In a display of unity and solidarity, women senators from different political affiliations today filed a resolution denouncing the plan by some members of the House of the Representatives (HoR) to show before a committee hearing Senator Leila De Lima's alleged sex video.
Senate Resolution No. 184, initiated by Akbayan Senator Risa Hontiveros, expressed "the sense of the Senate" saying that the proposal to show De Lima's alleged sex video is "illegal, violative of inter-parliamentary courtesy and decency, and an affront to women's dignity."
"Sisterhood"
"Today, we cross party lines and temporarily set aside our differences. Our sisterhood and strong bond and solidarity as women brought us together to oppose the misogyny and sexism of those who think we are lesser beings and thus, deserve to be shamed," Hontiveros said.
"Today, we close ranks to fight for the dignity of every woman," Hontiveros added.
"State-sponsored sexism"
Hontiveros said the plan to play the former justice secretary's alleged sex video is an affront to all. She described it as "state-sponsored sexism."
"It is an attack against our mothers, sisters, wives and people with different sexual orientation and gender identity or expression. Using taxpayer's money, and the legislature, they are promoting the systemic degradation of women. We will not allow this," Hontiveros asserted.
The resolution signed by Senators Cynthia Villar, Nancy Binay, Grace Poe and Loren Legarda said the planned showing of the video will violate Republic Act 9995, or the Anti-photo or Video Voyeurism Act of 2009, and Republic Act 4200, or the Anti Wiretapping Law.
The resolution also said the plan violates the time-honored principle of inter-parliamentary courtesy given to incumbent lawmakers.
