT companies, and Cebu is known for its high-level IT education and large pool of talented engineers. The Center’s opening will let us strengthen regional recruitment of engineers and improve our development environment overseas.”

The Center is scheduled to open its doors in early 2023 with Mr. Fujikura. Under its mission of “turning encounters into innovation” and vision to “become business infrastructure” for companies around the world, Sansan will continue developing world-class products in both its home market of Japan and internationally.

UPD-CS graduates help cement UP’s lead in Asia

One out of every ten graduates of the University of the Philippines - Diliman (UPD) is from the College of Science (UPD-CS), underscoring the latter’s essential contributions to the University’s standing as the country's premier institution of higher learning.

In 2022 alone, UPD-CS accounted for 331 or 9.52% of UPD’s 3,475 graduates. This helped UP as a whole rank 87th in Asia and 18th in Southeast Asia in the recently-released 2023 Quacquerelli Symonds (QS) Asia University Rankings, ahead of other Philippine universities. To help maintain and improve UP’s premiere status, UPD-CS is mandated to produce internationally-recognized graduates, institutional partnerships, and research output.

“The College aims to collaborate with different NGOs, private entities, SUCs, HEI, and local and international institutions in the scientific community to promote and mobilize scientific experts,” explained UPD-CS’s Associate Dean for Research, Innovation, Development, and Enterprise Ricky Nellas. “This will serve as a training ground for UP experts, students, and staff to fill network engagement between researchers.”

UPD-CS also has 18 active international research collaborations, five of which started just this year, plus a further 18 ongoing local partnerships. These were also taken into consideration in UP’s QS score and subsequent ranking.

Moreover, UPD-CS aims to produce industry and government leaders as it transforms itself into a leading research institution in Asia. Apart from strengthening the College’s research projects and partnerships, having a multi-tier support system for researchers would help achieve these goals, according to AD Nellas.

“This system should include not only financial coverage, but also holistic activities for the physical, mental, and psychological well-being of researchers,” he said. “Moreover, CS and the University should partner with lawmakers to improve taxation for researchers and lobby for tax exemptions for the research-derived honoraria and financial incentives. Alternatively, an increase in research honoraria can be implemented in lieu of tax breaks.”

AD Nellas added that the most crucial step UP should take is to improve the procurement process needed to establish, operate, and maintain scientific infrastructure and facilities. Restructuring the procurement pipeline for research activities, simplifying requirements, and providing exceptions for specialized needs would help reorganize the procurement process.

“These would greatly accelerate research and alleviate the administrative workloads of both project staff and the faculty. CS and the University could also allow and lobby for the deregulation of research-related contracts to allow our researchers greater flexibility, make procurement efficient, and improve the working conditions of staff and personnel,” he concluded.

A Gathering of the Philippines’ Brightest:TOFIL Laureates Summit set for January 2023

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Sci. Dpl. Glenn Banaguas (center) is flanked by TOFIL Chairman Atty. Rogelio Garcia (left) and PACU Pres. Anthony Tamayo (right) at the signing of Memorandum of Collaboration for “THE LAUREATES: The Outstanding Filipino (TOFIL) Summit,” to be held on January 17, 2022. Looking on are officials from partner agencies, the CI Senate Philippines, the ECCRI, ANSA Foundation, and the PACU.

The Outstanding Filipino (TOFIL) Foundation has just entered into an agreement with the Environmental and Climate Change Research Institute (ECCRI) and the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities (PACU) to bring together some of the Philippines’ brightest minds from across multiple business sectors and academic disciplines to address hurdles in the way of the country’s sustainable development.

Dubbed “THE LAUREATES: The Outstanding Filipino (TOFIL) Summit,” the event will be held on January 17, 2023, and will be attended by thought and industry leaders, academics, and other prime stakeholders. Under the theme, “Today’s Act, Tomorrow’s Impact,” the Summit aims to build a collective response to pandemic concerns; help communities distinguish fact from fiction in the new information ecosystem; recommend resilient and sustainable solutions to issues of interest to PACU and its stakeholders; and create a multidisciplinary network to address pressing concerns and threats to the country through innovative approaches and solutions.

The Terms of Reference for the Summit were formally signed recently by TOFIL Chairman Atty. Rogelio Garcia, PACU President Dr. Anthony Jose M. Tamayo, and ECCRI President and Science Diplomat Glenn S. Banaguas.

For over 30 years, The Outstanding Filipino (TOFIL) Award has been given out by the JCI Senate of the Philippines and the ANSA Foundation in recognition of the exemplary achievements of men and women aged 41 and older. The TOFIL Award is touted as “the Nobel Prize of the Philippines.”

Awardees are selected as much for their accomplishments as for the “strength of their character and integrity; and the impact of their achievements on their field of work, public welfare, and national development.”

Himself a TOFIL Laureate, Sci. Dpl. Banaguas founded the ECCRI in 2010 and spearheaded the institute's flagship program, Climate Smart Philippines: Science for Service, to bring scientific experts and stakeholders together in addressing disasters and preventing losses from climate change and other hazards. For these initiatives, Banaguas received the prestigious global UN Sasakawa Award in 2022.

SSS announces release dates for the 13th month and December 2022 pensions

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

The Social Security System (SSS) announced on Thursday that its pensioners will be receiving their 13th month and December 2022 pensions as early as the first week of December 2022.

SSS President and Chief Executive Officer Michael G. Regino said the pension fund is set to release around P29.74 billion covering 3.36 million pensioners.

“This year, we have also pushed for the early crediting of the 13th month and December 2022 pensions so that our pensioners can withdraw them ahead of the holiday rush,” Regino said.

Today, December 1, 2022, the SSS will release the first batch of the said pensions covering pensioners with dates of contingency within the first to the 15th day of the month.

The second batch, on the other hand, is set to be released on December 4, 2022, covering pensioners with dates of contingency within the 16th up to the last day of the month.

Since December 4, 2022, falls on a Sunday, pensioners who are set to receive their pensions on the said date can expect that these will be credited to their account starting on the last working day before it, which is December 2, 2022.

Meanwhile, the SSS requested its accredited non-PESONet participating banks to release the said pensions to their SSS-pensioner clients no later than December 4, 2022. It has also requested the Philippine Postal Corporation to expedite the delivery of the checks of its pensioners who are receiving their pensions in this manner.

“Since December 1988, we have been granting our pensioners the 13th month pension, which is equivalent to their respective monthly pensions. This additional financial assistance or Christmas gift is our way of thanking them for their support to the SSS during their working years,” Regino said.

Pensioners who are qualified to receive the 13th month pension are SS retirement pensioners, and SS and Employees’ Compensation (EC) survivor, and total disability pensioners, including partial disability pensioners with pension duration of not less than 12 months.

December 1 marks the 34th commemorative celebration of World AIDS Day.

Miss Universe titleholders Pia Wurtzbach and Catriona Gray join forces in championing health equity to end HIV.

In a video entitled: “We Stand With You,” posted on LoveYourselfTV, the Youtube channel of LoveYourself, Inc., Wurtzbach and Gray are shown side by side to amplify the community’s voice against misinformation, social stigma, and discrimination, and all other issues that come with it.

Gray said, “Forty years have passed, and the HIV epidemic still lingers with us, and the more it stays, the more it affects us all.” She also mentioned that solutions to fight HIV infection are already available but with limited reach.

Wurtzbach explained, “The advances in science offer us protection against HIV, no matter our status.” She highlighted the available HIV prevention methods, such as condoms with water-based lube, Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP).

The beauty queen ambassadors stressed that HIV treatment works and there is a need to enable a safer society for people living with HIV (PLHIV) to access treatment and achieve an undetectable viral load status.

“Undetectable is equal to Untransmittable. U equals U,” the ambassadors simultaneously said, which is a global tagline demonstrating that with adherence to treatment, PLHIV cannot pass on the virus to their sexual partners.

Besides Wurtzbach and Gray, other LoveYourself ambassadors like Miss Universe Philippines 2022 Celeste Cortesi, Miss International Philippines 2022 Hannah Arnold, Mister Gay World 2021 Joel Rey Carcasona, Miss Universe 2019 Gazini Ganados, and many more community advocates all over the Philippines stand with the community to raise awareness about the advocacy.

DOST-SEI launches FINDING NORTH IN STEM: A Career Guidebook for Students

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Discovering career roadmap in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is made easier for the Filipino youth through the inauguration of a STEM Career Guidebook, the first in the country, courtesy of the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI).

In celebration of the 2022 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW), the DOST-SEI launched FINDING NORTH IN STEM – a handy reference and assessment tool carefully crafted and designed to guide Filipino students into the STEM careers that fit their skills and interests.

Featuring a variety of career specializations that go beyond the popular fields, the Guidebook aims to develop a culture of science and technology among the youth, promote STEM education, and popularize careers that are unfamiliar to many. It specifically highlights STEM courses that are covered by the DOST-SEI scholarship programs for both undergraduate and graduate levels.

The launching event held on the 24th of November 2022 is a product of a fruitful collaboration between the DOST-SEI and the University of the Philippines National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP NISMED) through the Foundation for the Promotion of Science and Mathematics Education and Research (FPSMER). This joint effort to produce the useful material transpires under the project “#Push4Science: Maging DOST Scholar Ka! Campaign”, which aims to promote STEM careers and DOST Scholarship Programs to priority municipalities.

UP NISMED representatives, spearheaded by Director Dr. Sheryl Monterola, led the demonstration on how to navigate on the Guidebook. A toolkit for teachers and a guide for parents will also be available soon. The toolkit aims to empower the teachers with the right knowledge to help their students go over the guidebook, while the quick guide hopes to introduce STEM to parents.

The DOST-SEI trusts that the STEM Career Guidebook would serve as a solid compass that could enlighten, comfort, and reassure clarity in the future of the Filipino youth
“We envision that this guidebook will allow the students to realize their inner potential in STEM and help the country attain a critical mass of science and technology professionals. We hope that it will spark interest among the youth to take part in the highly competitive and tech-driven world and contribute towards elevating our country’s adaption to this new era,” said Dr. Josette Biyo, Director of DOST-SEI.

Dr. Monterola also thanked DOST-SEI for the opportunity to prepare the youth to be more pro-active in choosing their own career paths. “This guidebook is not only for students already interested in STEM, but this book will also be impactful to those who are not yet certain about which path to take in college. This is our way of extending our hands to the future, making sure that we really participate in building the critical mass of productive workforce in science.”

It is hoped that the STEM Career Guidebook could remind the Filipino youth about the essence of a careful career planning and challenge them to thread in the right direction.

The guidebook is accessible through the official website of the DOST-SEI at https://bit.ly/3ilxOK1. (30)

PLDT Enterprise Showcases the Limitless Potential of Artificial Intelligence at GO CEBU Grand Exp

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Vice President and Head for Enterprise Innovation, Business Development, Consulting, and Presales, Melvin Jeffrey Chan, presents during the Go Cebu Grand Expo and Exhibit

PLDT Enterprise, the B2B arm of the largest fully integrated telco provider in the country PLDT, partnered with the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) to present this year’s Cebu Business Months (CBM) 2022. The CBM 2022 is a year-long series of events and programs that gather stakeholders from the private and public sectors in the areas of Entrepreneurship and ICT-BPM, among others.

Bannering the keynote panel at the GO CEBU Grand Expo and Exhibit, Vice President & Head of PLDT Enterprise Innovations, Business Development, Consulting & Presales, Melvin Jeffrey Chan, enlightened guests on the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how it helps optimize business operations through technology.

According to Chan, AI benefits organizations with faster, data-driven decision-making, where “AI improves core processes by increasing both the speed and accuracy while being able to provide additional insights for strategic initiatives.”

Chan adds how AI has already helped transform many industries, without consumers being aware of it, such as aerospace and defense for drone navigation, AI-designed apparel, self-driving vehicles, smart robots, wearables, among others.

With the limitless potential of AI for businesses, it reduces human errors, increases efficiency in the workflow, and provides safer handling of hazardous tasks. It also lets AI handle mundane tasks whereas business owners can focus on their strategic business initiatives.

According to a recent study by GlobalData, AI will have a global market potential of US$135.8 billion and 14% CAGR by 2026. “It is going to be a catalyst for business and digital transformation, and the possibilities are going to be boundless,” adds Chan.

For those who would like to discuss more in the subject matter of AI or are interested in co-developing or co-innovating in the general technology spaces, Chan encouraged them to reach out to PLDT Enterprise.

This is the 26th CBM celebration hosted by the CCCI. This year’s theme is “GO Cebu!” with the tagline ‘Realign, Reinforce, and Rebuild’ anchored on the vision of generating beneficial results despite challenging times.

Coins.ph CEO Wei Zhou: Crypto Payments Will Usher in Financial Inclusion in the Philippines

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Zhou told the attendees that crypto can unveil a new era of financial inclusion in the Philippines and make payments and remittances cheap and accessible for all.

Wei Zhou, CEO of Coins.ph, ("Coins" or the "Company"), the Philippines' leading digital asset wallet and crypto exchange platform, appeared on stage at the Law x Tech and Capital Summit held on Nov. 11, 2022, where he shared his vision for how crypto can anchor embedded finance and usher in a new era of financial inclusion in the Philippines and beyond.

The Law x Tech and Capital Summit attracted many of the top leaders in the legal and financial sectors as well as industry regulators from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, the Department of Information Communications & Technology, and the Securities and Exchange Commission. At the event, Zhou delivered a keynote speech on the emerging trends in blockchain, cryptocurrencies and digital assets. He delved into the rise of the Philippines as a global crypto hub and outlined the measures needed to take blockchain adoption to the next level.

“There are a lot of interesting trends emerging here in the Philippines. We have among the healthiest demographic trends in the world, the second-largest population in Southeast Asia, and are among the top 15 globally. We also have one of the largest English-speaking populations in the world. These are massive advantages for us and allow us to become not just followers in global tech trends but also step up to take a leadership position,” Zhou stated.

This surging crypto adoption puts the Philippines in a prime position to advance its goals of financial inclusion through crypto-powered embedded finance, Zhou told the audience. Crypto payments can complement mobile payments, which are already near-ubiquitous in the country.

The Philippines also ranks in the global top three for remittances, receiving over $30 billion in 2021. However, cross-border payments continue to be expensive, inaccessible and take several days. Coins has continued to set the pace in the remittances sector, a market that’s expected to grow an astonishing 620% by 2024. The Coins app allows users to send and receive both digital currencies and pesos instantly from everywhere across the globe at a low cost.

“Crypto can transform this sector, providing instant, affordable and secure remittances to every Filipino,” Zhou told the attendees.

Zhou further explained the importance of regulations for a nascent digital asset industry that’s still finding its feet. “Regulation is the most important topic for crypto over the next few years. This is because technology has run so far ahead, and adoption has followed, leaving regulators scrambling to catch up. I think here in the Philippines, we’re actually quite progressive. Our regulators have provided the two most important things - certainty and transparency. I think we can take a leadership position here in the Philippines and this is what I hope to do with Coins.”

Professional stealers: opportunistic scammers targeting users of Steam, Roblox, and Amazon in 111 countries

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Group-IB, one of the global leaders in cybersecurity, has identified 34 Russian-speaking groups that are distributing info-stealing malware under the stealer-as-a-service model. The cybercriminals use mainly Racoon and Redlinestealers to obtain passwords for gaming accounts on Steam and Roblox, credentials for Amazon and PayPal, as well as users' payment records and crypto wallet credentials.

In the first seven months of 2022, the gangs collectively infected over 890,000 user devices and stole over 50 mln passwords. All the identified groups orchestrate their attacks through Russian-language Telegram groups, although they mainly target users in the United States, Brazil, India, Germany, and Indonesia. In 2022, info-stealing malware has grown into one of the most serious digitalthreats.

Classiscam graduates

By tracking the evolution of the popular scam scheme Classiscam, Group-IB Digital Risk Protection analysts revealed how some "workers" (low-rank online scammers) started shifting to a more dangerous criminal scheme that involves distributing info stealers. Moreover, the illicit business of stealers, which is coordinated via Telegram groups, uses exactly the same operational model as Classiscam

An info stealer is a type of malware that collects credentials stored in browsers (including gaming accounts, email services, and social media), bank card details, and crypto wallet information from infected computers, and then sends all this data to the malware operator. After a successful attack, the scammers either obtain money themselves using the stolen data, or they sell the stolen information in the cybercriminal underground. According to Group-IB, stealers are one of the top threats to watch in the coming year. The threat actor responsible for the most recent attack on Uberpurchased the credentials compromised with the Racoon stealer.

According to the Group-IB Digital Risk Protection team, (part of the Unified Risk Platform), the mass Telegram groups and bots designed to distribute info stealers first appeared in early 2021. By investigating a number of accounts, Group-IB analysts were able to confirm that members of several scam groups that previously participated in the Classiscam scheme began using stealers. In 2021 and 2022, Group-IB experts identified 34 active groups on Telegram. On average, such info stealer distribution groups have around 200 active members.

The most popular stealer among the groups examined by Group-IB is RedLine, which is used by 23 out of 34 gangs. Racoon ranks second: 8 groups employ this tool. Custom stealers are used in 3 communities. Administrators usually give workers both RedLine and Racoon in exchange for a share of the stolen data or money. However, the malware in question is offered for rent on the dark web for $150-200 per month. Some groups use 3 stealers at the same time, while others have only one stealer in their arsenal.

Having switched from scamming users of classified websites to stealers, some threat actors reproduced not only the hierarchy and model of Classiscam, but also its technical capabilities. In particular, Telegram bots that generate malicious content, communication between members, and all their shady accounting. The tasks of workers, the scammers of the lower-ranks, have also changed — they must now drive traffic to bait scam websites impersonating well-known companies and convince victims to download malicious files. Cybercriminals embed links for downloading stealers into video reviews of popular games on YouTube, into mining software or NFT files on specialized forums and direct communication with NFT artists, and into lucky draws and lotteries on social media.

Telegram Stealers world tour

Group-IB estimates that between March 1 (when Group-IB started researching the scheme) and December 31, 2021 stealers operated via Telegram groups were able to compromise 538,000 devices. In the first 7 months of 2022, Telegram stealers were found to be almost twice more active infecting more than 890,000 devices in 111 countries.

The top 5 most often attacked countries in 2022 were the United States, Brazil, India, Germany, and Indonesia with 91,565, 86,043, 53,988, 40,750, and 35,345 infected devices respectively.

List of countries in Asia Pacific by the number of infected devices include India, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam and Singapore. In India for example, from March - December 2021, the operators of the stealers in question infected 19,249 devices. In the first seven months of 2022, the number grew to 53,988. Scammers were able to retrieve 4,547,020 passwords, 4,657 sets of payment records, and 4,428 sets of crypto wallet information such as credentials, seed phrases, etc.

Indonesia closely follows with a total of 35,345 infected devices and where scammers were able to retrieve 2,372,893 passwords. The Philippines recorded a total of 31, 745 infected devices and Vietnam with a total of 22,739 devices infected and scammers retrieving 2,032,278 passwords. Australia had 5,794 devices infected and 549,640 passwords retrieved by scammers. Singapore saw 2,179 devices infected, with 185,689 passwords retrieved.

According to the analysis of Telegram groups, for the last 10 months of 2021 cybercriminals collected 27,875,879 sets of passwords, 1,215,532,572 cookie files, 56,779 sets of payment records, and data from 35,791 crypto wallets. In the first 7 months of 2022, threat actors stole 50,352,518 passwords, 2,117,626,523 cookie files, details of 103,150 bank cards, and data from 113,204 crypto wallets. The underground market value of just the stolen logs and compromised card details is around $5.8 million, Group-IB experts estimate.

According to Group-IB, in 2021, threat actors worldwide most frequently collected PayPal account credentials (more than 25%) and Amazon credentials (more than 18%). In 2022, the most targeted services are the same, namely PayPal (more than 16%) and Amazon (more than 13%). However, over the course of the year, cases of stealing passwords for gaming services (Steam, EpicGames, Roblox) in the logs have increased almost five-fold.

"The influx of a huge number of workers into the popular scam Classiscam — which Group-IB's Unified Risk Platformidentified, at its peak, comprised over a thousand criminal groups and hundreds of thousands of fake websites — has led to criminals competing for resources and looking for new ways to make profits," says Ilia Rozhnov, head of Group-IB's Digital Risk Protection in the Asia Pacific. "The popularity of schemes involving stealers can be explained by the low entry barrier. Beginners do not need to have advanced technical knowledge as the process is fully automated and the worker's only task is to create a file with a stealer in the Telegram bot and drive traffic to it. For victims whose computers become infected with a stealer, however, the consequences can be disastrous."

To minimize potential risks, Group-IB Digital Risk Protection experts recommend that users refrain from downloading software from suspicious sources, use isolated virtual machines or alternative operating systems for installation, avoid saving passwords in browsers, and regularly clear browser cookies. To prevent digital risks and unwanted consequences, companies should take a proactive approach to their brand's digital security and use modern technologies for monitoring and response, such as Group-IB's Digital Risk Protection.

SM provides learners with environment conducive to learning

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

More than just an area where students gather to hold classes, a school environment plays a vital role in learners’ cognitive development. Research has shown that with an environment conducive to learning, students increase their attention and focus, and they are more motivated to practice higher-level critical thinking skills.

Adamant to provide students with venues where they can fully hone their skills and knowledge, SM Foundation (SMFI)—the corporate social responsibility arm of the SM group—cemented its partnership with the Department of Education (DepED) in 2002 through DepEd’s Adopt-A-School Program.

Through this, SMFI builds SM school buildings in grassroot communities, complete with basic furniture and equipment. More so, SMFI integrates specialized features to each SM school building to address the unique needs of their school recipients—some received rooms dedicated as a guidance office, a clinic, a mini-library, and some even got a water tank and a handwashing facility.

To date, SMFI has turned over more than 100 SM school buildings nationwide with the help of its partners, which share the same aspirations for the Filipino learners and teachers. One of which is the SM Prime Holdings (SMPH) - one of the largest integrated property developers in Southeast Asia. Since the project’s inception, over 90 SM school buildings out of the more than 100 were built through the social good collaboration with SM Prime.

Infrastructure for calamity prone areas

SMFI and SMPH ensure that the SM school buildings incorporate a disaster resilient design to guarantee the safety of the students, teachers, and other school personnel. Emergency lights at both staircases, and fire and earthquake alarm bells are also installed.

Principal Joji Buelvo, school principal of Basud Elementary School (BES) in Sorsogon City, shared the state of their school community before they accepted the fully furnished SM school building from SMFI and SM Prime in 2021: “Ang aming paaralan ay saksi sa maraming kalamidad. Kaya karamihan ng mga classrooms ay may kalumaan na, ang mga kisame ay malapit na bumagsak—talagang hindi na conducive for learning.”

“But through your [SMFI and SM Prime] donation, our BES learners now have a haven where we can nurture their young minds to be academically-ready and well-rounded members of the community,” Buelvo further expressed.

Addressing classroom shortage

The continuous rapid growth of the country’s population is taking a toll on schools—leaving the students, even the teachers, with overcrowded classrooms which affect learners’ academic performance.

In 2012, the Banisil National High School (BNHS) in General Santos City received its first SM school building. But being the only secondary school in Barangay Tambler, BNHS records a significant increase in their enrollment per year. With this challenge, SM Foundation decided to provide another edifice of hope for the sub-urban Muslim community in 2021, addressing the growing needs of BNHS learners and teachers.

BNHS then principal Shiela Balbon said, “Yung patuloy na paglobo ng population every year ay talagang naging suliranin namin.”

“Pagpasok ng 2020, nagkaroon ng COVID. So naisip ko baka hindi na matuloy. Pero itong SM Foundation, walang pande-pandemya sa kanila. Talagang desidido silang matugunan yung pangangailangan sa classroom ng mga estudyante,” she added.

“Our salute to our longtime partner, SM Foundation and SM Prime, for being so generous and proactive in providing us with school buildings that are conducive to learning. We are so grateful for your extended support to our school amidst the pandemic,” Balbon concluded.

SM Foundation, through its School Building Program, is an active partner of DepEd’s Adopt-a-School project. This social good initiative aims to promote quality public education by building classrooms nationwide.

How to manage a dog's aggression

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

If your dog has ever bitten or hurt someone, getting them help is critical. There are many ways to help manage the situation. You can use various options to reduce the dog's aggression and make them more obedient.

Amongst all the other methods, CBD for dog aggression is an easy way to reduce their anxiety, which might cause their anger.

Here are some ways you can manage your dog's aggression.

Understanding the Motivation Behind Aggression

If you're experiencing a dog who is aggressive towards people, it's essential to understand the motivation behind that behavior. Dogs are pack animals and have the instinct to protect their territory, food, and other resources from other dogs or people. Some dogs can be territorial of certain areas or objects (like toys) and possessive over what they see as theirs. Some dogs also feel protective of their owners or family members and may become aggressive when someone threatens them.

Socializing Your Dog

Socializing your dog is a lifelong process. It would help if you began socialization as soon as you get your new puppy, but the benefits of socialization can last a lifetime. Generally, dogs that do not receive enough early exposure to people and other animals are more likely to develop fear-based aggression later in life.

The best way to ensure your puppy has positive associations with other people, animals, and places is by teaching them at an early age that they can be comfortable in these situations. It's also essential for owners to understand how their behavior influences the dog's response when encountering something new or scary.

Before taking them outside their comfort zone, ensure they know they'll always be safe by rewarding them with treats when they see something new that makes them happy - like another animal or person!

The Power of Training

Training is one way for your dog to learn how to deal with stress and appropriately express itself. It can also help you understand each other's signals, which will help build trust between you and your pet.

If you're looking for some good training resources, check out these three popular options:

Exercising Your Dog

One of the best ways to control your dog's aggression is by exercising them. Exercise can be a fun way for you and your dog to bond, strengthen your relationship, and help them learn how to relax and get along better with others.

Exercise is also essential for physical health. Early morning walks are great for releasing pent-up energy from the previous day's nap, but if that doesn't seem like enough exercise for your pooch, try taking him jogging or hiking with you.

If they enjoy swimming, take them out on a boat; if they like playing chase games with other animals (or people), take them to the local park once or twice a week for fun outdoor time together!

Using CBD to Manage Animal Aggression

CBD is a naturally occurring compound found in the hemp plant. It is an effective treatment for various conditions, including anxiety and stress-related disorders.

CBD works by interacting with endogenous cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) in the endocannabinoid system; this interaction helps to reduce anxiety and alleviate symptoms of depression.

CBD for dog aggression affects their negative emotions that might otherwise cause an animal to act aggressively toward other animals or people. This makes CBD a natural alternative to medication when managing dog aggression issues.

Conclusion

With the right approach, you can manage your dog's aggression and help her become a more pleasant family member. The key is to be proactive about training and socialization from an early age.
