ICT 4 Biz: E-Commerce Championed for PWDs

Wazzup Pilipinas!

We believe everyone is in equal footing when it comes to online work. This is because the job requires a lot of creativity and logical thinking which we can do at the comforts of our own homes rather than out there among the hustle and bustle of the corporate world. I envy those who get to avoid the traffic congestion or the long queue at every public transportation spot including the MRT or LRT train stations.

The work at home professionals don't suffer as we do who would normally sweat it out amidst a huge crowd and exposed to all the dust and pollution, including the dangers of getting robbed or swindled in the dangerous streets of Manila. I've had my share of pickpockets and other modus operandi just to rob me of my hard-earned money.

The ICT 4 Biz: Connecting Your Business with the Right People, held last June 17, 2015 at the Sequioa Hotel located in Quezon City, was particularly aimed to provide decent online employment opportunities for all. This was part of the ICT Expo 2015 with a theme of ICT For All: No Juan Left Behind series of events celebrating June as the ICT Month

What was very interesting about the event was it highlighted Persons With Disabilities (PWDs). We are now looking into e-commerce as a viable source of work opportunities for our PWDs. Since the skills required are more about online expertise rather than having all limbs functional, it makes sense that we should be tapping them who really deserves both our attention and admiration.

PWDs performed a dance number for us during the intermission

A performance from a PWD serenaded us with her lovely song number

Gus Vibal of Vibal Group, Inc.
The morning started with some messages from key personalities coming from agencies like DOST-ICTO (Bettina Quimson, Deputy Executive Director), DSWD (Parisya Taradji, Undersecretary) and NCDA (Carmen Reyes-Zubiaga, Acting Executive Director), as well as a special message from Gus Vibal of the Vibal Group who was one of the major sponsors of the event. I was very late so I only got to witness Gus on stage. It was my first time to go to the Sequioa hotel so I had to make extra effort looking for it.

I was especially proud of the intermission number composed of PWD teens who performed exceptionally well for us even with their limitations. The exhibitors were also allowed to do their 3-minute presentations on stage devoting the rest of the morning knowing all about them.

I was actually surprised that one of the speakers of the break-out session that I attended was blind. I never really noticed her disability not until somebody mentioned it during the program. It was so inspiring that she was even a book author. Wow! I was deeply astonished finding out that I am learning how to write a book from her from her short talk about How to Start a Book Writing Career.

Krissy Bisda from Human Resource & Training for Work Innovation Thru Enabled Development
Krissy Bisda started her talk with workshop where she divided us into groups and let us devise a story based on elements she listed down on a piece of paper. It was something different for every group so we eventually told our crafted stories after a few minutes of brainstorming.

She then proceeded to teach us us the different kinds of writing like Persuasive, Descriptive, Expository, Narrative, and Compare & Contrast, She then shared the 11 tips for beginning writers. Due to the lack of time, she had to rush the discussion. Of course, the main requirement for book writing is to be able to publish our book for everyone to read so its either we get [published by a renowned publishing company like Vibal or self-publishing our own works. There is an alternative called Books on Demand which allows the printing of books only when there's a demand for it, as well as other online publishing sites for e-books.

Other speakers from the breakout session included 199Jobs founder Fitz Villafuerte, who talked about How to Be a Successful Entrepreneur; Roselle Reig, CEP of Global Knowledge Philippines who discussed Gusto Kong Mag-Negosyo, Pero Paano?; and Marv De Leon, founder of Freelance Blend who gave us pointers at his talk entitled Creating and Monetizing your Freedom.

Marv De Leon of Freelance Blend
You can actually attend only two break-out sessions so I had to choose  Marv's talk since I do want to know how to monetize my efforts as a freelancer. Marv left us with 3 action steps to begin monetizing our freedom as a freelancer: open an account in Freelancer, Upwork, Raket.ph or 199Jobs; Buy our own domain specifically using our name as the domain name; and choose a blog platform that we are comfortable with of which he highly recommends Wordpress as being more flexible and customizable than otehr blog platforms. He also recommend uploading Vlogs or video blogs and podcasts with our interest or peg as initial upload.

Presentation of exhibitors
Apart from the four (4) breakout sessions, ICT 4 Biz also connected the audience to businesses that particularly catered to PWDs through an exhibit of companies. Some of these companies are involved in web graphics and design, animation, as well as gaming and transcription services.

ICT4 Biz was held in line with the 2015 Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Month of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) ICT Office.
