UFC world champion Conor McGregor and undefeated pound-for-pound world boxing champ Floyd Mayweather Jr. will clash in a much-awaited duel at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas this Saturday, Aug 26 at 9 p.m. (Sunday, Aug. 27, 9 a.m. Manila Time).
While a throng of MMA and boxing fanatics are expected to descend upon the so-called “Sin City,” local fans wanting to get in on the action may do so, Vegas style, courtesy of a giant screen and live HD broadcast of the fight on Sunday morning. Sports fanatics can enjoy the Pay-Per-View screening of the fight at the Kia Theatre in Araneta Center, Quezon City. It is said that the seed was planted for this year’s most anticipated sporting match back in April 2015 when, in an Esquire article by writer Chris Jones, then-rising MMA fighter McGregor was quoted, “If I fought Floyd, I would kill him in less than 30 seconds.”
That quote from the UFC champ spread like wildfire. Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe credited social media’s role in getting this fight set up. Adding fuel to the fire, Mayweather even tweeted a fake poster in jest that read “Mayweather Conor Live on Pay-Per-View” early last year. Fans picked it up and talked relentlessly online about a supposed rivalry between Mayweather and McGregor. The rest, as they say, is history.
