Visita Iglesia 2015: Churches in Switzerland and Germany

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Water Bottle: Checked
Power Bars : Checked
Train Tickets: Checked
All systems go.

Good Friday, 2015. I decided to go on Visita Iglesia just on the spur of the moment this year. No route planned, no time plan, no stress.
As a backgrounder, I have been doing my Visita Iglesia in the last five years. I am a Filipina who has been a resident of Switzerland in the last 18 years. I am divorced, have an only child, totally single in the last five years and I consider myself quite lucky to live in this beautiful country.

This year is the 6th year I am going to do my Visita Iglesia in Switzerland. Since, I told myself that I am not going to do it with stress this year -- I found myself going to Constance, Germany too.

In the olden times (during my younger years), I used to do Visita Iglesia with my Mother. The rule is, we have to go and visit 7 churches or chapels on Maundy Thursday by simple walking from church-to-church. We don't carry any food with us because there are some families who opens their houses -- offers the people going on Visita Iglesia some refreshments - bread, water, sago at gulaman, fruits and all for free as part of the home-owners house "panata" for a "pakain" on Visita Iglesia days.

Wazzup Pilipinas!

To raise awareness and understanding about hemophilia and related bleeding disorders, the Department of Health (DOH) and various non-government organizations joined the Hemophilia Association of the Philippines for Love & Service (HAPLOS) in marking the World Hemophilia Day at Glorietta Mall in Makati City on April 11 to 12.

This event seeks to unite patients, health care professionals, advocacy groups, governments and industry partners to make the world better for the local bleeding disorder community,” said Ric Felipe, president of HAPLOS.

During the opening ceremony, DOH Undersecretary Dr. Vicente Belizario expressed the agency’s commitment in helping those with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders to address the challenges they are currently facing, especially in closing the gaps in care and treatment.

Tire Recycling Competition Announced by GT Radial Philippines

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Imagine replacing 1 tire of the roughly 3.6 million automobiles found in the Philippines alone and estimating a 1 square meter for every tire, it'll  take only two years to fill the entire 35- square kilometer surface of Metro Manila. There would be as much as 140 million discarded tires within only 10 years which is the same as the projected population.

Dumping of used tires in the garbage, dumpsites or landfills cayuses health hazards especially when they are burned causing pollution in the air. Too many tires needed for artificial reefs on our shorelines or sea already. There is really a need to find a better solution on how we could dispose, reuse or recycle these used tires.

Thus GT Radial Philippines has though of a competition to help in the preservation of the environment. It is a timely mission to be hosting a tire up-cycling idea called GT Radial Untired - a challenge open to  all individuals and organizations within Metro Manila to come up with the best sustainable, scalable and replicable tire recycling ideas. DEadline of submission is on June 5, 2015 which is World Environment Day.

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Volkswagen PH Highlights Child Safety in Manila International Auto Show

Wazzup Pilipinas!

According to the road safety facts from the World Health Organization, about 1.24 million globally die each year as a result of road traffic crashes (nearly 3,400 deaths a day). Wearing a seat-belt can reduce fatalities by up to 50% and among rear-seat car passengers by up to 75%. Child restraint systems, such as child seats for infants and booster seats for older children, decrease the risk of death in a crash by about 70% for infants and up to 80% for small children.

Volkswagen Philippines, the official importer and distributor of VW vehicles launched in the 2015 edition of the Manila International Auto Show (MIAS) the VW Child Safety Initiative (CSI) campaign to support child safety on Philippines roads.

The Philippine campaign is part of the global CSI strategy of the Wolfsburg-based automaker which already rolled out in various countries around the world. The CSI is based on two main pillars. One is the prevention of accidents by teaching and educating parents and kids about possible dangers on the roads. The other is the passive safety inside the VW vehicles by using child seats together with the factory standard safety systems like airbags, active collision systems and the ISOFIX child seat fixations.

At its exhibition booth, VW Philippines set up a “child safety corner” with a simulated road to heighten awareness on road safety, as well as to teach the motoring public how child seats greatly increase safety for younger passengers. The “child safety corner” had two major components: (1) the junior driving course and (2) the child seat corner.

One: Valor of Champions Preview Anatpong Bunrad Vs. Geje Eustaquio

Wazzup Pilipinas!

For Geje Eustaquio, ONE: VALOR OF CHAMPIONS will be just the sort of homecoming that he needs to continue his climb up the ladder.

Eustaquio will take on Anatpong Bunrad in a key flyweight match on 24 April 2015 from the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay, Philippines.

Along with the featured 125-pound attraction, Ben Askren defends his ONE Welterweight World Championship against Luis Santos and Mark Striegl faces Casey Suire in a bantamweight bout.

Regardless of the end result, Eustaquio’s 2014 ONE Flyweight World Championship fight with Adriano Moraes at ONE: RISE OF THE KINGDOM was only a positive.

Even though he found himself caught by Moraes, who is widely-considered one of the best 125-pound fighters in the world, Eustaquio gave him everything he could handle for a round-plus.

Before slipping up vs. Moraes, the 26-year-old Lakay MMA member had won two straight under the ONE banner, scoring decisions over Kentaro Watanabe and Eugene Toquero.

He dealt Toquero his first career loss in 2013 and also bested Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion Alex Silva back in 2012 in only his fourth career MMA match.

Microsoft Founder Bill Gates was in Laguna for a Confidential Visit at IRRI

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Inquirer.net reports that Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates recently visited the International Rice Research Institute in Los Banos, Laguna according to the online news reliable sources.
The American philanthropist arrived at 8 a.m. of April 7 Tuesday at the IRRI headquarters aboard a private helicopter and left after a two-hour “confidential visit.”
The rice institute’s spokesperson would not deny nor confirm the visit after IRRI was requested for comments.   The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation supports the research and development of IRRI’s Golden Rice, a genetically manipulated rice variety that contains beta carotene."

It is either strange or admirable for the Microsoft founder for being too silent and low profile about his visit to the Philippines.

We all know how popular Bill Gates is and he should have been top news which is why it was surprising that only Inquirer was able to pick up on this news.

It Figures Skin Care and Body Shaping - Makati: The Journey to a Better Face and Body

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Thank you to It Figures Skin Care and Body Shaping - Makati branch for the regular Fat-Burning Radio Frequency (RF) treatments.

I'm already at my 4th visit to get rid of my double chin. They say it will take around 6 to 8 sessions before we could totally burn the unwanted fat but I also need to complement it with right exercise and good diet, otherwise it will just come back.

However, there are some saying the improvements are noticeable already. Just a little off the fat but noticeably better than before.

It Figures Skin Care and Body Shaping - Makati offers non-invasive facial, skin care and slimming services for both men and women.

Thanks to Marnel, who was mostly the one attending to my treatments and, of course, to Gernie for allowing me to experience such an opportunity. I hope to write well the end results of their efforts, and hoping it will be a success.

Josie Rizal, Andrea Bonifacio and Other Tekken 7 Filipino Characters

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Nope! There's only Josie Rizal announced as a new Filipino character among the three new ones of the Tekken 7 fighting game. The Andrea Bonifacio is fictitious, but why not - Emilia Aguinaldo, Apolinaria Mabini, Marcela Del Pilar, Juana Luna, Nene Aquino and all the rest of our male Pinoy heroes created with a female version seems interesting to watch fight each other on screen.

Or is it not a fitting tribute since it's a fighting game after all. Not really promoting camaraderie or good traits. Even Jose Rizal fought with his pen - which is supposed to be mightier than the sword or the gun. But a fist may be different - still it's promoting violence, and who are addicted to these games bit our kids who will be influenced by these arcade games.

The other two characters new in the game are Jin Kazama and his evil supernatural alter ego Devil Jin. This makes Josie Rizal the newest female character of Tekken 7.

But all the legal aspect issues and the controversies hounding the new character patterned after Jose Rizal may cause the creators of Tekken 7 to delete the character from the game. The name was obviously taken from our national hero Jose Rizal's name but I don't think the outfit makes any resemblance. A cropped yellow top and a red and blue skirt is not really Jose Rizal's type of wardrobe. Though the character is skilled in eskrima and kickboxing, our national hero would also not be fighting his way out of a conflict which means it is not an actual portrayal. It's only the name that they adapted and nothing more.

Health Cube's Complimentary Customized Executive Health Care Package for Media

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Health is wealth - so an annual medical check-up at Health Cube in Promenade, Greenhills was where we spent a few hours of our time in a n effort to determine if we are well within the healthy zone.

April 1 was not a fool's day for me and my wife since we got a truly special complimentary medical check-up designed for media. This is almost similar to the very basic package, but good enough to determine if we are in good health already.

Among the any perks of being a member of the media is these kind of services offered in exchange of writing about our experience. This serves as part of their marketing initiative to let us experience their health care services. A tour of their facility was conducted already at a previous visit so what was left that day was a complimentary customized Executive Health Care package.
Health Cube is a premier medical facility in the heart of Metro Manila that provides personalized outpatient health care. The tests scheduled to be given to us were CBC, Urinalysis, RBS, Uric Acid, SGPT, SGOT, Creatinine, ECG, Chest X-Ray, PFT and Stress Test. We were asked to be there at 8 am. We got there a bit earlier but was surprised they started the check-up even before 8 am.

Barangay Nutrition Scholars' 3rd National Conference

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The Barangay Nutrition Scholars are volunteers with special functions more diverse than the ordinary health worker. They are the special ones trained to be more attentive to details and with the guts to go beyond the common tasks, and even surpassing the role by becoming more than just a volunteer. He or she would have the daunting tasks of negotiating with the heads of the LGU for continued or more support since their tasks would definitely need the cooperation of the local government unit especially the heads from the Barangay Chairperson to the Mayor of the city or municipality.

I was amused that these BNSs are also given training programs on how to dress up properly and to effectively communicate with heads and superiors. These are knowledge that are worth learning even for health works as the scope of advocating for nutrition should not be solely focused on specifically related training programs. The overall physical, intellectual, social and even mental attributes of an individual should be enhanced as well no matter what profession.

They've mentioned the role of a BNS may even become more popular for the society since they have close encounters with the people themselves. Thus some have leveled up towards higher positions in government. It is admirable that still many of them stayed as a BNS because they truly have loved their advocacy.

Yaya Meal Hullabaloo: Balesin Island Club Is In Deep Shit Because of Oblivious CEO

Wazzup Pilipinas!

Many are reacting to this "yaya meal" hullabaloo... What's your opinion?

Re-post from Balesin Island Club:

"We at Balesin Island Club do not understand this entire hullabaloo about the “yaya meal.” Any talk of discrimination is inappropriate. In fact, if the guest or member chooses to have the Club serve the “yaya” tenderloin steak and lobster thermidor, we will gladly serve it to the yaya. “Yaya meal” is merely an accommodation and an option for the guest for their “yaya”. H...ence, we do not serve this meal if there is no instruction at all from the guest for a “yaya meal” to be served to a “yaya”.

Incidentally, the yayas are thrilled with their meals because these are deliciously prepared by our chefs, as well, for our operating staff at Balesin.

Mike M. Asperin
CEO & Island Director
Balesin Island Club"

A bunch are saying they should have hires a PR to answer such issues since the CEO named Mike M. Asperin was obviously oblivious to the real reason why many people are reacting violently to his statement.

The fact that this place has a so called discriminating "yaya meal" is already a sign that the management, or the people running the place, are OK with offensive terminologies that distinguished their VIPs from their maids or helpers....and in the case of the CEO, their "operating staff" who are also thrilled being served a "yaya meal."

But was the management just complying with the request of a majority of their members? Thus making most of their members the affluent spoiled brats?

1,700+ Students Now Equipped with a Simple Financial Plan

Wazzup Pilipinas!

On March 19, Andrew Stotz, CFA, an award-winning financial analyst with more than two decades of experience in Asia, held a live event at Ugnayang La Salle, De La Salle University – Dasmariñas based on his upcoming book, You Won’t Get Rich in the Stock Market… Until You Change the Way You Think about It.

Roughly 1,700 students were in attendance at this seminar, where Stotz taught them about the 12 investment principles from his new book and showed each of them how to secure their own financial future. He also made sure that, by the end of the seminar, each student had made his or her own personal financial plan. This way, each student would have a roadmap to follow to reach financial independence. “It’s very gratifying to see that many people writing out their first financial plan. I feel like I’m making a difference, helping these students,” said Andrew.

In order to engage the students in the seminar, he asked each student to stand and flip a coin over and over, until only those who had flipped heads or tails ten times in a row were left standing. This was his way of illustrating that repeated stock market success can just be based on chance, and you can’t predict who will flip heads ten times in a row, any more than you can practice coin flipping to increase your chances. One student at the event said, “Mr. Stotz not only has a way with stocks but also has a way on reaching out to people.”

Epson Powers Projection Mapping Installation at Art In The Park

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The latest edition of ‘Art In The Park’ featured a new, creative installation – a welcome change from the usual paintings and sculptures. Artist Derek Tumala created a ‘light installation’ that made use of projection mapping technology.

Polyflora’ -- a mural that plays on the synchronisation of geometry & light derived from the shapes of the plants – made viewers appreciate the distinctive appeal of using projection mapping to create art.

“I was thinking of how I can make an art installation that can be organically weaved into the park's aesthetics. Plants are the main component of the park where Art in the Park is initiated. The idea of creating Polyflora, a sculptural & mural piece, got me inspired on how plants organically form geometric patterns - often in repetition - and how it can form an abstract formation. By applying light through video mapping, it creates a mesmerizing presentation,” said ‘Polyflora’ creator Derek Tumala.

For his inspired installation, Tumala gives credit to the Epson projectors. “What's most important for my video mapping project is the quality of light that the projector provides. The Epson projector has excellent brightness that is great for video mapping projection. Details, contrast ratio, and colors are accurate and it transformed the illuminated surface into a mesmerizing piece. The transformative value that projection mapping creates can only be effective with a high quality projector like Epson,” added Tumala.

UP and Nokia Open World-Class Learning Facility in Telecommunications Engineering

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The University of the Philippines (UP), the country’s premier higher education institution, in partnership with Nokia-Manila Technology Center (Nokia-Manila TC) has recently inaugurated a new engineering laboratory in its Diliman campus in an effort to provide quality hands-on education and training to telecommunications engineering students.

Located within the university’s Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute (EEEI), the UP-Nokia Telecommunications Engineering Laboratory features Nokia Networks’ state-of-the-art equipment, including a radio access network that can connect user devices to one of Nokia Networks core network in Asia. A full class can experience the equipment, providing them with real-life experience on telecommunications operations.

The new learning facility helps the state university stay true to as one of the few centers of excellence and development in the Philippines. "Wireless and cellular telecommunications are normally just taught from textbooks,” said EEEI Director Dr. Joel Marciano Jr. “But with the new laboratory our students will actually see the interaction between mobile phones and base stations. It’s experiential, hands-on learning that will be even more effective.”

The laboratory also marks a new chapter in UP and Nokia-Manila TC’s long-standing partnership when the two institutions first launched the Teach In the University Program with the same aim of raising the country’s telecommunications education.

Eugene Toquero Ready to Embrace the Home-Love from Filipinos at ONE: Valor Of Champions

Wazzup Pilipinas!

For Eugene Toquero, ONE: Valor of Champions will allow him the chance to shine in front of his native people.

Toquero and fellow 125-pound fighter Brianata Rosadhi are set for the 24 April card from the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines.

A native of the host country, Toquero will look to impose his will through Muay Thai, which is his strength.

After starting his career with five straight wins, all of which came via finish, the flyweight was topped by Geje Eustaquio in his ONE debut back in late 2013.

Eustaquio showed Toquero what he needed to work on, as his striking was muted by counter punches and being a step quicker. On the ground, Toquero was unsuccessful on a takedown attempt that led to the eventual winner landing plenty of solid strikes.

Tech Island 2.0: Mastering the Digital Wave

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The Philippines has seen an exponential growth in its small and medium enterprises (SMEs). According to the Department of Trade and Industry, the number of SMEs in the country has increased 66% from 492,510 in 1995 to 816,759 in 2011. They comprise 99.6% of all registered businesses in the country and provide jobs to 3.9 million people.

Along with the growth of SMEs is the increase of the country’s internet users. The latest statistics from Global Web Index shows that the Philippines outperformed the internet population growth of its Asian counterparts, growing 531% from 2009 to 2014. The nation currently has the 14th largest internet population, with 44 million of its citizens having an online presence.

SMEs need to keep up with the quick adaptation of Filipinos to the latest technologies. Now included in business maturity is the presence of a digital outlet. However, having an online presence isn’t enough: Filipinos take content seriously and consider it as an important step towards launching a strong social presence. The question, then, is how SMEs can grab the attention of the public while informing them of the offerings that they can get.

This is how PLDT SME Nation helps SMEs. With its goal of making SMEs more reachable to Filipinos, PLDT SME Nation has constantly partnered with its clients to make the communication between businesses and the Philippine market more engaging and informative. With this, PLDT SME Nation will open Tech Island 2.0.

Pro Earth Run 2015: Into Your Hands, I Commit Mother Earth

Wazzup Pilipinas!

We are all saying that we love our planet, yet every candy wrapper we throw away carelessly on the streets or the rivers signifies how weak our commitments are.

We often forget about the little things that would also eventually bring forth repercussions if we continue to become unmindful of their consequences.

Earth Day Network Philippines Chairman, Dr. Metodio Palaypay, reminded us: "This is why we never get tired of telling people that Earth Day must be everyday, everywhere, for everyone.”

In the media briefing for Pro Earth Run 2015, Dr. Palaypay underscored the critical role of media in bringing out the message of earth care to the public when he addressed the members of the media last 31 March 2015 at the Merrell Concept Store, Market! Market! Bonifacio Global City.

In the end, he entreated the members of the press, “Into your hands, I commit Mother Earth.”

Meanwhile, DENR Director for Strategic Communication and Initiatives Service Jesus Enrico Moises Salazar commended Earth Day Network Philippines for the environmental work it has been doing over the years.

“While the result of your labor may not always be immediately felt, it will eventually yield something good for the country.”

Philippines Celebrates World Hemophilia Day

Wazzup Pilipinas!

In celebration of the World Hemophilia Day on April 17, the Hemophilia Association of the Philippines for Love & Service (HAPLOS) will spearhead a national gathering of different Hemophilia groups and support organizations at the Glorietta Mall in Makati City on April 11 to 12.

Dubbed “Count Me In,” the two-day activity seeks to raise awareness and understanding about hemophilia and related bleeding disorders. The event expects to gather around 300 persons with these conditions, along with their families and friends.

Hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, inherited platelet disorders, and other factor deficiencies are lifelong bleeding disorders that prevent blood from clotting properly.

People with bleeding disorders do not have enough of a particular clotting factor, a protein in blood that controls bleeding. The severity of a person’s bleeding disorder usually depends on the amount of clotting factor that is missing or not functioning. People with hemophilia can experience uncontrolled bleeding that can result from a seemingly minor injury. Bleeding into joints and muscles causes severe pain and disability while bleeding into major organs, such as the brain, can cause death.
