Manhid: The Pinoy Superhero Musical
Wazzup Pilipinas!
Musical theatre lovers will love this newest show by Ballet Philippines about Pinoy Superhereos. Inspired from comic book super heroes of the 60 - 90’s, they introduced new faces of superhereos that is reinvented for today’s era. Setting is present day in the Philippines where revolution failed.
The super powers are mostly old school as well as some of their costumes. Most of the characters were from the epic stories told by our grandparents. MANHID has already achieved cult status because the Eraserheads – the band who helped compose the music and performed it in the original production in 1992 performed at the University of the Philippines – have gone on to become one of the country’s leading pop groups. They released “Kailan”, one of the songs from MANHID, which became a top selling hit.
MANHID is a musical take on comic books. It is divided into three “books” that are patterned on classics of the comic book genre; 1. the origin issue 2. the “dark/crisis” issue and 3. the all-out / good versus evil battle episode of the “annual”.
The play is about the battles of two groups of super–heroes: the Maragtas headed by tabloid writer Bantugan Buenaventura and the lady activist Lam-ang Panganiban versus the Tulisan ng Bayan headed by General Apolaki Regalado.
“MANHID: The Pinoy Superhero Musical” will have a three-weekend run at the CCP Main Theater on February 20-22, February 27-March 1, and March 6-8, 2015.

I like the article. Personally, I'm a huge fan of stage plays especially if it is musical. I admire those people who have this great passion for theater. I hope for the success of this play. One thing that is unusual for me is the title, "Manhid." I don't see the connection between the title and the theme, which is superhero. But maybe it's symbolizes something or it's a name. Well I think it's better to watch it to find out the answer.

ReplyDeleteIt's nice to know that more and more plays and musicals are having Filipino themes! Though I can't find the connection between the title "Manhid" and superheroes, the musical looks good and promising! Also, it is interesting to know that the characters were from the epic stories told by our grandparents because I'd love to see them in real life!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure this play would be a hit. Not only because it's about superheroes (which kids like), but also because people will learn something about our country (like the epics told by our grandparents). Though I still don't get the connection between Manhid and superheroes, I'm sure we'll find out why when we watch the play, which makes it more exciting.
ReplyDeleteHmm. This musical looks really promising, not to mention VERY interesting. To be honest, the thing I'm most curious about is the relation of the title "MANHID" to the concept of superheroes. I guess the only way to find out is to watch the musical, no? :)
ReplyDeleteThis is a great way to showcase the talents of Filipinos who are striving to be known in this field. it was really a great idea to reinvent it to suit the taste of this generation as well. More success to them!
