An Afternoon of D-Coding with Biobalance

I was surprised to find out that I am Vitamin D deficient. This was according to the test conducted on me via a quick method using just a few drips of my blood pricked from one of my fingers. The tool was like that from a pregnancy test but instead of dripping urine, they used blood fro the testing.

According to the invitation we got, Vitamin D deficiency is now considered a global pandemic. Why does it matter? New research shows it's no longer just for calcium and bone health. Vitamin D deficiency is now linked to conditions like fatigue, depression, risk of pre-eclampsia, and diseases like diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer's, and psoriasis!

This prompted me to attend the event held on November 12, 2015 at Biobalance situated at the Soho Central building at the Greenfield District along Shaw Boulevard. I assumed there will be free testing, and if ever they find me Vitamin D deficient, they will provide a corresponding solutionor cure.

We were informed that today's lifestyle, of being mostly indoors under roofed and airconditioned housing, establishments and other facilities, and the farming and preparation of our food (vegetables, fruits, poultry and similar sources, has changed the amount of Vitamin D we receive on a regular basis. At an afternoon of "D"-coding with BioBalance consultant, Dr. Stan Chua (Functional Medicine Practitioner) gave us more reasons why we needed to bask under the sun more often than stay indoors in the comfort of our homes.


Dr. Stan Chua was the one who oriented us about the many facts about Vitamin D deficiency, and how our convenient and high-tech lifestyle has made many of us lacking of the necessary amount needed by our bodies.


We heard the latest on the sunshine vitamin and each one of us found out our levels of Vitamin D using the test4d vitamin d test kit, as well as the use of the Inbody machine which gave us a few more revelations on our body conditions. The Inbody machine showed an assessment of our body composition, muscle-fat, obesity, segmental lean, Extracellular Water to Total Body Water (ECW/TBW) ratio, body fat - lean body mass control, segmental fat, basal metabolic rate, and visceral fat level.


I was not afraid of being pricked for blood samples as I have done it several times already. I even donated blood a few times already so I am used to the slight pain and sight of blood.


Just like a pregnancy test, you are said to be positively Vitamin D deficient if two red lines appear on the test4D Vitamin D test kit. Mine had two lines so I was among those deficients.

Those who were Vitamin D deficient were given 5000 IU of Biobalance Vitamin D3, while the others who met the standards were given 1000 IU.

Meanwhile, the Inbody testing showed that my visceral fat level, among other measurements pertaining to body fat, was higher than normal so I was requested to work on my daily routine by incorporating more exercise and better diet.

Local research shows that 7 out of 10 Filipinos are low on this vital nutrient. For Filipinos who live right by the sun-drenched equator, it’s ironic that we are largely Vitamin D deficient. This is based on a 2013 study conducted by the Philippine College of Occupational Medicine (PCOM) and the Philippine Neurological Association (PNA). Participants were office workers in Metro Manila.

Considering that Vitamin D is absorbed by the body through the sun, one would think that Filipinos are “over-sunned.” “But, inadequate sun exposure is extremely prevalent in the Philippines—surprised?” posed Dr. Stan Chua, a Functional Medicine Practitioner trained in the Institute for Functional Medicine, Washington DC, USA, and Health Optimization Medicine Consultant in the BioBalance Institute.


We need to level up on the “D.” Here are top 6 reasons why we should consciously make every day a (Vitamin) D day:

1. Tired of being tired?

According to the Vitamin D Council, deficiency in Vitamin D may cause low energy, including depression and chronic fatigue.
