FDCP’s International Film Industry Conference Online 2021 Reveals Lineup of its 5th Edition

As one of the main highlights of the Philippine Film Industry Month this September, the elevated International Film Industry Conference (IFIC) organized by the Film Development of Council (FDCP), has put together 11 free public sessions and seven masterclasses from September 16 to 19 featuring the heavyweights and leaders of the global film industry.

Since 2017 and previously known as FIC, IFIC has been conducting an  annual conference consisting of a series of sessions and masterclasses that supports the development of Filipino filmmaking and its stakeholders by bringing together big names from the local and international film industries to become panelists and speakers. It has since expanded to offer sessions and workshops that can also be availed by regional and international filmmakers and enthusiasts.

Last year, the first online Film Industry Conference (FIC) with over 2,000 attendees, had 16 local and international partners, eight online public sessions, six online masterclasses, and 32 local and international speakers.

“As we expand the annual conference to IFIC along with the eventful celebration of the very first Philippine Film Industry Month, we also elevate the sessions and masterclasses by purposefully curating the lineup of topics and bringing in exceptional filmmakers and professionals in the industry. There’s so much going on right now in the international arena and through IFIC, we are brought together to know more about the direction and future of cinema,” said FDCP Chairperson and CEO Liza Diño.

The 11 public sessions consist of a variety of relevant topics that will be valuable to aspiring filmmakers and film students. The sessions include the topics: ‘Nurturing Your Narratives Through Film Labs,’ ‘Essentials on Film Financing,’ ‘Fundamentals of Dossier Making,’ ‘Filming With the ASEAN Region: The Future of Film Funding and Grant Opportunities,’ ‘Backstage Access: Bringing Philippine Animation to the World,’ ‘Shaping the New Landscape of ASEAN Film Industry,’ ‘Film Market Strategies and Trends,’ ‘Preserving the Future with Film Archiving,’ ‘Netflix: Bringing Filipino Stories to Audiences Everywhere,’ ‘Behind the Scenes of International Distribution,’ and ‘Building Strategies Towards the Future of Film Exhibition.’

Providing more specific and practical knowledge recommended for film industry professionals and enthusiasts seeking to advance their careers in filmmaking, the seven masterclasses offered in the conference are ‘Writing Essentials: Creating Character-Driven Stories,’ ‘Unveiling Success Behind Documentary Co-Production,’ ‘To the Next Level: Fundamentals of Dossier Making,’ ‘Packaging Your Films for Release,’ ‘Finding the Right Tune for Your Film Pitch,’ ‘Forging Paths for Wider Reach: A Guide to Film Marketing,’ and ‘Reality Check: Transformations in Film Distribution.’ They can be accessible starting from PHP 800 (16 USD) to 1,000 PHP (20 USD) per class and PHP 5,000 (100 USD) for premium access to all masterclasses.

The 5th edition of the IFIC will be composed of 11 Public Sessions for free via Zoom and will be streamed at FDCP Facebook and Youtube pages. The seven Masterclasses via Zoom are open to the public for pre-registration, both local and international.

Keynote Address: The Film Industry, Today and Tomorrow

Speaker: Stephen Jenner | Vice President, Communications, Asia Pacific Region - Motion Pictures Association

The adversities brought by the pandemic have enormously transformed the audiovisual industry globally. This keynote address from the Motion Pictures Association which serves as the leading advocate of film, entertainment, and streaming industry around the world, will focus on reviewing the major trends of the global film, television, and streaming industry, the emerging opportunities for filmmakers, and the various challenges to further growth of the film industry.

Loglines, synopses, and mastering your genre are some of the key elements in writing a good script. In this writing masterclass with an international film writer and consultant, learn how to start with an idea, understand your genre, write a synopsis in the tone of your overall script.

Securing funding for your film project especially with international partners can be tough work for producers, but there are widely available practical selections that are being offered. This session will delve on several ways on how an ASEAN project can take advantage of the resources available to secure their film funding through grants, tax incentives, gap financing, pre-sales, and the new approaches in the reality of the new normal in the industry.

With such rich history and diverse narratives in the Philippines, documentary films  have been making waves locally and internationally. As it is hard enough to secure international co-productions for feature films, it can be a lot more challenging to acquire this for documentary films. Filmmakers must have a significant amount of commitment, time, and necessary funding in producing. This session will delve on the nuances, process, and opportunities in pursuing international co-productions for documentary films.

Masterclass 3: To the Next Level: Fundamentals of Dossier Making (Consultation)

An exclusive dossier making masterclass and consultation with Filipina based producer, Armi Rae Cacanindin. She received funding for her feature films from highly competitive grants such as Aide aux Cinéma du Monde, World Cinema Fund, Sundance Film Institute grant,  IDFA Bertha Fund,  Doha Film Institute post grant, Purin Pictures grant, Asian Cinema Fund, Hubert Bals Fund, Vision Sud  Est, Torino Film Lab, SGIFF’S SEA-DOC fund and the recently launched ICOF and ACOF by the Film Development Council of the  Philippines.
