Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Delfin Lorenzana is set to lead the 157th birth anniversary of Andres Bonifacio on Monday, Nov. 30 at 8:00 a.m., at the Bonifacio National Monument in Caloocan City.
Lorenzana will represent President Rodrigo Roa Duterte in leading the flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremonies for the hero’s birth date with the theme: “Bonifacio 2020: Tapang at Kaligtasan Tungo sa Malayang Lipunan.”
Due to the dangers brought by COVID-19 pandemic, however, the commemoration will be a “simple, yet meaningful celebration.”
During the live telecast of the ceremonial rites, a virtual message by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte will be shown in celebration of the hero’s birth anniversary.
Other historical sites commemorating the event include the:
- Museo ng Paglilitis ni Andres Bonifacio, Maragondon, Cavite;
- Bonifacio Memorial Shrine, beside Manila City Hall;
- Bonifacio Monument, Balintawak (Cloverleaf), Quezon City;
- Andres Bonifacio Monument, San Juan City;
- Bonifacio Monument, Tutuban Center, Manila; and
- Bonifacio Monument, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.
Andres Bonifacio, a humble and patriotic man, saw the oppression his fellowmen endured under colonial rule. He joined the La Liga Filipina, an organization founded by Dr. Jose Rizal. When the organization ceased to exist on 3 July 1892, Bonifacio founded the Kataastaasan Kagalanggalang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan (KKK or Katipunan). He was later on elected as the Supremo of the revolutionary organization.
This year’s commemorative program is led by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), in coordination with the City Government of Caloocan and other government agencies. (PIA-NCR)
