FlipTrip's Sun and Soul Takes Place in Zambales

Wazzup Pilipinas!

The rain may have delayed the event for a few days, but every good thing must always push through no matter how many times we encounter misfortunes. Even if it means waiting for a few more days, we simply had to follow the sun for a brighter set of activities. Though no gloomy weather can really put us down, the warmth of the sunshine was better than remaining indoors due to the rains. We really want to enjoy the most memorable experience so that we could later on share the stories to everyone.

Since not too many travel-related organizations offer the same set of packages, performers and activities, the event was attended by more than a hundred participants. Everyone gathered in Zambales for the most soulful and inspiring weekend of the year. Sun and Soul 2015 took place in Liwliwa, San Felipe, Zambales—a small town known for being a surfing spot, as well as its friendly locals.

Team FlipTrip envisioned this event as a collaboration with the community of Liwliwa, as everyone’s—including the locals’—effort helped make this come alive. Local FlipTrip partners, The Circle Hostel, Kila Bot Sir Ping Spot, Kapitan’s Liwa, Board Culture Liwliwa (BCL) and Mommy Phoebe’s collaborated with the team to prepare Liwliwa for the event.

A day before Sun and Soul, everyone in town were doing different things: level out the roads, paint the signs around the venue, and put up lights and decorations for the jam session. Truly it was an inspiring sight to see the community work together to make it an event to remember.

Sun: Dreamcatchers, Yoga, Ukeleles and Live Painting

During the day, participants had access to all workshops. Everyone was free to roam around and choose to learn making dreamcatchers, playing the ukelele, practicing yoga, or watching Dee Jae Paeste do graffiti live.

At he dream catcher workshop, people sat on the sand and made friends in front of a big dreamcatcher installation, while Cherry Ann Fulo (Cherry Oh) demonstrated how to make them. At the same time, The Four Strings serenaded us at the Circle Hostel with the ukulele workshop.

Later in the afternoon, Shiela Matias led the yoga practice and helped everyone find their calm and flow in Kapitan Liwa’s. A few steps away, a crowd of people gathered to see Dee Jae Paeste do live graffiti with colors bursting through the canvas. According to Dee Jae, he just soaks up the ambiance of the place and does his art from there.

Everyone had a blast sampling out Tyang’s oat chicken and the various special grubs in Liwa, surfing, going to the falls, and just bumming around at the beach.

Soul: SUD, Over the Weekend, Pusakalye, and the Pundaquit Virtuosi

Night fell and the crowd started gathering in Kapitan’s Liwa for the music jam sessions. The place was strewn with lights and lit the dark night. At the back of the venue was a bonfire where people are free to roast marshmallows (Seagrassroots Movement gave them out for free). Locals and festival goers alike were serenaded by SUD, Pusakalye, Over the Weekend and Mykell Gozon.

Pusakalye’s harmony perfectly jived with the chill beach vibes. Their songs kept everyone swaying to the beat. Over the Weekend kept the crowd going with their heartfelt songs. In the background one can faintly hear the sound of the waves crashing to the shore, as if to join the music.

As the night deepened, SUD serenaded us with original tracks and amazing vocals. Everyone was having a great time listening to the artists perform with their old and newfound friends alike. Cherry Oh even did an impromptu fire dance!

What surprised us all was a violin performance by the Pundaquit Virtuosi. The orchestra was composed of young scholars from Casa San Miguel. Who knew that beaches and classical music can go well together?

Good Vibrations in Z Land

Everyone had a blast in Sun and Soul, from the community, to the artists and the participants-- it was truly a gathering of kindred spirits.

See you next year for more inspiration!
