Home health aide training is becoming an increasingly common career choice. If you wish to provide a needed service for those in need, becoming a home health aide may be the right fit for you. Get info on what it means to be a home health aide, and start your career today.
Health aides at home offer basic care to sick, elderly, or disabled people. They can be a part of a multidisciplinary team or work independently. A home care aide can provide a range of services from personal home health care to nursing and more. The idea is to give the patient sores, serve meals, transport them and take their vitals without incurring billing costs. Study and review HHA questions and answers. You'll be able to take the state exam faster, and it will help you with the certification process.
Home health aide certificate programs include everything from basic medical care through patient care, to private duty and respite care, to chronic care management. The job of an HHA is to provide treatment and care for those in need, at home or in the hospital. Home health aides will assist the patient in their day-to-day activities, including taking vital signs, giving medications, and preparing meals. They may perform light housekeeping duties such as laundry and bathing.
Most HHA programs are 60 hours long and may also require clinical experience or observation. The coursework covers the aging process, anatomy and physiology, skin care management, infection prevention, bloodborne pathogen prevention, and universal precautions. Coursework may also include CPR for the healthcare professional and lifesaving courses like Basic Life Support Course Ontario.
There's no need for any education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent to become a licensed home health aide, but you must complete a training program. Training programs can be as short as two weeks, but most states require three to four months of training. Remember that the standards for HHA certification may differ from one state to another. Please ensure that you know the qualifications for your state before beginning the application process.
The cost of a home health aide certification program is usually between $300 and $650. You can choose from online programs, weekend or evening classes, or in-person courses. Online courses are usually more economical than weekend or evening classes because they require fewer contact hours with instructors and other students on a physical campus.
To become licensed, you must pass a certification exam. The exam for a home health aide is in two parts. The first part is the written exam, which tests your basic medical and personal care tasks. The second part is the skills exam, which tests your ability to perform a range of tasks. Most states require you to pass both parts of a certification exam before getting a license.
Applicants must pass the test with a 70 or 80% score, based on the state they're trying to obtain certification for. You must retake the home health aide test if you fail any section. The certification is valid for three years, and you can take it up to three times if you fail each attempt.
After passing the exams, home health aides must contact a register to record their certification. They can use this information to apply for jobs at a local health agency or hospital. Home health aides are in high demand because of the aging population and because there are far more people with chronic diseases who need care at home or help with day-to-day tasks. They're typically employed by either a community agency or an individual client's family.
In the United States, a home health aide earns an average of $13.83 per hour, roughly $27,000 per year. Typically, a home health aide will work an average of 40 hours per week during normal business hours and may also be expected to work overtime or on-call shifts. Private duty nursing aides and certified nurse assistants may qualify for this position.
If you're considering becoming a home health aide for your reasons, keep in mind that it's an honest and rewarding career. Home health aides contribute to people's lives, whether they need help with medical care or emotional support from someone who understands them.
