Oyayi Children's Show Holds Grand Launch at Mind Museum

CBN Asia, in partnership with the National Council for Children’s Television (NCCT), is proud to present its newest kiddie show for the whole family entitled “Oyayi” during the grand launch held on November 18, 2016 at the Mind Museum Auditorium in Taguig city.

Oyayi, a Filipino word which means lullaby, is based on a children’s storybook written by Fernando Rosal Gonzalez. It was the chosen winner in the NCCT Nationwide Search for the Coolest Television Proposal in 2012. The show aims to create an awareness among the Filipino children about the environment, culture, family, and arts through educational and fun-filled episodes that teach them to be wise citizens at their young age.

Hosted by the delightful duo of Pocholo "The Voicemaster" Gonzales and Jing Castaneda of ABS-CBN, the grand launch was started by an opening prayer from Peter Kairuz, CBN Asia's President and CEO, who also thanked everyone involved in realizing the creation of the children's show.

The honorable and youngest councilor from District 2 of the Taguig Local government unit, Amparo Maria Zamora gave the welcome remarks, and also told us about how her niece, eventhough she was "maarte," loves the show very much.

To excite the students in the audience, TeleBobby,one of the characters in the Oyayi TV show whose head is shaped like a television, held a "Dok Pil in Da Blanks" warm-up trivia game. One eventually emerged as the winner but everyone who participated was given small prizes for the effort.

If you are wondering why it took three years for Oyayi to finally become part of Sunday mornings of national television? Oyayi director John Valdes Tan said during the interview on stage that it is because it is now very difficult to get an airtime mainly because not too many produce this kind of shows for TV. Together with NCCT Council Member Ramon Osorio, they are just glad that the show is finally running and now sharing a great deal of knowledge and values to children all over the country.

Atty. Alberto Muyot, DepEd Undersecretary and NCCT Supervising Administrator  gave the keynote message afterwards. He expressed his wish that maybe we could all make us of the Oyayi TV show featuring a timely, relatable and technologically-enhanced medium to educate our students so that instead of boring or making them fall asleep, they will be wide awake and interested in learning. He emphasized that the Oyayi or lullabye here was designed to liven up the learning experience of the children.

This was followed by a special screener of one episode of Oyayi featuring the Oyayi characters engaged in disaster preparedness topics. The information were presented in very graphically pleasing puppet and animation segments which made them more attractive for the children.

Immediately after the screener, the Oyayi cast were finally introduced beginning with Kuya Maki, the leader of the group which were supposedly all living in an island called Isla Oyayi. Kuya Maki, played by Icko Gonzalez, took over the introduction of the Oyayi cast namely Tama Raw as the very industrious Tamaraw, Bon Haribon as the valiant Philippine Eagle, Diva Butanding as the stylish Whale Shark, Tarsiera as the lovable Tarsier, Dok Pil as the brainy mouse-deer, and Kuwago Shibago, played by ventriloquists and puppet master Ruther Urquia, as the robotic owl which is the envious villain of the show, together with his sidekicks, the Tornilyons, and TeleBobby who we already saw earlier.

Kuya Maki encouraged everyone to patiently understand people like Kuwago Shibago so as not to bash or bully them if ever they encounter someone like him. Kuya Maki also led everyone to the latest Oyayi dance craze powered by their equally awesome and "nakaka-LSS" jingle. After an interview with the cast, everyone then got the opportunity to have some photo ops and selfies with the colorful Oyayi cast.

We prepared a special 30-minute video presentation containing most of the happenings from the grand launch taken from our video coverage including portions of the talks of the key personalities. However, we will also upload the individual full video segments soon for more convenient-viewing in smaller file sizes.

Definitely, the Oyayi TV show deserves more seasons. In fact, I would like it to be continued without any end so that our children would have a better alternative for learning from the television. Also, since we all know that online content is already here as the now and the future, with the popularity of smartphones, tablets and everything else that let us access online content, the creators, producers and sponsors of the Oyayi TV show have also created a mobile trivia game app that would soon be available. It is great that they also created an online version but it should not be limited to a game only. As they say, if we can't bring the children to TV, we can bring our content to them instead so putting up the episodes online would also be a great idea. If possible, the creators could put in a similar but different content for the online version but still capitalizing on the same characters and ideas.

In any case, congratulations to everyone involved in Oyayi TV. The show would be more successful if viewers would patronize the show. I encourage parents to introduce the show to their kids so they could at least stray away from the violent anime or cartoons that has become the primary distraction to children. We need to bring the children back to shows where moral values and character building reigns supreme above everything else. 

Also, awareness of the existence of the show is an effort we should all be lending a helping hand. I admire the mall tours, and maybe soon school tours, that the cast are doing in order to promote their show.
