Wazzup Pilipinas!
I have that special interest on works of art since I'm a frustrated artist myself. I wanted to take a course on Fine Arts or anything related to the arts but my mother disagreed saying there's not much money in the arts. Thus I ended up taking an engineering course, working as an IT professional for most of my life, and now writing for a living (if you consider blogging as writing).
I'm back to where I wanted to be. Writing and dabbling with artistic inclinations through my venture into blogging and social media. You have the eye of an artist when you have the capability to choose the right combination of colors, shapes, balance and other factors related to art.
Sadly enough, most artists are recognized when they are at the prime of their lives or after their death. During my youth, I think the only popular artists where the ones already in their grave. Their work only get attention, and value, because they couldn't create anymore new masterpieces. What remains are their last pieces of art.
It was therefore inspiring to have heard of Galleria Duemila proudly presenting a book launch highlighting Nelfa Querubin’s works. A Passion for Clay book launch held at the Ayala Museum last March 2, 2015 was sort of a tribute to the artist.
The book is co-authored by Patrick Flores and Imelda Cajipe Endaya. A Passion for Clay positions the artist’s contribution to the history and progress of Philippine contemporary ceramic art. Centering on materials and techniques while chronicling her personal evolution as woman artist and her encompassing career as printmaker, painter, and longstanding body of work as potter. The book launch coincides with an exhibition of fifteen ceramic pieces.
I've chatted with the two authors, Patrick Flores and Imelda Cajipe Endaya, and they speak highly of Nelfa Querubin. They say her work really warrants recognition thus she deserves to have a book dedicated in cataloging her work and telling the story of her life and accomplishments. This will also be an inspiration for others who would like to become an artist too. I'll try to upload the video interview with them when everything else I'm doing are settled.
The "A Passion for Clay" book launch was attended by friends, family and fans of Nelfa Querubin. I've met her beautiful nieces nieces Gail and Renee, and younger brother, Greg. I've requested a congratulatory video from them so it will be uploaded too immediately after I've written this article.
I also saw Chef Claude Tayag, and a lady who is probably his wife. I saw him earlier during the Madrid Fusion Manila held at the nearby Fairmont hotel. Chef Claude Tayag is one of the leading chefs in the Philippines with his own restaurant in Pampanga that has become so popular especially when Anthony Bourdain visited him as part of a special feature about the cuilinary dishes of the Philippines. There was also the owner of Galeria Duemilla herself, Silvana Ancelloti-Diaz.
Of course, all the people responsible for the book were there to share some photo ops with Nelfa Querubin whom they say has mentioned she may stop creating more of those amazing sculptures with diverse colors and shapes. I believe each work has their own representations and meaning, and that special moment when it was created.
It takes a lot of creativity and imagination to come up with artistic pieces and sculpting is an art that is harder than sketches or paintings. It's easier to correct our mistakes when done on paper or canvass, but sculpting with our bare hands take a lot of patience and a good eye of understanding what beauty really is.
Nelfa Querubin's works are true masterpieces that I would love to have everyone of them in my home as a centerpiece.
With only an initial 300 copies, the book will surely be a best-seller and may ran out of stock quickly. Don't wait for the reprinting. Be among teh very few to own one of these books that you and your family will enjoy reading.
