Privacy Commission Advisory on Yahoo Breach

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The National Privacy Commission (NPC), an independent body mandated to administer and implement the Data Privacy Act of 2012, and to monitor and ensure compliance of the country with international standards set for data protection, would like to reiterate the recommendations of Yahoo and cybersecurity experts to Yahoo users to change their passwords on their Yahoo accounts.

This follows after the compromise of half million user accounts from Yahoo’s servers in 2014 that was only discovered and confirmed by Yahoo this week. Below is what was posted on Yahoo’s email log-in page about the Account Security issue :
“We have confirmed, based on a recent investigation, that a copy of certain user account information was stolen from our network in late 2014 by what we believe is a state-sponsored actor. The account information may have included names, email addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, hashed passwords (the vast majority with bcrypt) and, in some cases, encrypted or unencrypted security questions and answers. “
Other than changing their Yahoo log-in credentials, the NPC also recommends that Yahoo users change log-in credentials of their other online accounts where they might have used their Yahoo email for account verification purposes. The security questions on Yahoo might also have been compromised and it would be a good idea to revise the security questions or disable that feature. The NPC also recommends activating two-part authentication to gain first time access to your account. Two-part authentication uses a phone number you provided to verify your identity.

Jollibee Launches its First Mobile App Using Augmented Reality

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Kids nowadays belong to the digital generation who could easily learn how to use gadgets and technology. I sometimes find myself getting overwhelmed by the amount of information and adaptability they show in learning how to use new devices in terms of both hardware and software.

Thus, it is not surprising that many companies are now going with the trend since it is the inevitable direction for all especially if we want to belong among those moving forward with the use of technology in most of our activities, may it be at our home, schools or offices. Doing everything from work and learning to entertainment and leisure now involves taking advantage of what technology has to offer.

One of the most popular technological advancement is the proliferation of mobile apps for just about everything from office productivity tools to fun and games. These mobile apps have changed how we do almost everything and whether we would admit it or not, we have embraced its power for our benefit.

Jollibee, the country’s number one fast-food chain, is equally jumping into the bandwagon by recently unveiling its first-ever mobile application called JolliDance Showdown app that is sure to be a hit among Jollibee fans of all ages.

The big reveal held on September 24, 2016 at Ascott Hotel in Bonifacio Global City made public the all-new mobile app that was developed by renowned Los Angeles-based mobile innovation agency, Trigger. The agency has produced applications for other clients like Sony Pictures, Lionsgate Entertainment, and Lucas Film.

DOE Empowers Students to Champion Energy in Their Respective Campuses

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Recognizing students as powerful agents of change, the Department of Energy (DOE) has reinforced its linkage with the academe by establishing a Consumer Education Program (CEP) through its Consumer Welfare and Promotion Office (CWPO), which aims to create greater awareness and understanding about sources of energy while bringing the DOE closer to the public.

Recently, the DOE opened its doors to various student groups. Engr. Arwin Ardon, President and CEO of PNOC-Renewables Corp. introduced basic electricity concepts, safety tips and initiated exercises for the students to work on.

To better comprehend electricity and its usage in practical terms, there were lectures on the dynamics of the power market, such as how trading in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market affects electricity pricing.

The DOE’s energy labelling program was explained by two technical experts, Engrs. Eduardo Fernandez and Isagani Soriano.

The photo above shows DOE-Director for Energy Research and Testing Laboratory Services Amelia de Guzman introducing the energy sector to students of STI College.

A technical tour was conducted for the students at the DOE-Lighting and Appliance Testing Laboratory (LATL) within the Energy Center, where the performance of household appliances and lighting devices is tested and labeled according to their efficiency ratings.

Porsche, Audi and Toyota Stage Exciting Show in Texas Heat

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Despite the day’s stifling heat, the 2016 6 Hours of Circuit of The Americas lived up to its promise to provide spectators with a thrilling show. The race kicked off at 5pm local time with the air and ground temperatures standing at 35°C and 45°C respectively. The first four hours were dominated by Audi Sport, while the final third provided an exciting battle between all three LM P1-H teams.

Porsche Team went on to take the victory, assisted by the strategy of the N°1 919 Hybrid (Bernhard/Hartley/Webber) which took advantage of a Full Course Yellow interruption to ease into the lead. Audi Sport came second with the N°8 R18 of Di Grassi/Duval/Jarvis (who very nearly retired), and Toyota Gazoo Racing came third with the N°6 TS050 Hybrid (Sarrazin/Conway/Kobayashi). The latter was helped by its drivers’ ability to double-stint their MICHELIN ‘SOFT Hot Weather’ tyres during the evening, whereas their rivals ran the ‘Hot Weather Plus’ compound early on.

After dominating Friday’s qualifying, the two Audi R18sgot away to a strong start and, after a short scrap with Porsche, managed to pull out a gap during the opening hour, leaving Porsche and Toyota to battle in their wake. The two German teams opted for the MICHELIN ‘SOFT Hot Weather Plus’ compound, while Toyota preferred the MICHELIN ‘SOFT Hot Weather’ option.By the start of the second hour, the order seemed to be well established, with the Audi R18s lapping two seconds apart, the two Porsches more than half-a-minute back and the Toyotas gradually losing ground.

This situation lasted around an hour until Toyota Gazoo Racingchose to stay on the same tyres after its third refuelling stop which took place during a Full Course Yellow interruption. The time saved allowed it to re-join in a stronger position. By this time, however, Audi Sport had established a handsome lead which it defended until the 100-lap mark…

Nat Geo and WWF Outfit Mindoro Tribesmen and Rangers with Solar Lamps and Patrol Kits

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The National Geographic Channel (NGC) and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) recently gave 50 portable solar lamps to the Taw’Buid – an indigenous Mangyan group inhabiting the remote mountains of Mindoro. Park rangers protecting the Mts. Iglit-Baco National Park also received new hammocks, raingear and all-weather patrol uniforms from the Primer Group of Companies.

The deployment is part of NGC’s Earth Day Run, which has been supporting WWF projects since 2013. Race proceeds reforested Isabela forests with 20,000 fruit-bearing trees in 2013 and deployed fibreglass bancas for Palawan fishermen in 2014.

Proceeds from NGC’s 2015 race funded the solar lamp deployment, which was held inside the Mts. Iglit-Baco National Park last 3 September. About 15 million Filipinos lack regular access to electricity and Mindoro’s Taw’Buid tribesfolk are no exception, relying on kerosene and firewood to light their homes.

“We gave portable solar lamps because burning fossil fuels accelerates climate change,” says WWF-Philippines President and CEO Joel Palma. “Solar energy is an economical and safe power source because there are no emissions to trigger respiratory ailments. Our goal is to cover basic Filipino needs while fighting climate change.”

The photo above shows newly-outfitted park rangers and their Taw’Buid tracker spot wildlife from the summit of Mt. McGowen in the Mts. Iglit-Baco National Park, last refuge of the critically-endangered Tamaraw, a legally-protected species.

Collaboration is the key to every successful business, and this could only be successfully implemented if there is quality and security in our means of communication. Of course, we also need to effectively gauge our transaction performance using accurate data analytics.

Acceler8 Turns 1 and Launches 2nd Coworking Space at Paseo De Roxas

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Congratulations to Acceler8 for turning 1! But the celebration does not stop there for on top of their 1st year anniversary, they also officially opened their second coworking branch in 111 Paseo de Roxas. That's a double celebration that really needs to be punctuated with an exclamation point!

It seems coworking spaces or shared offices are becoming highly in demand right now especially for startups whom we all know probably do not have enough financial capacity to rent or own their own offices. I've had the opportunity to visit several of these establishments from all over Makati and Bonifacio Global City who also invited us to help share the news about their special offer that all entrepreneurs should take advantage.

An office space, though no longer as necessary as before for this digital generation - especially for Millenials, is still more convenient to have if we want to project professionalism. It is still highly prestigious to meet with clients or customers at a presentable place instead of a coffee shop or restaurant.

It is more economical to avail of coworking spaces to lessen a business' operating expenses or overhead. This is also why a group of businessmen are trying to negotiate with mall owners to give startups special rates while they are in the process of growing their business. All these effort is to encourage more entrepreneurs to setup their own business ventures.

We see these visionaries getting younger and younger, and already planning as early during their college days. Making it easier for them to start with minimal cash out or capital would be very helpful. The government should also reduce, if not able to eliminate, the lengthy, tedious and expensive, bureaucratic procedure in applying for a business permit.

Aside from the media launch where the founders gave their opening speeches, Accler8 also organized different discussions and talks that will surely help in our business' development.

Don Papa Rum Brings Michel Dame of Cocktail Boutique Netherlands to Manila

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Bartenders may be having so much fun being in the presence of all kinds of liquors at their disposal to come up with a masterpiece drink that will either tame or bring out the beast in you. Thus most bartenders bring their status up to notches higher by really understanding the science behind mixing drinks.

Indeed, it requires you to become a "mixologist" to make bartending level up to its highest form. Frankly, the great ones don't just mix everything together, shake or stir, but also look at the profile of his customer and concocts something appropriate. Now, that's another social expertise that bartenders may apply if they want to go beyond just serving drinks from a bar.

The craft can also be artistic because even the choice of glass, as well as how you make the presentation look more interesting by adding slices of fruits like lemons, apples, and other fruits, may spell a big difference in how customers would appreciate the drink.

For a night showcasing the Art of Bartending, the Don brings the Dutch to Manila to let media peeps experience the basics, and even more, of being a bartender, of which involves being both artistic and scientific. There was a media challenge where teams compete for the best drink, which includes the Don Papa Rum, that they could concoct that night. We have to congratulate the Umali husband and wife team for winning the media challenge.

Papa John's: Passionate About Pizza, Pasta and More

Wazzup Pilipinas!

I could never get tired of eating pizza. If I am at home for a weekend movie marathon, pizza will be the first thing I would order for delivery. When I want something to bring home for my loved ones, among my choices would include pizza. Nothing else is as convenient and satisfying for my craving for comfort food that I'm sure I couldn't go wrong.

For the ultimate pizza experience, I can sincerely say that there's only a few pizza restaurants that can truly satisfy my craving for the taste that won't disappoint.

I've tried and tasted several kinds from different brands and nothing pleases me more than those brands that really offers fresh meat, cheese and vegetables like Papa John's Pizza.

I guess I lost count already of how many times I've ordered pizza from this restaurant, including take-outs of my favorite kinds like All The Meats and Pepperoni. Yeah, I love all kinds of meat for my pizza, but I'm also the one who loves pineapple bits as my choice of toppings. Thus The Hawaiian is also a runner-up for third favorite.

Lately, we were invited to try out Papa John's specialties at their SM Megamall branch. It was probably an introductory event for the launch of their new products of which a couple were introduced that day. I was proud to have been able to try out two new dishes, the Strombolis, that are yet to be launched this December. Now, that's only a few months from now, but I'm honored to be among the first ones to experience these new offering from Papa John's.

Hong Kong Tourism Board and Discovery Renew Partnership With A Third Iteration Of A Taste Of Hong Kong

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific, a division of the leading global entertainment provider Discovery Communications, has partnered with Hong Kong Tourism Board for the third consecutive year to present a brand new season of A TASTE OF HONG KONG. The three-part series sees the return of Ian Wright – one of TLC’s most renowned hosts – to the channel. Ian, together with Hong Kong chef and foodie extraordinaire Christian Yang, will explore and curate Hong Kong’s exciting food scene to present the best food experiences the booming metropolis has to offer. The end of each episode also features a dish created by Christian. A TASTE OF HONG KONG premieres on TLC on September 30 in Hong Kong and across Southeast Asia, and in November in Taiwan. TLC is the flagship lifestyle channel in Discovery’s portfolio of brands.

The first season of A TASTE OF HONG KONG brought some of Asia’s rising chefs to Hong Kong to discover the city’s best-kept secrets with veteran entertainment writer and true-blue Hong Konger Michelle Loo. Season two delved into the city’s buzzing art, design and fashion scene, with visiting Asian artists taking in Hong Kong’s artistic culture alongside host Dominic Lau. The first and second seasons performed well for TLC, delivering above the channel’s prime time average*. Both series were also recognised at the Marketing Excellence Awards 2015, winning ‘Best PR Campaign’ for Hong Kong Tourism Board.

Commenting on the partnership, Vikram Channa, Group Vice President, Production & Commercial Partnerships, Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific, said, “We constantly seek to provide our partners with bespoke solutions that not only appeal to their target audience but also resonate with our viewers. We are excited to partner with Hong Kong Tourism Board once again and take 'content and experience marketing' to the next level with a new season of A Taste of Hong Kong. Just like the ever-evolving nature of Hong Kong as a tourist destination, the series concept must stay dynamic. In this latest edition we curate a mouth-watering list of Hong Kong’s top eats through the perspective of a well-travelled explorer like Ian, and local chef and foodie, Christian Yang."

AFFI’s 15th Franchise & Business Expo: Expect New, Fresh and Seasoned Business Opportunities

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The Philippines is currently undergoing plenty of political and economical changes, what with the Duterte administration introducing several new economic policies and government mandates in previous months. This, along with the international community’s heightened interest in the country following our consistent growth over the last few years, all contribute to the nation’s evolving commercial landscape, launching a number of challenges and opportunities the business community has yet to fully take advantage of.

Some of the Philippines’ top franchisors have the perfect response to these vital changes: the 15th Franchise and Business Expo—slated on October 14-16 at the World Trade Center in Pasay City—is set to get business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs ready for the paradigm shift as the entire country treads on the daunting path to personal and inclusive growth.

The Association of Filipino Franchisers Inc. (AFFI), organizer of the Franchise & Business Expo, believes that a large fraction of the responsibility in achieving inclusive growth for the country lies on the franchise and business sector.

“As the premier community of empowered entrepreneurs in the country, we make it our personal mission to lead the sector towards a more involved role in nation-building,” said AFFI President Jerry Ilao. “The government has their job cut out for them. They have to make sure that the country is primed for business and investment opportunities, and that’s what they are focusing on now. But as Filipino entrerpeneurs, we also have ours cut out for us.”

The franchising industry has a significant impact on employment generation and socioeconomic development. As an example, AFFI’s member corporations have already created 213,569 jobs in this year alone.

“Just imagine what the entire industry could do and give the country if we manage to really boost the franchising sector this time,” commented Ilao.

The Big 1: Acceler8 Opens Its Doors to the Public

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Acceler8 was a mere idea for the four founders, Mikko Barranda, Carlo Coronel, Bryant Cuison and Albert Goh. They envisioned building and managing a space where like-minded individuals could easily discuss and work together. Inspired and driven towards this vision, the founders got together and turned their ideas into a reality. Today, Acceler8 has over a hundred community members, twenty five offices, two amazing spaces and one growing team with the passion to keep the community #hustling everyday.

Acceler8 - 111 Paseo de Roxas

Less than a year after they opened their first branch in Salcedo Village, the Acceler8 team welcomed new members to a wider, more versatile space in 111 Paseo de Roxas Building, Legaspi Village, Makati City. Acceler8, Paseo is everything and more for promising entrepreneurs, business owners, freelancers or students. Following the same design aesthetics of their first branch, Acceler8 Paseo gives of an industrial feel; the workspace promotes productivity with bright white lights in the offices and work areas, accent green spaces, and a 100 SQM event space onsite.

Their services include coworking membership plans and dedicated spaces, such as dedicated desks and private serviced office suites. Their meeting rooms can also be booked in advance online or through their Community Advocates. Each of their members is given privileged access to their affiliate office center, vOffice’s conference rooms, meeting rooms and lounges.

The new workspace at 111 Paseo de Roxas houses 20 fully-equipped offices that may be rented out for a minimum of three months, and world-class meeting rooms equipped with Smart TV and projectors perfect for corporate meetings and brainstorming sessions. What’s more exciting is a wider coworking space that welcomes more members to experience the Acceler8 community. The team has also stepped it up a notch at Paseo by having Kuppa provide specialty coffee available for all members and guests at the space. Walk-in and experience their community by purchasing a Day Pass or choose from their monthly coworking plans.

10 Metro Manila Condos Where You Can Be A Pokemon Master

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Catch Pokémons all day and level up quickly if you live in one of these 10 condos

If you are a member of the #Batang90s, then it is highly possible that you are now one of the many Pokémon trainers using Pokémon Go, a gaming app based on the Japanese animated TV show that has taken the world by storm.

Since the game’s launch in the Philippines last August 6, streets, parks, malls, famous landmarks, and even condos in Metro Manila’s central business districts (CBDs) have never seen so many people walking with their head down while clutching their phones, trying to spot and catch Pokémons—which is short for Pocket Monsters.

To be a Pokémon Master, one must go through several levels throughout the game by capturing over a hundred Pokémon species. There are over 15 types of Pokémons, such as water, plant, and electric—just like the crowd’s favorite, Pikachu—and they evolve into something stronger after the player has gained Experience Points along the way. They then battle at Pokémon gyms, and after that, the player can heal or revive them with potions or even power-up their skills.

Therefore, if you want to be the very best, you need to have items that can do the following:

1.   Catch a Pokémon
2.   Lure a Pokémon to your location
3.   Treat or revive a Pokémon

These helpful items can be acquired when you visit Pokéstops, which give you free items every five minutes, and these Pokéstops can be found all over the metro.

Unfortunately, not all streets have their own Pokéstops. As reported by some Filipino Pokémon trainers, Pokéstop counts in some Metro Manila areas could be as low as two. This low number forces them to travel or drive many blocks away. However, in some areas such as the CBDs, Pokéstops are literally just a few feet away from each other.

A nearby Pokéstop is essential for Pokémon trainers to quickly replenish their items and continue on with their Pokémon adventure. But how great would it be if the Pokéstops are not only nearby, but are actually the places you are residing in? Lamudi has listed 10 condos that serve as Pokéstops to its very lucky residents and future Pokémon masters.

POKÉSTOPS IN MAKATI

1. Eton Tower Makati

Located at the corner of Dela Rosa and V. A. Rufino Streets of Makati’s Legaspi Village is the newly built 41-story Eton Tower Makati. In this high-rise condo you can reach the Pokéstop “Ang Buwaya at ang Groto.” But depending upon the accuracy of your handheld device, you might even access three more Pokéstops that are only a few feet away from the mentioned Pokéstop.

Eton Tower Makati is a mixed-use condo that offers mini suites (single, double, family rooms) and SOHO (small office/home office) units. And for Pokémon Trainers who are bored with catching Pokémons in their room, they may do so by the swimming pool, or even inside the gym. A covered elevated walkway connects this condo with nearby commercial areas, such as Greenbelt Mall and Glorietta Mall, while the Ayala Triangle Gardens is just a block away via Ayala Avenue, where lure parties to attract Pokémons are usually held weekly.

2. Signa Residences

Signa Residences by Robinsons Land is a Pokéstop (its Pokémon trainer pit stop is aptly labeled Signa Designer Residences). These 30-story twin towers are located at the corner of V. A. Rufino and Valero Streets, and is next to PBCom Tower—the country’s tallest building and another Pokéstop.

Trainers residing at Signa Residences’ one-, two-, or three-bedroom units may walk around their 25-meter lap pool, 80-meter jogging path, landscaped and pocket gardens, indoor and outdoor playgrounds, music room, gym and studio, and residents’ lounge—where Wi-Fi access is available—while catching Pokémons.

3. Jazz Residences

Developed by SMDC, Jazz Residences’ Pokéstop is named Beauty Queen Mural. This is just one of the many murals along N. Garcia Street designated to be Pokéstops. Aside from being a Pokéstop to its four residential towers, it is also home to SM Jazz Mall, a one-level mall with a supermarket, hardware store, banks, and numerous dining establishments. Aspiring Pokémon masters may catch their favorite Pokémons at Jazz Residences’ swimming pools, function rooms, jogging paths, and more.

4. The Beacon Makati

Indicated by name as a Pokéstop, The Beacon Makati is described as “a high-rise condo in Pasong Tamo” in the Pokémon GO game. This three-tower condo, the tallest of which is Arnaiz Tower, has 50 stories. This condo estate is situated quite conveniently at the corner of Chino Roces and Arnaiz Avenues and Amorsolo Street. In addition to a private theater, The Beacon also has a sky lounge at its tallest tower’s roof deck, where trainers might encounter rare flying-type Pokémons.

POKÉSTOPS IN ORTIGAS CENTER

1. Discovery Suites

The sidewalk marker of Discovery Suites, a 220-unit serviced residences along ADB Avenue, is just one of the many Pokéstops in Ortigas Center. This upscale mixed-use tower is being managed by JTKC Land’s hospitality arm Discovery Leisure Company, the same company behind Discovery Primea in Makati and Boracay’s award-winning Discovery Shores.

2. BSA Twin Towers

Standing 221 meters above ground, BSA Twin Towers will definitely inspire you to reach the top as you play at one of the tallest structures in the country. Each of these two towers has 56 stories, with units ranging from studios to three-bedroom apartments. Its hotel-like amenities include a lagoon-shaped indoor swimming pool, a lap-pool, Jacuzzis, and a fitness center. This Pokéstop—also labeled BSA Twin Towers in the game—is located at the St. Francis Square Complex just behind SM Megamall.

3. St. Francis Shangri-La Place

The two-tower St. Francis Shangri-La Place at St. Francis Street (just beside the Shangri-La Plaza Mall) is home to the Pokéstop St. Francis Shangri-La Place Fountain. As expected, the stop can be found at the driveway fountain of this very luxurious residential condo. The Pokémon Trainers and residents of both towers may continue catching Pokémon from the comfort of their own units or walk to Shangri-La Plaza Mall, which is connected to the towers—for the residents’ exclusive use, of course—via a link-bridge.

POKÉSTOPS IN BONIFACIO GLOBAL CITY

1. Fort Palm Spring Condominium

The Pokéstop at the corner of 30th Street and 1st Avenue is named after this 28-story condo tower developed by First Global BYO Corporation. This mixed-use building is situated near BGC’s famous Burgos Circle, home to a collection of restaurants, a park, and many other Pokéstops. Aside from the pools and jogging paths, the Pokémon Trainers residing in this building can enjoy access to a game room, playground, and sky garden.

2. Forbeswood Heights

Megaworld’s Forbeswood Heights is a mid-rise condo complex in BGC’s Forbes Town Center area, close to Burgos Circle, and it has a fountain that also functions as a Pokéstop (which is named Forbeswood Heights Fountain). Pokémon Trainers at this condo development may head down to the tennis court and barbeque area, in addition to the usual roster of topnotch amenities, while they are on break from being a Pokémon Master. Across Forbeswood Heights is Forbeswood Parklane, another condo project by Megaworld, whose fountain is also a Pokéstop.

3. Two Serendra
Alveo Land’s Two Serendra along McKinley Parkway is part of the 12-hectare greater Serendra development (the other half being One Serendra by Ayala Land Premier). It has 10 towers (Aston, Meranti, Red Oak, Sequoia, Almond, Belize, Callery, Dolce, and Encino), and is a haven for Pokémon Trainers as it has two Pokéstops: Two Serendra Playground, situated at the playground, and Two Serendra Lobby Centerpiece. The latter is described in the game as “a giant centerpiece pot” that can be found at the condo’s veranda. It will surely be easy to recover lost and used items after catching numerous Pokémons in Two Serendra.
