Volunteers from the De La Salle-College of Saint
Benilde recently conducted free summer training workshops at the Escuela de
Nuestra SeƱora de La Salette in Dagupan City.
Benilde, through the Center for Social Action
(CSA) office led by its director, Leo Cortes, and La Salette, represented by
its president, Marianne Tan-Lor, partnered in the Summer of Service (SOS) 2017
program to provide free training and workshop to teachers, staff and students
of the De La Salle-supervised school at Tapuac District.
In the spirit of volunteerism, service and
collaboration, Benildeans provided skills-based services to La Salette from
April 17 to 27. CSA matched the skills of SOS participants to the training
needs of its partner school.
Anna Aqui, who works as a Counselor for
Multimedia Arts at the DLS-CSB Center for Counseling Services, handled
Personality Development for La Salette teachers and staff led by Principal
Sonia Tandingan-Camacho and Student Services Director Rustan DV. Indong.
“I signed up for SOS to share what I know about
positive psychology and student well-being in schools, learn more about myself
and be of service to other communities,” Aqui said.
Mary Clarence B. Cariso, a BSHRIM Hospitality
Management student, facilitated the Mathematics Enrichment Program class for
Grades 4 to 6 while Maria Annie D. Billones, a BSBA Human Resource Management
major, taught Campus Journalism to students from Grades 7 to 11.
Shena Mae Amor, also a BSBA HRM student like
Billones, facilitated the Research Writing-Science Investigatory Project class
for Grades 7 to 11 students. She gave different scientific experiments for the
students to do before teaching them how to write their papers for their science
fair exhibits as part of the culminating activity.
“I joined SOS because I want to grow as a person
by helping others gain new knowledge through teaching and sharing what I know,”
Amor, who is graduating this term, shared.
Seymour Sanchez, lecturer at the DLS-CSB Film
Department, served as Team Dagupan’s faculty adviser. Being a former news
producer at CNN Philippines, he also taught Broadcast News Writing and
Reporting to students of the Campus Journalism class.
The student journalists then covered the
Gilon-gilon ed Baley street dancing parade along the city’s downtown area to
shoot pictures for their photojournalism exhibit and record videos to give them
a feel of broadcast news reporting.
Volunteers from the DLS-CSB School of Deaf Education
and Applied Studies (SDEAS) arrived on the second week and offered free
Special Education symposium and Filipino Sign Language classes. The SOS and
SDEAS teams also paid a courtesy call on Dagupan City Mayor Belen T. Fernandez
and City Administrator Atty. Farah Marie G. Decano.
CSA coordinator Reynolph Patrick Ladon revealed
that the two-week volunteering program also aims to bring participants to
unfamiliar territories for them to learn how to acquaint themselves with
another culture and adjust to a new community.
La Salette, a first-time Benilde SOS partner, is
a center for development and formation of the young through quality, human and
Christian education. The school offers a well-rounded curriculum and employs
the innovative Dynamic Learning Program.
Other SOS teams were assigned to Gapan in Nueva
Ecija, Guiuan in Eastern Samar, Danao in Cebu, Barangay Masaplod and Barangay
Libjo at Dauin in Negros Oriental, Sitio Banga and Sitio Matanguilon at
Kabankalan City in Negros Occidental, Bislig in Surigao del Sur, Davao and
Davao Oriental.
All groups convened at the Benilde Retreat and
Conference Complex in Tagaytay for the CrossRoads program and graduation of all
SOS 2017 volunteers last April 30.
