Pope Francis and several Filipino celebrities are featured in the painting 'Salubong' by Dante Hipolito.
Inspiration begets inspiration. This motivated visual artist Dante Hipolito to paint Gov. Vilma Santos with Pope Francis in the 29” x 24” oil on canvas titled 'Salubong.' A distinct style of vibrant rural realism, it follows Pope Francis’ didactic intentions.
Dante did this by redefining art, what he terms as Composite Realism, which is the smooth interplay of filmmaking elements of production design, photography and digital art based on his experience in stage production and advertising. Thus, he creates a distinctively exuberant depictions of country life on their basic principles.
In an ambiance of rural peace and prosperity, Dante shows Gov. Vilma as a farmer leading stars (from left) Gary Valenciano, Sen. Grace Poe, Marian Rivera, Dingdong Dantes, Coco Martin and Kris Aquino who are also costumed as country people in the festive welcome.
Too funny but that's not far from the classics ... Rafael, da Vinci, etc., would have faces of their contemporary peeps and "celebs" of antiquity ... human all too human! I thought this was made as a joke though since born-again Gary Valenciano was included in the painting. Well, it probably shows that different religions can co-exist peacefully.
Seriously,...Pope Francis would not surround himself with movie stars and politicians. And the fact that these "people" (aka elite) are depicted as common laborers/farmers is laughable (but may be a bit acceptable since they do "act" or play the part of many roles for a living. Reminds me of the Vatican telling a Filipino politician that the Pope specifically wants to see the victims of typhoon Haiyan because they had planned otherwise.
I feel like this is typical of the bulk of people who grace the upper society who blatantly choose to close their eyes and not see their fellow countrymen in the opposite side of the spectrum.
This is somewhat the North Korean Influence. All lies and twisted representations. This is a perfect example of being out of touch with reality. But it's not really about the character itself. The object of art is not to reproduce reality, but to create a reality of the same intensity.
The vanity of this painting is exactly what Pontifex is against. Why not depict the Pope as he truly is; a very humble man who would rather be with the poor, sick, hungry, and homeless. Just like St Francis. Hence, the reason he chose that name!
