Mu Sigma Phi Fraternity Presents Reverb: Echoing Awareness through the Arts
Wazzup Pilipinas!
On May 4-8, The Mu Sigma Phi Fraternity of the UP College of Medicine will launch its project entitled “OBRAx: Extraordinary Art by Extraordinary People”, a week-long set of events aimed at empowering differently-abled artists from the visual and performing arts. Their flagship event entitled “Reverb: Echoing Awareness through the Arts” is scheduled on May 8, 2015 from 7:00- 10:00 pm at the Pilar Hidalgo Lim Auditorium of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines National Headquarters, Padre Faura Street, Ermita, Manila.
The event is a concert showcasing the performances of differently-abled artists and groups such as Young Voices Musikability, Vell Baria , Thara Santiago and Franco Cagayat from the Autism Society of the Philippines (ASP), Nica Escasinas (ASP), Chaelda Del Carmen, Joy Disability Mission, Inc. and St. Francis School – VSA Arts Philippines. Inc. Special performances from the Mu Band and Mayonnaise will also be featured.
The event aims to empower differently-abled artists by raising awareness about the situation of differently-abled artists in the Philippines and showing the world that despite their situation, they too are capable of creating extraordinary art may it be through the visual arts, music, or dance.
In line with this advocacy, the Fraternity also recognizes the importance of hearing for the development of young children. Children who have hearing impairments from a young age have difficulty in conversing and interacting with others especially in the Philippines where people who use alternative forms of communication such as sign language are a minority. Helping them hear provides an opportunity for them to live with without the difficulty of not being able to converse properly with others. As such, proceeds of the event will be donated to the Hearing Aid fund of the Ear Unit of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Philippine General Hospital, for their indigent hearing-impaired patients.
Reverb: Echoing Awareness through the Arts is co-presented by the UP Diliman Special Education Council, Ateneo Special Education Society, Leonard Cheshire Disability Philippines Foundation Inc., and Jack n’ Jill’s Chippy and X.O.. Tickets for the event are priced at PHP 250. Registration starts at 6:00 pm. For more information about the event, you can visit http://www.facebook.com/projectMUbility.
