Wazzup Pilipinas!

You can increase your chances of survival during a storm with careful preparation. During emergencies, your priority should always be the lives of people. Protecting your property from damages caused by typhoons are best done by studying your insurance options such as house insurance or comprehensive car insurance.

Here are 18 useful tips to help you survive the next super typhoon.

Before the Typhoon

1) Store enough food and water that can last your family for at least four days. Storing food that doesn’t need to be cooked is best for emergencies. You can could also store charcoal or get an extra LPG tank so that you can heat food even when the power runs out.

2) Don’t forget medicines! You should have the basics like wound care equipment and fever medicines in your first-aid kit. Also stock up on prescription medicines for you and others in your household.

3) Keep updated on the weather reports. Know the path of the storm and how fast it’s moving.

4) Inspect your house and fix any broken parts. Focus on the parts that needs to work properly during a storm such as the roof and windows. Affix storm shutters for your windows to prevent these from shattering due to strong winds.

5) Have your mobile phones fully charged before the storm. Charge your power banks too!

6) Evaluate your surroundings. Do you live beside the sea or near a mountain? You are prone to storm surges if you live by the sea and landslides if you live near a mountain side. Move to an evacuation shelter before the storm.

7) Move appliances and belongings in a high ground. But secure heavy appliances so that these don’t fall on anybody.

8) Have a backpack ready with the essentials such as extra clothes, food, radio, and first-aid kit. This lets you easily evacuate your home when necessary. Put all of your stuff in sealed plastic bags to keep them as dry as possible.

9) Store emergency hotline numbers on your phone. The Red Cross emergency hotline is 143. The NDRRMC’s hotline number is (02) 911-1406 and (02) 912-2665. Best of all, you should have the number of your barangay officials on your phone as they are in a better position to help you in case of disasters.

10) LISTEN TO THE AUTHORITIES! If they say it’s time to evacuate to a storm shelter before the storm arrives, DO SO!

During and After a Typhoon

11) Stay indoors but be mindful of your environment. Landslides and flash floods have killed thousands during typhoons.

12) Do not wade through floodwaters. You can be electrocuted and or catch a disease.

13) Stay away from trees. You can get hit with falling branches.

14) If faced with rising flood waters inside your home, empty water jugs make good floatation devices.

15) Stay awake as much as possible when the storm hits. Landslides kill the most people when it happens at night and when people are sleeping so be vigilant about this danger.

16) If you have to evacuate your home, turn off the main switches and head towards the evacuation shelter. Avoid flood prone areas going to the shelter such as those near rivers.

17) Beware of dangerous animals that may have sought shelter in your house during the typhoon such as snakes.

18) When entering your home after a flood, watch out for any live wires that are under water.

PAGASA is already warning that the Philippines should brace for stronger typhoons this year because of the El Niño phenomenon. Remember Ondoy and Milenyo? The Philippines was hit with those two destructive typhoons when we were in the middle of another El Niño.

Since the Philippines is hit with an average of 20 cyclones every year, it’s always good to be ready for the next powerful storm.
