Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What is PKA / History?

Philippine Kiteboarding Association is a newly organized group comprising of kitesurfing enthusiasts, and one of the members/sport disciplines under the Philippine Windsport Association. Other windsport groups under the PWA wing include Windsurfing, and Hobie Cats.

PKA was founded back in 2012, with members comprising of kitesurfing and winsurfing athletes, instructors, and businessmen, who share the same passion in kiteboarding. It's being governed by 7 core board officers from Boracay, Manila and Palawan, and currently headed by Jay Ortiz, an IKO certified instructor and Manila Kiteboarding Founder as its President.

Other board officers are: Liezl Tio (Boracay), Kiteboarding Champ Ken Nacor (Boracay), Carlo Leongson (Manila), Mark Antonio (Palawan), Bong Fernando (Boracay) and Jojo Tirol (Boracay)

2. What is PKA's Vision / Thrust?

PKA is aimed at not only promoting this extreme sport in our country, but also to develop young and fresh new talents that can represent our country in the international arena. Now that the Youth Olympic Games in 2018 in Buenos Aires, Argentina has decided to include kitesurfing, we're hopeful that the next medal hopefuls will come from our sport, and who knows, might even bring us the Gold that we've been longing for.

Currently, PKA is proud to have with us a young protégé that has not only added color to our local "freestyle" competition, but has already given our country pride and recognition in the international kiteboarding arena. Sixteen year old Christian Tio, a Filipino-Norwegian descent, is currently tagged as Asia's Top Kiteboard athlete and has recently bagged 2nd place in two consecutive years in the Freestyle category at the U15 Junior Virgin Kitesurfing World Championships in Costa Brava, Spain.

3. Can you tell us more about the competition disciplines?

Race – Athletes will be tasked to go around a race course, marked by buoys and the fastest to reach the finish line wins.
Freestyle – Requires a great deal of physical, mental and best in class kite and body maneuvers for big air jumps coupled with "tricks" while airborne. Successful tricks are rated based on difficulty level, and landing perfectly.

Hangtime – one of the most exciting and exhilarating part of the 3 disciplines, where athletes with the longest airtime (board off the water, until it lands) wins.

4. Can you tell us more about the competition brackets?

Kids – To encourage youngsters to the sport, and building new potential talents, kids are based on 17-below age can participate in the race event

Mens – Age range from 18 to 40 years.

Women – 18 and above

Novice – no age limit, but those that have not won any podium finish in past racing events of PKA.

Masters – 41 and above

5. Where are the 4 stops this year and the reasons why you chose them?

Boracay Island – This will be the 4th time that the competition will be held on the island. This is considered as the birthplace of the sport in the Philippines, and will always remain as a key stop. Noted as one of the kitesurfing Meccas in SEA, the Bulabog Beach side of Boracay has always been a key tourist destination for windsport enthusiasts, and one of the main drivers to its economy.
Cuyo Island, Palawan – This will be the 2nd time that PKA will be mounting its competition in the island this year, with the first visit during PKAs 3rd Tour last year. Normally, PKA would mount events 2x per venue, before it moves to another kitesurfing spot. The objective is to visit as many kite spots as possible, to promote the sport and to showcase new and exotic locations not only to excite for the local riders, but also for its international competitors as well.

Bantayan Island, Cebu – This will be the first time that the PKA will be mounting its competition in Cebu, and we've chosen Bantayan because of its pristine white sand beach, and tortoise clear waters. This will also be a good avenue for the contestants to try the sumptuous delicacies Cebu has to offer, like the Cebuchon, and some good old Sugba.

Cagbalete Island, Quezon – Manila based kiters have been riding the pristine waters of this island for about a year now. A recently discovered spot, the PKA aims at helping further build tourism here with the mounting of the last leg of the tour here in March. This will also be the first time that the PKA will be holding its event in this sleepy island town, and will be one of the showcase stops for Luzon fans can watch.

6. What are the Prizes at stake?

We're giving away a total of $40,000 in cash prize and kiteboarding gears to top 5 finishers per discipline. On top of that, we're raffling off Cabrinha goodies to all participants. Top finishers can win as much as P25,000, while 2nd and 3rd place winners will get P10,000 and P5,000 respectively.

7. How can one join and what are the fees involved?

A fixed fee of P1,500 per participant will already entitle them with 1 race jersey, an event shirt and full meal during the 3-day event. This will also include cocktails and drinks during select evenings. Event guests may also avail of the offer, and also entitles them to join the raffle contest.

For ICTSI:
1.       What inspired ICTSI to support this Kiteboarding event?

Not many people know this, but Mr. Enrique Razon, ICTSI Chairman and CEO, is an avid kiteboarding enthusiast. He has been doing the sport for more than 3 years now and has been shredding the waters of Aman Pulo in Palawan during his free time.

Jay Ortiz, the PKA President, happens to be Mr. Razon's kitesurfing instructor and during their kiteboarding sortie in Aman Pulo, Jay inquired with Mr. Razon if he can support the tour. Mr. Razon happily obliged and the rest, is history.

2.       What other sports ICTSI is helping promote?

ICTSI has been known to also sponsor Golf Tournaments, which is Mr. Razon's other passion sport, and has been known to sponsor (airfares, allowances) athletes from Golf, and Kiteboarding as well. Kiteboarding athletes include Duque Delos Santos, and Christian Tio.
