Maroons Far From Home: How Converge #DobleNa erases the distance for homesick hoopers

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

In the life of every UP student-athlete, there is much sacrifice involved — from grueling training to time management — in order to achieve their dreams in both sports and academics.

For those who hail from the provinces and overseas, there is also the added layer of being away from their family and loved ones for most of the calendar year.

With their focus zeroed in on their careers and finishing their degrees, it is easy for precious time with those who are important to get lost in the thick of things.

But luckily for members of the UP Men's Basketball Team, Converge ICT Solutions Inc. dishes an assist in the form of high speed internet in their dorm to help the players communicate with their loved ones from miles away.

Fil-Canadian Antonio Eusebio and Fil-Am Henry Galinato Jr. had to adjust the most as they joined the helm of the Maroons, as they needed to get used to life in another country.

Though admitting it's a challenge to live independently, they are able to adjust with the help of Converge and technology.

"At first it was a struggle, but like this time, I think I've experienced all the things that I've needed to experience and it's much better. I'm having an easier time," said Eusebio, who says his mother gets upset when he misses a video call. "They're all very clingy."

"It's hard but I got pretty used to it because Zav [Lucero] helped when I was here. But, you know, I miss my mom and everybody over there. I'm a lot older so it's not as hard as if this was a few years ago, it probably would be much more of a struggle for me but it's not that bad [with technology]. It's not like I'm going away forever, it's how I see it," quipped Galinato.

UP newcomer Janjan Felicilda also noted the flexibility Converge's internet provides, as the threat of COVID-19 continues to loom and limits in-person visits with family members.

"Syempre malaking bagay sa amin yun kaya nagpapasalamat kami sa Converge na napadali yung pag-communicate namin sa mga magulang namin, sa mga mahal namin sa buhay lalo na syempre, may COVID parin so pinadali nila yung buhay namin," he said.

Reyland Torres, for his part, noted that because of the distance, he would only get to see his family for twice a year. Being able to communicate via the internet helps douse the homesickness.

"Yung family ko halos twice a year lang kami magkasama kaya sobrang nagpapasalamat ako sa internet na binigay sa amin, makapag-usap kami ng family ko kahit malayo sila sa amin and araw-araw minemake sure namin makausap sila, kung okay lang sila. Okay lang din ba kami dito," Torres said.

Felicilda hails from Butuan, while Torres is from Bacolod.

Being able to communicate with family with constancy is of the utmost importance for the Fighting Maroons, as a number of them say that their family is the source of their biggest motivation.

"Important role yung parents ko sa pangarap ko kasi sila nagbibigay sa akin ng motivation, simula pa nung bata ako, sila na yung palaging nagsusupporta sa akin. Sila yung laging nasa likod ko pag gusto ko abutin yung pangarap ko," quipped Harold Alarcon, who is also from Bacolod.

"Sobrang laking bagay nila kasi sila yung nagpupush sa amin araw araw para mabuhay, para maglaro tapos may kukuhanan ka ng lakas para magpursigi sa buhay," added Davao-born Cyril Gonzales.

Even without seeing their family personally for most of their lives as student-athletes, UP folk hero JD Cagulangan, who comes from Butuan City, says that their love is felt from miles away through Converge.

"Yung support laging nandyan, yung mga kuya ko, even yung mga relatives ko, nararamdaman yung support nila sa akin," Cagulangan said.

Converge's latest offering gives consumers double their money's worth with fast internet as the FiberX Plan 1500 now gives users up to 100Mbps from it's previous 50Mbps.

Like the Fighting Maroons, continue to fight the distance with fast and reliable internet.

The reigning UAAP champions tested their mettle in South Korea for their preseason preparations. As part of their training, they have been facing pro teams in tune-up games.

“Sa amin, sobrang laking tulong [nung games dito sa Korea] kasi yung mga kalaban namin, mga pro na. Malaking bagay talaga,” said Cagulangan.

Penelope Cruz, Antonio Banderas starrer, one of the films in Instituto Cervantes' Pelicula Spanish Film Festival

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

"Official Competition " is a comedy starring Penelope Cruz, Antonio Banderas and Oscar Martinez and directed by Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat and is one of the films to be screened in this year's Pelicula Spanish Film Festival from October 5 to 16 at the Shangrila Plaza cinemas.

The movie is a satire on filmmaking and the ever-conflicting creative process of putting together a worthy film along with the laundry list of issues that go with it. 'A movie about making a movie” where Lola Cuevas (Penelope Cruz), a Cannes Palme d’Or-winning director gets entangled with her actors, the self-absorbed celebrity Félix Rivero (Antonio Banderas) and Iván Torres (Oscar Martínez), a thespian who is only devoted to the craft above all else. As the characters unfold, each turn takes a jab at each other, which displays a lot of conflated egos and silly turns, the classic trope of actor￾centric production rather than being an assembly line of contributing creatives. In sum, it pokes fun at the moviemaking business but also shows such a great deal of passion for the cinematic craft.

Official Competition had its world premiere at the 78th Venice International Film Festival on 4 September 2021. It also had been screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in mid September 2021. In Spain, the film was on February 2022 in Spain by Buena Vista International while Protagonist Pictures handled the international distribution rights.

Pelicula Spanish Film Festival returns to the theaters after two years of online screenings due to the Covid pandemic. Now in its 21st edition, the PELÍCULA Spanish Film Festival is one of the most successful film festivals of Instituto Cervantes globally showcasing a variety of acclaimed Spanish films while fostering better communication between cultures through the art of filmmaking, cinema, and cultural exchange. Its goal is to connect both Spanish and Filipino cultures and audiences through this choice selection of award-winning films.

PELíCULA 2022 is an initiative of Instituto Cervantes in Manila, Sydney and Kuala Lumpur, the Embassies of Spain in the Philippines and Australia, and the AECID, in collaboration with the Film Development Council of the Philippines, ICAA, the Embassy of Colombia in the Philippines, the Embassy of Panama in the Philippines, the UP Film Institute, the University of the Philippines and Intramuros Administration, Acciona, Vibal Foundation, Philippine Transmarine Carriers, and Rustan’s.

All the movies are in Spanish (or their original language) with English subtitles. For updates on the Festival, please visit the website of the Festival (https://pelikula.org) or the Facebook page of Instituto Cervantes de Manila: www.facebook.com/InstitutoCervantesManila.

SSS urges individuals, groups to subsidize Job Order, Informal Sector Workers and land-based OFWs’ contributions

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

The Social Security System (SSS) aims to transform social security coverage in the country through a new program that encourages individuals and groups to subsidize the monthly contributions of SSS members.

SSS President and Chief Executive Officer Michael G. Regino said that the Contribution Subsidy Provider Program (CSPP) is an out-of-the-box approach in helping members who are having a hard time paying their social security contributions.

Under this program, a contribution subsidy provider would cover the contributions of self-employed, land-based Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), or voluntary members. “A contribution subsidy provider could be a private or government individual or group willing to subsidize the SSS contributions of identified members,” Regino explained.

Regino said that the SSS would partner with potential contribution subsidy providers who are generous enough to shoulder the contribution payments of chosen SSS members for at least six (6) months. They could become a coverage and collection partner of the SSS through an online Certification with Undertaking or a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA). For convenience, contribution subsidy providers can pay the SSS contribution subsidies in any SSS branch with tellering facilities or through an SSS-accredited collection partner.

“We want to provide SSS coverage to workers in the informal sector and land-based OFWs. These workers have the lowest social security coverage in our workforce, and they are among the most vulnerable sector in times of contingencies,” Regino added.

The SSS has been reaching out and encouraging them to continue paying their monthly contributions. However, the pension fund fully understands that it is challenging to pay their SSS contributions regularly because of intermittent income and varied work arrangements.

As an example, government agencies can subsidize the contributions of their job order workers since they are not covered by the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS). Regino added that private institutions or multinational companies, as part of their corporate social responsibility, can shoulder the SSS contributions of self-employed informal sector workers or land-based OFWs who lost their jobs due to the pandemic.

“Subsidizing their SSS contributions is the greatest gift that we can give to a fellow Filipino. It will allow him to gain access to social security benefits which will serve as a cushion that they can rely on in times of emergencies and various contingencies,” Regino concluded.

Japan-affiliated telco InfiniVAN’s Submarine Cable Network project with Globe and Eastern Communications marks new milestone

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Following the landmark Subic Cable Loading Event in July, InfiniVAN, Inc. in a joint-build project with two other Philippine telcos, completed the Siargao landing of a segment of the Philippine Domestic Submarine Cable Network (PDSCN) in the Municipality of Dapa, Siargao Island on September 22.

InfiniVAN, Inc., a subsidiary of Tokyo Stock Exchange-listed IPS, Inc. (TSE: 4390) took part in the ceremonial cable pulling event of fiber optic cables that is part of the ongoing cable laying phase of PDSCN. Five (5) of the 24 segments have already been completed to date.

The cable-pulling ceremony was witnessed by Dapa Mayor Elizabeth T. Matugas, Vice Mayor Gerry Abejo and municipal officials along with representatives from InfiniVAN, Inc., Globe Telecom, and Eastern Communications. Once completed, the $150-million joint project that spans around 2,500 km will provide ultra-fast and reliable connectivity across the country.

InfiniVAN, Inc. Chief Technology Officer Alberto “Abet” Espedido said that aside from connecting major islands in the country, the project is designed to bring connectivity to tourist destination islands to further boost tourism and other industries in those places.

“We see this as an opportunity to fulfill our objective of providing connectivity to far flung areas. We hope that the project does not only provide good communications infrastructure to Siargao but also help pump-prime the island’s economy,” he said.

Espedido shared that the fiber optic cable technology used in the country’s biggest and longest submarine cable installation is “future-proof.” This means unrepeatered 96- core fiber cables used in the project can handle large data throughputs that can be further expanded through advances in terminal equipment over the next 20 to 25 years.

This InfiniVAN-initiated submarine cable project is a cost-effective solution to building a massive and extensive transmission network through a joint-build arrangement with Globe, the Philippines’ leading digital solutions platform and Eastern Communications, premier telecommunications and ICT solutions provider.

“We consider it an achievement, as a new entrant in the market, to be working with well-established partners on this project that will really make a difference in the next few years. It is gratifying to have so-called industry competitors join hands to provide a very precious resource to our countrymen and the country as a whole, in a most unselfish manner,” Espedido added.

The Express and Western routes connecting Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will be ready by December this year and the remaining Eastern routes will be completed by April 2023.

Photographing Africa’s ‘Big Five’

Wazzup Pilipinas!?

Surrounded by a sea of wildlife, we eye the horizon for giants.

Our open-topped Land Rover stops by the banks of Lake Magadi inside Tanzania’s famed Ngorongoro Crater. Pronounced ‘en-goro-engoro’, the 12-mile wide caldera is a solid contender for the greatest wildlife destination on Earth.

With our motley array of cameras, we have vowed to photograph – blurry or not – Africa’s Big Five. Coined by trophy hunters during the Victorian era, the Big Five are supposedly the deadliest animals in Africa – the lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros and Cape buffalo (no question about the last one). Though hunting is still allowed in parts of the continent, most visitors will only ever shoot with shutters, not triggers.

Soon after descending down the crater, we encountered prowling lions, stately elephants and inscrutable, mud-encrusted Cape buffalo.

As our Rover lurches to a halt, I clutch my lucky scarf to ward off dust and the late afternoon chill. Ngorongoro stands at an altitude of 6000 feet – as tall as many Philippine mountains. Its foreboding crater walls rise another 2000 feet in all directions, hemming in almost 30,000 large animals – from crafty packs of hyena to skittish herds of antelope.

Unlike the sprawling Serengeti Park where animals move back and forth to chase the rain, Ngorongoro’s wildlife have lived contentedly inside the caldera for millions of years. “The animals can actually climb up those slopes, but with ample supplies of grass and water, why would they leave?” explains Ray Shirima of Top Climbers Expeditions, an outfitter which also guided us to the summit of Africa’s highest mountain, snowcapped Kilimanjaro.

This afternoon’s quarry is the black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis), rarest of the Big Five. A potent blend of outdated beliefs and human greed caused the global population of these horned giants to plummet by 98% from 1960 to 1995. Almost 9000 African rhinos were killed for their horns from 2006 to 2015 alone, with Vietnam as the world’s top consumer.

Their horns – which can grow three feet or longer – are coveted as trophies and medicine. A 16th century Chinese pharmacist named Li Shizhen claimed that the horns, when ground as a tea, “Can cure hallucinations, carbuncles, headaches and possession by ogres and devils.”

In reality, rhinoceros horns are mostly made of keratin, so if you want all the benefits claimed by Li Shizhen, then just chew your fingernails.

Fortunately, anti-poaching drives and rigorous conservation have allowed black rhinoceros populations to recover from an all-time low of 2500 animals to almost 6000 heads today. The conservation organization where I started out, WWF, jumpstarted the global conservation movement by protecting black rhinos in 1961. My own organization, Best Alternatives, works to dent the rhino trade by pushing for environmentally-sound alternatives to wildlife products, such as keratin pills.

“Over there, beside the elands,” says Ray, pointing at a cluster of either very still buffalo or big rocks.

After a few moments, I finally discern two giants grazing alongside a herd of motionless buffalo. Black rhinos. Two of them, one with its tail up. Slowly, I raise my battered camera and snap blurry photos of the magnificent animals. The pictures – definitely not magazine-quality – are merely for proof, the moment forever seared into my memory.

The day’s mission accomplished, our Land Rover climbs the caldera rim en route to our campsite. The Savannah Gods have blessed us with four of the Big Five in one afternoon. Enough adventure for one day.

“Responsible tourism is the key to keeping our animals alive. If people keep visiting our national parks, then there will always be strong incentives to keep poachers away,” explains African wildlife guide Joseph Laiza.

That evening, the forest ringing our camp erupts with the symphony of life. Baritone elephant growls, haunting baboon barks and defiant lion roars meld seamlessly with human laughter. Wildlife pilgrims come to Africa’s Garden of Eden to see the uncensored spectacle of nature, to see how life was long before we started transforming our planet. A last glance at the crater miles below and I retire for the night, praying that Ngorongoro and many of the planet’s wild places stay this way, forever.

Stealthiest of the Big Five is the leopard (Panthera pardus), a camouflaged ambush predator which waits for hours to sneak up to spring-heeled antelope like gazelle and impala. To protect its kills from roaming hyenas, lions and jackals, it hauls kills up trees, where it spends most of its time. This one was spotted by our expert guide, Ray Shirima in the adjoining Serengeti National Park. It was lazily basking on a tree, curiously watching our every move.

Known as Black Death, Cape buffalo (Syncerus caffer) are considered the most unpredictable and dangerous of the Big Five, said to pretty much be unstoppable when enraged. Nothing short of a direct heart shot will drop them as their thick skulls and horns are rock-hard. By moving slowly and mindfully, I was able to approach and photograph quite a few of the giant grazers at close range.

I saw this southern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum simum) grazing beside Lake Nakuru in neighboring Kenya. Next to the African elephant, it is the world's largest land mammal. Largely due to conservation efforts, populations of the southern white rhino are hanging on. Sadly, populations of the northern white rhino have been completely decimated due to poaching. Northern white rhino are now extinct in the wild, prime examples of why we need to protect the world’s endangered species.

The King of Beasts and Africa's most famous animal, lions (Panthera leo) hunt alone, in pairs or as a pride. Simba, the name of our hero from The Lion King, is the Swahili word for lion. In olden times, man-eaters were rightfully feared: in a nine-month period in 1898, two male lions killed as many as 135 people in the Tsavo region of Kenya. Lion attacks are now exceptionally rare, with less than 50 recorded attacks in the past century.

Typical open-topped Land Rover trundles slowly along a well-maintained dirt track inside Ngorongoro Crater. The crater rim, which rises 2000 feet, can clearly be seen at the back. Africa’s wildlife safaris are usually highly-organized, with well-tended roads, campsites and lodges. For those interested in going on an African safari, contact Ndurumo Safaris and Top Climbers Expeditions to get started. September through November are fine months to go, especially since two million migrating wildebeest shall brave the deadly Mara River, crossing from Kenya to Tanzania.

Filipino explorer and environmentalist Gregg Yan spent several weeks on the African continent, visiting numerous national parks and communities to document wildlife, scapes and indigenous cultural practices. Read more of his adventures online.

African bush elephants (Loxodonta africana) are the world's largest land animals, reaching nearly 12 feet at the shoulder. Though many herds have been decimated by poachers for their ivory tusks, over 400,000 of these gentle giants are still hanging on in the National Parks and Game Reserves of Africa. Readers can help save them by getting in touch with nonprofits like WWF.

Abanse Negrense! The Negros Trade Fair is back at the Glorietta Activity Center with a theme appropriately called Hidlaw

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The 36th Negros Trade Fair (NTF) welcomes all at the event that puts the spotlight on proudly Negrense products created with skilled craftsmanship. NTF has over 60 participating exhibitors all ready to boast their creations.

It's time to reconnect with each other as the 36th Negros Trade Fair: Hidlaw showcases the best of Negros food, fashion, craftsmanship, and many other products and experiences.

The theme Hidlaw is very appropriate as we do have quite a lot to catch up after the years of hiatus due to the Covid-19 or Coronavirus pandemic. Hidlaw in Hiligaynon means longing or yearning or missing.

Michael Claparols, Negros Trade Fair chairman

Nicholas Yulo, Mayor of Bago city

Alan Gensoli, Negros Season of Culture

Eugenio Jose Lacson, governor of Negros Occidental

The ringing of the bell during the opening ceremonies at the trade fair means that the Negros Trade Fair: Hidlaw is now officially open.

The 36th run of the fair, after two years of inactivity, is a highly appreciated event to help  MSMEs of the Negros province to recover, and we are so glad that the first day was a huge success because I've seen and heard a lot of booths getting flocked by customers. I'm sure the event, ongoing until the 25th  of September, will continue to be a crowd-pleaser for people, especially from Manila, really need to once again immerse themselves in quality products, and the entrepreneurs of Negros are among the finest producers of well-loved creations for both food and non-food.

Appropriately, Hidlaw is a Hiligaynon word which means "to yearn, to long, have a strong desire (for something) to long something in the past with melancholy, nostalgically.

Stephanie Hilado Lindaya, the artist who designed the poster artwork for the event,  said she missed people flocking the booths, hearing the words " at ma tahum!", "namit-namit gid ya!", and "nahidlaw gid ko sang inasal" . For most Negrenses in Manila, it's a homecoming!

It's about time we bring back the glorious days! Abanse Negrense!

Congratulations to the organizers, Association of Negros Producers and the provincial government of Negros Occidental, of the 36th Negros trade fair.

Be part of the longest-running provincial trade fair happening this September 20-25 at Glorietta Activity Center in Makati city.
